My post is made in the context of my emotions post tonight's PM. Pragmatically, we had a fantastic year!....but after our first qtr in the PM we went missing. No one stood up and Lions were full of run and pressure. A disappointing last 90 minutes to our season. Crippa was below par (as he was in the H&A game against Lions), Coleman Charlie seemed to disappear in the finals, Harry was back and trying, and the extra "finals" pressure by Lions post 1st qtr unsettled our game plan. For most of qtrs 2 & 3 we looked lost, final qtr a mini revival. To kick 5 goals in the first qtr but finish with 9 at the end of the game while Lions piled on 10 majors in the second half and seemed to be controlling the game was frustrating!!
Yeah, I watched it too. We will get over it

At the start of the year we hoped we’d make finals and perhaps win one.
It looked ugly mid season.
Then we found some cohesion but also some fight, fight to the end.
We made finals, we won 2, absolute bonus, we fought out the third, we weren’t good enough today.
We have a much better spread of effort, it’s not left to a top few any more.
Hollands and Motlop are great finds! Acres an inspired recruit!
Boyd more than justified his selection tonight.
Big Pre-seasons for Williams, Kemp, Motlop, JSOS and Cuningham.
Just like we used the last round loss in 2022 against Collingwood as motivation for 2023, let’s use the preliminary final loss in 2023 as motivation for 2024.

Fitness/Health considerations aside, Ollie really cemented his best/starting 22 spot in our side with that absolutely plucky and fearless performance

We need to get 50-100 games into this boy as soon as we can. He just an ferocious appetite for the footy and work rate that cannot be ignored.

Would have loved a Carlton vs Collingwood GF but it wasn't meant to be

So So Proud of this Team

Growth in the players was invaluable over the year and they should be proud and hungry as 2024 should be even better. Time for a well deserved break before it starts again.

Growth in Voss was instrumental too, there are some things he does that I still wonder about but hopefully a tactician type mentor can be found over the off season.

Only "concern" i really have of him as coach now, is that sometimes I think he gets caught up on the name of a player or how much he prefers them playing when he selects the team. Rather than putting forward the team with the best compatibility to win a game.

I think that was a minor contribution to tonight's loss. This team is almost a mirror image of our team we had when we were in the losing streak. Those who contributed were pushed out when the players he wants in his team were available again.

Anyway thoughts for another time. He deserves big 👏 and respect because he copped it this year and he got our boys to the preliminary final

Couldn't have happened to a better club.
Get back on your old salary cap strategy to see if that can take you to the next level in 2024
getting red-carded will save you from more of this pre-school stuff during the week and beyond...........

Boyd might have been been an inspired selection, but he looked best 22 material before suspension and showed it again tonight. One of their best.

Hollands is on the right trajectory.

Massive tick for the season. But the goal now is to be there again next year, and the year after that etc.

Fill in the gaps, work on the turnover game and go again.

Yeh I’m disappointed but in the end possibly just to war worn ..
So pleased & proud of our efforts this year a prelim is a huge effort from where we came from
A prelim at the Gabba and not disgraced
Love our boys thanks for the fabulous ride 💙

Hollands is going to be such a great footballer. Worked his arse off tonight. Can’t wait to see Binns. Lots of positions to fight for next season. Well done lads. We aren’t the better team for all our finals so it was bound to turn against us. Even though we had our chance to bridge the gap further we couldn’t sustain the pressure and their defence held up to all our forays forward. Andrew’s killed both our forwards.

2024 training needs to be all about run and forwards leading into space. Sitting on their heads won’t work anymore.

The feeling of pride is equalled by the hollow disappointment.
Yeah, we made a preliminary but we also p1ssed up a golden opportunity, and the club should push even harder next year.
Boyd was fantastic. Never a bad mention again from me.
Many others were passengers. Mere stargazers.
Imho, we really missed Kemp's marking and Owies forward line speed. The fact that Martin finished with 2 was very flattering.

We really need some run.
How good would it have been to have. I dunno, maybe Jordan or even Harmes?
I don't wanna see a fairy fluff outside seagull at the club but I do want us to recruit a hard outside runner that can also make a hit.
A big preseason for Binns, maybe?

Positives;
Boyd - a great game after a few weeks out.
Walsh - Genuine superstar.
Cripps - Outstanding game. 2 captain's goals.
Harry - Kept presenting all day
Marchbank - Genuine AFL finals interceptor

Negatives;
Now's not the time.
Proud but very disappointed.

Signs were there for weeks.

Since round 20, we'd only kicked above 74 points once. We are just so, so reliant on a) clearance dominance and b) two players (Charlie and Harry) to kick a winning score most weeks. We needed goals from Mots, Fog and just didn't get them; we needed TDK to bring the ball to ground inside forward 50 as he did when H was out for a month, and it just didn't happen.

There's a lot to be proud of, and there's a certain amount of happiness that we should partake in due to the run of wins at the tail of the season. But make no mistake: when you kick 5 goals to one in the first term in an away prelim then come out to kick just 1 of the next 11 goals, something has gone amiss. They're good, but they're not as good as that comeback entails.

Fog is one of my favourites and I love what he brings to our forward mix, but he'd want to be kicking a goal a game next year; a forward that kicks no goals is not a forward. Owies would want to find a touch more speed if he wants his role over Motts, and Motts needs to make the pressure he brought early his byword for the rest of his career. We need to figure out a way to use Jack Silvagni as the defensive ruckman, because Pitto doesn't give us anything forward of the ball; if TDK isn't providing goals, we need someone who does as the alternate.

Ultimately, this year needs to be remembered as the end of the last epoch of Carlton. We are no long a rebuilding club; there's list recontextualisation that will occur, but we are not a developing side any longer. We confirmed it by winning not one but two finals; if we earned the home prelim, it would - arguably - be us going through to the grand final. We have arguably outperformed Judd's Carlton in our first real go at it.

This is the year, the moment, the coach where it all ended. We awaken tomorrow to expectation and a new dawn.

Carn the Blues!
