Training 2023 Pre Season

Training Report, Friday 20th January, 2023

Popped down to training this morning for the first time this pre-season. As others have previously stated, training looks a lot more organised than anything i had seen over the last 5-6 years. The names of drills were displayed on the electric scoreboard with a timer counting down (very organised & professional). The assistant coaches all run the drills with RTB looking on from the distance, only getting involved if he wants to provide direct one-on-one/one-on-two feedback to someone after a drill has been completed.

General observations:

Mason Wood was running laps while the others were doing drills, and didn't participate in any drills or match sim.

Billings was also absent, and I saw him walking back from the Danny Frawley Centre with what must have been a physio.

Coffield, Battle & Jones back with main group and completed all the drills and then sat out the match sim. Looks like they are being managed.

A lot of love between Nas & Hill. I'm still worried that Nas will head back to SA at the end of the year though.

Max Health is big unit (height wise) but physically he is no where near ready to play AFL. I'd say he's at least another two years away from being ready. Couldn't get near it against Marshall in the ruck contests, and keeping in mind Marshall isn't the most physical ruckman out there.

Peris is a good runner, but his foot skills just aren't up to it (yet).

The boys all look like they've all trimmed down. It's obvious that this is deliberate given RTB's comments about becoming a running side.
I also got the impression that the focus is on method rather than skill acquisition at the moment, as some of the skills were pretty average if I'm being honest. Having said that, Hill's skills are exquisite, and he is just a running machine.

Came home to see that Stocker had been signed. A bit surprised as I'm not sure where he will play and whether we need his type. It seemed from the drills that he has been earmarked as a defender as he didn't participate in any of the midfield drills. He didn't do anything bad, it's that he didn't do anything particularly good either.

Mitch Owens is beast. Has really filled out and is a really physically imposing. Played mainly as a forward and threw himself at packs. Got his hands to quite a few but has a tendency to drop marks. Maybe his role id to split packs open, bring the ball to ground and then let Gresh, Higgins & Butler get to work?

Windy is one absolute specimen of a human. Will be a future captain, and already has great leadership attributes, even for a second year player.

The other interesting thing I noticed was that during match sim, RTB would often stop play, and ask that the ball be thrown in from the boundary. Seemed like they are practicing moving the ball from stoppages.

There was another kid training (wearing jumper number 41). Not sure who it was. Built similar to Hunter Clarke but maybe a fraction taller.

The ruck situation is a worry. Realistically, we only have Marshall as a genuine ruckman at the moment. As mentioned earlier, Heath is just not ready yet. I think we should use our second lists spot t find a back up ruckman. Paddy Ryder is not the craziest of ideas (just get him in to play 8-10 games) or even someone like a Ben McEvoy (as back up for 8-10 games if needed).

Yes, we're fine for first rucks, but really few options for a second ruck - that being a guy who can attend 20-30% of centre bounces (not just the around the ground stuff) and actually do non-ruck stuff, usually as as forward, for the other 70%. Hayes is about the only one. I query whether King, Membrey and Sharman can do centre bounce stuff. Yes, Battle could possibly do it but that would require moving him forward (which I think we should do, incidentally).

I'm happy that we took on a young player , rather than another washed up hack.
Fremantle paid 2 firsts and a second round pick for Jackson.
Our list isn't good enough to throw away those sorts of draft picks.
Yes its a risk, but i think its the best option right now.

( I could never understand why no-one thought Peter Wright was a good first draft pick choice back in 2014 , The whole argument was always Mid ( Petracca ) or Tall Forward ( Paddy ) ).

Great write up. Agree with all that. I’ve been a handful of times and feel like the kicking is getting worse. And perhaps even the flow was a bit back to last year, stop start, rather than any discernible improvement.

Agree on Owens and his hands, but I left feeling better about him today because if he drops it (or the kick favours his oppo), he just moves so well and is a beast. He beat off Wilkie at one point when ordinarily that would just be a ball up situation.

Marshall looking in great nick. It might only be Moose as his oppo, but he’s dominating around the ground.

It was great to see Battle play some match sim late. Looking fit AF.

I also left feeling better about Cordy. Some great punches. Just don’t watch the running drills is the key 😄.

Still love Peris’ pace despite kicking not being great. He was fairly involved again.

NAS, Windy, Owens - great draft.

Agree with you on Cordy. I've noticed a few on here criticize him on his running, but at the end of the day, the saints didn't bring him in to win marathons. He is not your dashing half backer, more a one on one stopper type defender. Probably a back up, but an important one. The season is long.

Agreed. Skills were crap today.
Stand outs for me were Marshall, Windy, Nas & Hill
Allison did a couple of nice things. Same with Sharman. Clark was tidy. Owens has concrete hands it seems but he's competitive as hell. Sincs and DMAC were good. Sincs training with the backs and not with the mids. Looks like Sincs on one BF and Nas on the other. Agree with you on Peris and he spent all his time forward. Heath was poor.

Seems the Dogs used Cordy in the ruck sometimes.
Looking at his stats it seems like when he's playing in defence he often has 100% TOG, so no issues with not playing games out i guess.

Yep, I was there too and agree with amost everything you've written and would add:

*Dont mind Stocker, looks fit, strong, organised. Training as a defender.
*Nas, Higgins, Butler looked standouts. Allison was ok
*Van Es needs a year or two
*Bytel covering the ground much better
*Training is run with military like precision. Even during the breaks, all the staff know exactly what is happening - to set up for next drill. Just light-years ahead of previous years. Is this how good teams train?
*Finally, yeah skills looked poor but the boys are getting trained hard. Really hard. They were cooked by the end

Can anyone confirm from a club source (club article, etc) if any of these guys have been elevated to the senior list?

18. Jack Hayes (CAT A)
32. Mason Wood (CAT A)
41. Angus McLennan (CAT B)
42. Max Heath (CAT A)
43. Cooper Sharman (CAT A)
45. Jack Peris (CAT B)

We have 37 on the list now with Stocker's signing, but the article today says we've only got 1 spot remaining. My understanding is that the senior list can be a max of 40 players, not 38?

Pretty sure you are allowed a max of 38 on your senior list with a total of 42 or less across both senior and rookie lists. Plus 2x Cat. B's

Arent SSP signings automatically rookies? Which makes us 36 + 5 with 1 spare spot. Plus Peris & McLennan

Good point in Dmac. Today and last week he impressed me. His pace and stamina, plus his step, means he should suit the new style (if we have one 😅).

Not exactly sure how it works. If Stocker is on the rookie list then we have 2 spots left (36 senior listed players), not 1?
