Phillipou is the type of personality, that if you told him he would be immortalised by Saints fans if he won a flag for us, he we have even more incentive to be the best mid in the league.
I doubt he'd need to be told. Pretty sure he'll figure this out for himself.

I agree it will be him or Clark that are moved on at seasons end. Gresh and Clark initially struggled with the professionalism required to get their fitness to the required levels. On top they have both had some bad luck with injuries which has no doubt held them back. We will be in the fortunate position where having done well the past two drafts, we will have young players putting pressure on both. Both Gresh & Clark would be on decent coin and with next year claimed to be a very good draft crop, it makes sense for list balance that we attempt to garner a 1st round pick for one or both.

Gold Coast will have a possible 2 x top 20 academy players in 2023 so they will be looking to off load their 1st round picks, as will possibly other northern clubs.

I can't believe how many want to push Gresham out. He's one of our best players. If we are losing him it's because he's leaving for cash as a free agent. We would possibly be the most beige list in the league if we get rid of him.

He gets a lot of disrespect for a player of his level. A 25 year old who has been injured for a couple of seasons he's at an age where he's ready to step up and become a star. He already sits in our statistical bests and has a real point of difference out of the midfield.

First in inside 50s
Equal first for centre clearance
Second in score involvements
Fifth in tackles inside 50
Sixth in SC and DT scores
Third in contested possession and an average of one CP behind Steele
Fifth in effective disposals sandwiched between Hill and Wilkie
Eleventh for marks inside 50
Third in clearances
Fifth in stoppage clearance
Seventh in goals

Clark is a bit different in that he's not really locked in a spot yet but I'm hoping he can step up not step out.

I don't think people want him gone nor are they being disrespectful, for myself it's just a reality that players come and go, some are more valuable than others all have strengths and weaknesses.

As fans we all spend a lot of time looking at creating a premiership list without having the inside knowledge of a list manager or head coach or manager of football.

Gresh will be a free agent next year, Clark is out of contract, I think it's just natural to contemplate their position in the team and on the list, what their contracts are worth etc.

I can't remember who said: the most egregious sin (error?) a club can make is to misread their list.

At the moment for what we have achieved in the last 2 to 10 years, with a new coach and all the changes off field the only players I'm happy saying are untouchable are King and Steele. The list might be ok, it might be ordinary, if our ladder position is our best indicator then our list is ordinary at best.

I literally have no idea what out best 22 is and now King is injured it's only Steele, Sinclair, Wilkie and Crouch that are walk up starts, everyone else has a "?" beside them. Gresh is a problem, I can see the positives I can also see the negatives.

Good players are hard to come by and expensive to replace. If you sell off a top 5 player you want to make sure you can replace them for equal or less. Plenty seem to think that every kid will be a star and that every decent player is excess every year. So far we are still waiting to find a handful of guns let alone excess.

I actually think guys like Seb Ross might struggle the most. He's coming off a fantastic year but he has struggled to commit to contests 100% of the time in the past. I think that there are elements of his game that Ross will love but he probably wants to make sure he's 100% in to every contest. No more standing off the pack and waiting for someone else to go get it. Playing as a more outside midfielder, the youth combining through are probably looking at that spot as well.

I've definitely been on Seb's case over the years, but you need guys on the outside waiting for he handball. Seb's main issue over the journey has been his disposal/decision making, I think he'll take his contest up a notch if Ross asks him to

I appreciate your point,
Gresh was equal 7th in 2022
Not in the top 10 2021 and 2020
6th in 2019
Of course Seb

Here's a problem, while I agree with the general sentiment, is Gresh a top 5 player?
In the Trevor Barker Award
Gresh was equal 7th last year.
Didn't make the top 10 2020&2021
6th in 2019
Seb has won 2 and 5th last year.

We can all find a reason to keep or let go of a player, what we don't know is about attitudes and relationships within the club and the playing group these things and contracts will all affect how he is seen by the club.

If the past is any guide to the future and it may not be, Gresh and Hunter may well be told to find out what they are worth on the open market, they are out of contract at the end of the year and they have trade currency. Where they play in the future is also in their own hands, they may well take that option.

Remembering Bassat saying we are prepared to take a step back to be competetive in our pursuit of a flag. I'm prepared for poor results and losing players whomever they are.

Gresham is a star but he just never plays anymore. I’d be seeing how this year goes first but if it’s another injury riddled one then I wouldn’t be fussed whether he stays or goes. Doesn’t matter how good you are if you end every year with a season ending injury which is what he’s done the past three years.

Ease up gringo, No one's saying we don't like Gresham. I can't speak for anyone else but my reason is simple.

1 - Many players feel the best way to get past their injuries is to write a new chapter and move to a new club.

2 - biggest reason: I'm not sure how he will do in a Lyon-led environment and has not in the past struck me as a player willing to roll up the sleeves more than minimum requirement level.

3 - he's one of the few players we have whose external value approaches his internal value

I'd love to know how list management and fitness dept see him.

Questions.

Are we paying him midfield wages or small forward wages, is there a difference?

Is it possible to get his body to the level of being a fulltime mid? After 8 years do we keep the faith or do we settle him as a small forward?

If we do settle him forward, where does that leave Butler as Snags looks like he's first in line?

What does our forward line structure look like?
2 smalls Snags and Gresh,
2 medium Phillipou and Michito
2 talls could be anyone really

Point is it's not simple.

First i've heard of him struggling.

He did in fact play 18 games this year.
Some may have been hampered by injury , but when i went to school, 18 out of 22 is a lot more than never.

If you think he's injury hampered , so will others ....unless we can deal with Trout at Essendon but i'm certain it would be Dodo.

Gresh injured regularly, Ross rarely injured. Not a great comparison.

I think his recovery from injury in 2021 addressed your 2nd point there. He became far more professional, which i think was reflected in his season prior to another injury. He was bloody good last year.

Two major injuries in 2020, only lasted two rounds in 2021 then another serious injury this year. We can’t be in denial and just say “he’s not injury prone he just keeps getting injured”. It’s now a pattern.

I’m not saying I’d look to trade him but if he goes as a free agent after another injury riddled year then so be it.
