Training 2023 pre-season

On your last point. I've been ship wrecked on the same island ever since McDonald was drafted but it only works if Amartey can become more mobile.... and the jury has been deliberating for years now. He needs a good year and that injury is very problematic
He is a mobile forward being asked to play as a pack marker. His main work in the reserves is as a leading FF. McLean is the pack Mark monster

I thought it was interesting that Hayward mentioned Roberts as a standout performer over the pre-season. He's someone who hasn't been talked about much as so much focus has been on Sheldrick, so it'll be interesting to see if he can actually turn that into a meaningful impact during the season, or if it'll be another case of the pre-season hype curse.
Matty Roberts is, that bigger bodied mid thst often takes a bit longer. He was given lots of minutes in the reserves and proved to be a huge difference when in there.

I really feel for Clarke. He has a great opportunity to finally nail down a 22 spot and he gets injured.
I can see a situation where Clarke does not play a game in the 1s this year.
He will not crack the midfield unless we suffer injury. His ceiling has been reached. With Sheldrick/Roberts/Mitchell/Warner etc he has competition there.
The options for small forward have increased with Sheldrick(another preseason), Konstanty and Wicks he has competition there too.

A lot will depend upon who gets first chance at that small forward role and if they nail it then Clarke may be waiting a while for a game, especially now he has had an interrupted preseason.

My problem with Roberts, and why I have a question mark on him is he feels a bit like the Crouch brothers. Can certainly get the ball which is good, but doesn't seem to do much with it. His impact with the ball is much lower than the average player. I could be wrong but that is just my observation.

Clarke played a specialised role (successfully) negating the opposition most dangerous backman. Unless we don't utilise that role, everyone apart from Clarke has to prove themselves in that role. Of course he might not play a game but he's the frontrunner atm for a best 22 spot in that role. I'm backing us utilising that role again since it was successful for our gameplan & nearly all teams have a gun attacking backman. He might not be flashy but he got the job done.

He has to get picked first.
If he doesn't get picked, then that is not necessarily a bad thing. It means we have a stronger team than last year in that position.

We won't know that until players in that position surpass the level of Clarke. He's already proven himself, his position to lose.

Nope. Clarke is a limited player - low footy smarts, really poor kick. It is a luxury to play a one trick pony and one we can I’ll afford. Others can perform lock downs on half backs as well as execute other skills.

Wow! I've made a mess of trying to quote more than one post.

Anyway, about Clarke, I think the scenario where he doesn't play a game is possible but unlikely. Let's assume Konstanty comes in for round 1 and does well and holds his place. He is a first year rookie, one of the youngest in his draft year, there's no way he can sustain it for the whole season. So, Clarke will very likely get games unless he is injured or out of form.

I'm not sure I agree about Roberts. I'm not that familiar with how the Crouch Bros play, and I agree that Roberts is not especially damaging with the ball in hand, but: he has good footy smarts, tends to be pretty reliable and able to either find a target close by on the outside or give the ball a long roost. He's also capable of kicking goals. I think you're selling him a bit short but if he turns out as good as the Crouch brothers I think we have to be happy with that. (Haven't they been either AA or at least up there in their club's B&F?)

You need to have good footy smarts to perform a disciplined role like a lockdown role. He doesn't really need to utilise his kicking either. Who are the others that can perform lock down roles? Clarke has proven he can do it.

it just requires a tank and concentration. It is a low rent job that most players with half a brain and a tank can perform. Clarke is a liability with ball in hand

I agree with the foot skills, not Clarke's best asset by a long shot. I think he has a pretty good footy IQ though, he has shut down some quality players which requires smarts as well as discipline. Ideally i'd love to see Konstanty or Sheldrick take over that role and be able to shut down the opposition like Clarke does but at the same time provide the attacking threat that Clarke doesn't seem to possess.

He's injured. Kostanty puts, pressure on too and kicks goals as a small forward. Now Clarke is injured, if Kostanty stands up in the preseason games, he will get the job.

Don't think Clarke is really in the plans

1 year deal after a career best season
Think that's been clear since 2020, Horse just wanted to try something and it worked really well. Coaches around the league will plan around a HBF tag now so it's likely Clarke gets torched and loses his spot forever

Feel like Clarke is being written off for no reason. While some might prefer other alternatives - he solidified his spot in the 22 on a big run to a GF, kept getting picked. Oppo coaches knew what he was in the team for already.

Yeah he's injured but clearly the coaches valued his input, so unless the next player in dominates (a big if) and we only have 1 injury concern, then he'll probably come back in. If he returns via the VFL, I expect he'll do what he usually does, rack up possession and tackles in the midfield, which was his form when picked last year.

Can’t quite fathom the disdain for Clamps.

Prior to the GF, we hadn’t lost a game all season in which R.Clarke played.

Anyway, if he’s injured or not in the tactical plans for R1, I still see Gus as the man.
Not disdain.
It’s more like meh …
