I think you're underplaying how good Gresh actually was in the middle. His kicking under pressure isnt the best, we all know that, but his clearance work is excellent and importantly plays with agility and pace that our other midfielders dont have which can really break open other teams who lack the ability to deal with it.

I think hes playing his best position right now and will only improve.
I can't see Gresham ever being more than just a good solid mid. He brings something different to the midfield but the only way I see him becoming an elite player of the competition is by also spending a decent amount of game time forward. That is where he is a genuine match winner.

The magic man is not a 2-way operator. I love his attributes and he has X factor oozing out his hole, but his defensive work is perfunctory at best. Hopefully old mate Rossco can change that mentality because he could be our best player

Also, the coaches love getting out to Toast It in Moorabbin. Have seen Ross, Harves and Pretzel Boy there a few times. The lamb toastie is 👌🏼 succulent and tasty like a Hunter Clark candy sell

I’ve always thought Gresham was too much of a liability defensively to be a forward but I can’t see Ross putting up with guys who don’t want to tackle.

I think he's pretty much DeGoey, he's high impact per possession. I think just putting a full season together in a finals side would put him right up the top of the better mids. Having him spend some time resting forward would be ideal but he is most likely playing more midfield than forward. The only way he plays full time forward is if we have a heap of kids that leap frog him and we are having to play him there to get him a spot.

The midfield mix will be an interesting watch regardless. If Sincs is playing mids, Hill wing and Windhager has a tagging role wrapped up. It will be interesting to see who else runs through there. Got to fit Steele, Crouch and Ross back in. If Byrnes and Bytel have both improved it's getting tight for spots.

Milney was hardly Mr Defence. If you can score heavily he seems to have a bit of leeway.

Good problem to have for a change.

I gather you have to have one attacking mid at centre bounces and Gresham is good when we have the ball. The query is how much pressure he applies when we dont, he is far from a strong pressure player.

At least in a forward pocket his lack of defensive acts are not exposed as much. I believe for team balance his best position is in a pocket with the occasional foray into the middle.

That said I cant see why all our small forwards cant be used sparingly through the middle to break things up. That was Richmonds & Hawthorn's strength during their premiership years, as they threw a number of players through the middle at certain times.
Tom Papley goes alright in the middle

He doesn't hit up targets like DeGoey

Keeler will play. Just not before The King.
We shall see my friend.

DeGoey is just a much better user than Gresham through the middle though

I thought it would be something Gresham would eventually grow out of but the way he deliberately throws the ball onto the boot to kick an ugly mongrel punt when he has time is as frustrating as anything I've seen as a fan.

I am not suggesting he should be a full time forward but a mix that spend him spend large chunks forward would be best for the team. A 50/50 split or there abouts. Similar to how Robbi Gray was played.

We need guys like Windy really stepping up so we can afford to do it though and Sinclair moving into the midfield would definitely help

From Glen McFarlane’s HS article today:

”St Kilda’s 2023 task became harder with news this week that Max King will miss the bulk of the season after being forced to undergo a shoulder reconstruction”

The bulk of the season?

Yeah I think we should be playing Gresham mostly up forward, with King out we need all the goal scoring potency up forward that we can get.

Regardless of that Gresham just doesn't seem to have the body that can hold up to playing as a permanent midfielder, he keeps on getting injured.

I reckon about 70-80% forward with a 20-30% midfield mix would suit him best and suit us best to get the best out of him.

Someone needs to explain to these rocket surgeons that a shoulder reco isn't a knee reco and takes less than half the time to recover from,

There's some muppets on the main board here too that are saying our 2023 season is done as King is out for most of the season, just wishful thinking.
