A player could spend his salary on building a rocket, taking a large portion of the squad to the moon where they play the first AFL game ever in a low gravity environment, it making world news and the Swans media team would only mention it perhaps in passing a few months after they have returned and half those players have already been infected with an alien virus that turns them into zombies.

IDK, there's a sponsorship opportunity.

"The Sydney Swans are proud to announce a new partnership with QBE for discounted space-induced Zombie virus cover."

"The Lizard of Oz: Metres gained, meteors lost" - the second installment of the Lost Lizard Saga
"Blakey and friends have managed to beat the dreaded mutant Army and destroyed the evil global pharmaceutical conglomerate.

However, before the Liz can rest, a distress beacon on the moon is activated from an unknown source. The Lizard of Oz and his trusty companions, Fantastic, Clamps and fresh faced newbie "The Kont" go to investigate this footballing hinterland.

Little do they know, this is a remenant of the Dastardly Dank scientific program. Will they survive this morale corruption on the moon or be delisted permenantly?!"

In my opinion he will play and be a sensation. Just my opinion.
The Swans side is very hard to crack into. He has to do that. And then feel like he belongs in there. Then he will.

Great for the club that the side is hard to break into.

If he doesnt get opportunities I wont be dissappointed as I'd love the Eagles to lure him back West to help with rebuilding our midfield.

Same with Dev Robertson at the Lions.

If we can land Angus and Dev to join Culley, Ginbey, Chesser and Hewett basically sets up the bigger bodied mids who can also play back or forward for the next 10 years.

It is possible due to potential opportunity but reckon he is the next inside mid that gets a crack.

Was in R1 last year before injury so definitely a shout for seniors this year

There was one Saturday morning. Like last week it was 3 quarters.

Blue and Red teams. Though players were swapped between teams during the match. Last quarter few senior players were rested and it was more mixed up.

There were quite a few academy/vfl players to add numbers. Guys like Amartey, McLean, Franklin and Reid only had a tiny amount of game time.

Goals

1st quarter

Franklin (red) - Franklin took a mark centrally just outside 50m, spun around and quickly had the shot and easily kicked the goal.
Hayward (red) - Red team was able to cause a turnover, ball eventually got to Hayward who quickly had a shot from 55m centrally.
Papley (red) - Mills made a low pass to Papley who converted the set shot centrally 40m out.
Mills (red) - Blue team defenders kept handballing backwards. Mills made a tackle, got a holding the ball decision and converted set shot 50m centrally.
Gulden (red) -Red team counterattacked quickly, it got to Gulden who had a shot on the run from 60m out and it bounced through the goals.

2nd quarter
Reid (red) - 20m out directly in front of goal Reid is 1 vs 1 with his defender. As he is falling, he soccers it through the goals.
Gulden (red) - Someone gives a short handball to Gulden and he quickly snaps a goal 40m directly in front.
Mills (red) - Rankins kicks the ball to Mills in the area. He converts the set shot 35m at an angle.
Unsure (blue) - There was a crowd of players, someone soccers a goal 20m directly in front.
Gulden (red) - Red wins the centre bounce and kicks it long. Gulden takes a contested mark and converts the set shot 30m at an angle.

3rd quarter
Logan (red) - A long kick into the forward line. Logan takes the mark and converts set shot 35m at an angle.
Corey Warner (blue) - Warner is in space 55m out near the boundary. He takes a speculative shot and kicks a goal.
Corey Warner (blue) - A few minutes later gets the ball again 50m out even closer to the boundary, has another speculative shot and kicks another goal.

I would love for Corey to have similar improvement in him as Chad has had.

Thanks so much for this!

I wonder if Unsure could be a round 1 bolter, sounds like he's got good goal sense and dangerous in traffic.

I would love for Corey to have similar improvement in him as Chad has had.

He was playing midfield for the first two quarters. He seemed to do ok but I did not notice him too much.

In the 3rd quarter he was playing half forward flank. And strangely was on fire for a few minutes. He had 2 speculative shots 50m out near the boundary that went in. (in front of the south eastern boundary where all the spectators were) And then shortly after went for a nice run.

These were roughly the teams near the start. But as mentioned, there was a bit of team swapping during the game. Also a few of the senior players for whatever reason only played a small amount of game time.

Blue
Lloyd Florent McCartin Gould Fox Cunningham Rampe
McAndrew Sheldrick Warner Warner Mcinerney Campbell Parker Mitchell
Hall-Kahan McLean Owens

Red
Rankin Edwards Vickery Francis McCartin
Ladhams Rowbottom Mills Roberts Stephens Gulden
Papley Hayward Heeney Logan Franklin Amartey Reid

I thought Hayward looked good with his athleticism and movement in the forward line. He looked dangerous taking a few marks and able to pressure defensively. Gulden kicked a few goals. But in general looked good with whatever he did. Like cleanly taking contested marks, making tackles or passes.

SeanM based on your above report and cumulative reporting over the pre-season, doesn't sound like anyone is really dominating this pre-season. At least not relative to reports from other team's intraclub games and match sim exercises, where it seems like players are blowing observers away and putting in some ridiculous performances. Not saying we're not having a really strong pre-season, just that no one's running around like peak Adam Goodes out there, unlike most other teams.

It's quietly reassuring to me. We have long been a team that doesn't shine in the months of January & February, as there's no need to. It's worked for us, as we tend to be better at turning it up once the real stuff begins, whilst other teams turn out to be pre-season specialists, namingnonamescarlton.

(Unless Sean you're a very measured and level-headed observer, and there are Adam Goodes 2.0's out there and you're just not getting carried away, in which case thank you and scratch all of the above :p)

I am not sure what dominating pre-season would look like. I suppose performance in a structured competitive match would be most relevant. So the 2 Saturday intra club matches and more importantly the upcoming preseason games against Brisbane and Carlton.

A young player yet to debut could have promising moments during preseason. But it is a step up to be able perform in a full sided competitive match against Brisbane and Carlton.

And I will always have an imperfect view of the match. I watch from the eastern boundary. And more likely to notice if a player does something good on that side of the ground. And in general it is hard to pay attention to everything going on, such as what players are doing off the ball and 1vs1 contests.

Last Saturday (11th Feb intra club)
I thought Parker was really good. He kicked 3 goals. But I could also see up close his intensity and competiveness at the contest. Also was able to see Campbell execute multiple attacking kicks on the run under pressure into the corridor. And buzz around midfield at pace getting involved. Gulden is consistently good. Precise disposal, clean hands and massive workrate. Florent/Fox provided a lot of run and ball use from defence. Papley/Hayward/Heeney were good as a attacking unit with their movement and ability to combine with each other.

- (quick clarification on the duration of the match.) I am unsure if it was 3 quarters with a break halfway in each quarter. Or it was regarded as 6 distinct periods.

Mate thanks again for the brilliant insight, I also had heard Parker was really turning it on. You mention the fwd line cohesion of paps wilber and Heeney. Was wondering if you could possible shine some light on how Logan worked in with them. Was he a target inside 50 at all?

I'm looking forward to your Suns match preview - you show much potential grasshopper.

I'm not usually one to put much stock into individual pre-seasons, but I love that we're hearing Parker's name being mentioned as a pre-season standout. I think it's genuinely the first time I can recall seeing him spoken about in the pre-season.

He's a proud individual, and I reckon he will have a point to prove as last year was the first year since 2016 that he didn't finish top 3 in the B&F. He strikes me as a "nothing but the best" kind of player.

It would also be great if the captain can lead from the front to show there's no scarring from the GF this year.

This week (Sat 18th Feb) red forward line was Papley, Heeney, Hayward, Logan and resting mids for most of the game. (Reid, Franklin and Amartey only played for a short amount of time.)

Last week (Sat 11th Feb) red forward line was usually Papley, Heeney, Hayward, Konstanty, Logan and McAndrew(full forward due to lack of available talls). Logan was the main tall target and kicked 3 goals from set shots, found a lot of space and took a few marks. I don't know whether that was because of loose marking, his movement, good delivery or the other forwards movement creating space for him. Just a general impression that he had a lot of space.

Here is how I listed the goals from last week
Goals Saturday 11th Feb
1st quarter

  • Logan (red)- Logan marks a clearing kick from blue's defence 30m out from goal and converts set shot.
  • Papley (red) - There is a pack of players around the ball 25m out from goal. Ball gets to Papley who is standing free on the outside and snaps from 25m central.
  • unsure (blue) - Morrision centres the ball then someone picks up the loose ball and quickly snaps from 25m in front
  • Parker (blue)- Blue mids win it from the centre bounce and immediately attack, it eventually gets to Parker who kicks a goal 50m out directly in front.
  • Red Logan(red) - Papley kicks it to Logan who is free. He converts the set shot 30m at an angle

2nd quarter
  • Parker(blue) - Parker picks up a loose ball in the forward pocket, breaks a tackle then snaps from 20m out at an angle.
  • Logan (red)- Mills with a short flat kick finds Logan who made a short lead. He takes the mark and converts from 30m in front.
  • Roberts (blue)- Roberts takes a mark in the forward pocket and converts the set shot
  • Parker (blue)- The ball is in front of goal in a pack of players. Someone handballs it back to Parker who is free 25m out directly in front. He quickly snaps a goal.

3rd quarter
  • Vfl player(blue) - Hall Kahan kicks it to a VFL player who marks and converts a set shot from 25m at an angle
  • Mills (red)- Mills picks up a loose ball 40m in front of goal and has a quick shot and kicks a goal.
  • Heeney (red) - Papley marks the ball 50m out on the counter attack. And kicks it to Heeney who is running into goal. Heeney marks it 10m out directly in front of goal. Then converts the set shot.
  • Heeney (red) - Hayward picks up a loose ball on the edge of the 50m and finds Heeney in space. Heeney converts the set shot 25m directly in front of goal.
  • Owen (red)- Rowbottom makes a low pass to Owens 35m directly in front of goal. He converts the set shot right at the end of the match.
