Rapt to hear this. People still overrate the importance of 5 mins of ruck work per quarter, it’s not that important. Rather another ground level player than a plodder.
Depends on who you're up against. When it's another team with one ruck and a KPP/utility chopping out, sure. Up against Melbourne and that means Owens is going to ruck against Gawn or Grundy for 20 minutes? Huge disadvantage.

You just setup knowing you’re going to lose the tap. If it was such a huge disadvantage Richmond never could have won three flags.

Might be the closest they could hope for.

Owens needing to spend any time in the ruck shows how dire our key forward/ruck stocks are at the moment.
Owens into the ruck is the stuff of nightmares. The kid has barely found himself as a player yet. That said there just aren't many options and you can understand that they'll be trying something like this until they get some big blokes back.

I'm happy that Marshall is taking the number one spot but you have to wonder why we didn't sign a replacement for Ryder, another depth tall.

It's baffling we didn't sign someone. The situation we are now in up forward was completely foreseeable. We saw it in the last 6 weeks, and that was with King in the side.

I understand our reluctance to part with draft picks but surely there was someone out there we could have gone harder at to prevent 2nd year midfielders having to pinch hit in the ruck.

We have a young ruck forward ( zero experience ).
We have a young ruck ( 1.5 years ).
We have a backup ruck, capable at AFL level.
We have our main ruckman.
We have Jack Hayes, a bit too short, but all the skills, ruck/fwd.

That's more than 10% of our list.

So should we have 6 Ruckmen, 6 key defenders, 6 key forwards and only 24 others to make up the other 18 positions we need each week?

Surely the answer is to play Heath. Ready or not.

Jack Hayes, a rookie pick from last year , is listed as injured for 8 to 10 weeks, and the season starts in 10 weeks.
SHOCK HORROR Clearly we should have traded our first round pick for Rhys Stanley to cover this eventuality.

Our season is doomed if we don't have a clear relief ruckman for the 10-15 minutes that big Ro will rest during round 1.

Stoked for this bloke, didn’t ever get a crack at Carlton on ball where he thrived. Seems the Blues looked at his recruitment profile and were adamant on him becoming a Luke Hodge type instead.

Think he goes well for you, have seen enough to think he belongs at the level so to get him for free after letting him run around with your senior list at training for a couple months is a massive tick.

I doubt he takes any centre bounces stuff. Will just be around the ground were the rucks are already entangled. He just needs to make a contest

But the issue is he's not even an established AFL player yet. Hopefully he becomes one but it's a lot of responsibility for a kid that has done very little. The issue is we don't have any other tall mids that look like they could do the role. Michito is a big kid but the thought of a big ruck crashing into him is awful.

Huge first month of the year for Marshall. Hope he is up to it and, just as importantly, lives to tell the tale.

Say what?
He rucked the whole 2019 season alone.
You make it sound like he's a novice.

Our rucks are fine and not far off what most sides carry. Heath developing, Campbell is mature depth in case of emergency, Roma is the main man. Guys like Battle, Sharman, Hayes have all fill-in rucked around the ground at stoppages etc.

We also brought in Keeler who should develop into a key position forward/ruck. If Owens rucks it will be as a stoppage ruck in the forward half. In case of an absolute emergency we play Howard or even Cordy as a ruck and push someone back for them.
