After long and careful consideration, I've made my mind up.

Cunners out for Martin(easy call)
A very out of touch Kennedy makes way for Harry.
Marchy's decisons are too unreliable, TDK & Pitto can drop back and help look after Dagwood.
Doc returns to defence on one of their dangerous smalls.
Ollie in the 22 and Dow sub.(I'd prefer to go the other way around, but it'll never happen)

Can we beat the Lions in a contested grind? I'm not sure it's the best method up there. Hitting the scoreboard heavily with better transition to Harry, Charlie and Martin would work better imo. Moot point anyway as the MC will lean towards the contested footy model.

I think we 100% should be trying to make it a heavily contested game which is our strength.

IMO we will be in big trouble trying to beat them in an opening flowing game which is their preferred style.

When we were smashing teams at the beginning of our winning streak we were gang tackling and closing space on opposition(We basically had 22 players who were applying pressure) You are right, tackling was not good on a couple of attempts against Dees.

When we don't win the clearances, with a taller slower team, we can be vulnerable at closing time and space like we were in the first 2 finals. We are also missing a fast smaller defender who can assist Saad with overlap run. Too often, we have gone back to our old habit of booting too long into the forward line.

Melbourne went in with a smaller & faster team and it should have paid dividends if it was not for their kicking at goal.

I hope by the 3rd week of the finals we learn this. Lions will be predictable, I hope we are not.

In: McKay, Martin, Boyd Sub: Hollands as cover for Acres & Doc

Out: Pitto, Fogarty, Marchbank (All 3 deserve their place and anyone can argue why they should be in & I won't disagree. We lose something with any of these not in the team but gain more balance with the changes)

  • Cuningham stays & you get him to focus on doing Fogarty's role of tackling & applying pressure. Then, his ability to finish, weight the ball, take a mark, closing speed, move into the midfield, can happen as a consequence. Class can turn things in moments in big games.
  • Kennedy is a brut. He just demands the space at the contest. Can finish & make players around him feel stronger. You need tough men in big finals. Hewett takes Neale & Kennedy supports Cripps. With Kennedy we try and brutilize Lions at the coal face.
  • McKay & Cripps will need to chop out in the ruck. We don't need to protect anyone at this time of the year. There is no tomorrow for this season.
Fogarty deserves his spot, Cunningham has done very little for a month, talent wise the latter has more but right now Fogarty is playing his role better by a fair way.

Timing is everything -S durdin breaking down when he did makes you wonder what our back six be like if he come in as the lock down earlier would marchbank be playing ?- he would be great for daniher Saturday night

I’m an interstate member. Live in Bris, travel to Melbs 3/4 times a year for games (6 this year). Will be devo if i miss out on tickets due to all the non members scrambling for other members who can’t travel codes. Just saying.
Totally agree.

The same applies to those of us that want to travel up. Why should locals up there who aren't members just jump on board ahead of us?

The club put up Lachie Fogarty for the Sunday Footy show this morning. Pretty confident that they are not putting players into the media to then tell them they're not playing on the weekend. Pencil him in.

Port fans angry Ken didn't show up there lol

Best of luck to The Old Dark Navy's Chief and all the other Qld based Blue Baggers here. Fingers crossed you all get tickets my friends.

It's extraordinary to think we are in a Prelim Final folks. Win or lose, the boys and our coaching staff and everyone else associated at the footy club have really done us proud.

This is a season I will never forget, no matter what happens on Saturday Afternoon

I am still pinching myself and enjoy every second, every moment until the Prelim starts.

Not going to stress or worry about any potential team selections or match ups until at least Wednesday. Just want to bask in our incredible run after 20 odd painful years and our sky is falling in 6 game losing streak earlier this year

Yep. People are forgetting few things when they say we're cooked:

  • Walsh, Cerra and Gov had had weeks out before the finals.
  • Harry and Martin are going to be fresher after a week off.
  • Cripps is slowly getting better and better, he's missed two weeks prior to finals.
  • Hollands was the sub.
We looked pretty cooked in the second half on Friday.

8 days off is nice.

The only things I'm worried about in this game are Charlie Cameron and the Gabba.

We can impact one. Let's do it.
'Country roads' by 3 times max please.
Hopefully 1-2.
Other end it should be 'Charlie's me darling' by 10. And 'I'm just wild about Harry' by 5.

Best of luck to @The Old Dark Navy's @Chief and all the other Qld based Blue Baggers here. Fingers crossed you all get tickets my friends.
I have a no-access Interstate membership so I get nada on the priority. Lions members get one ticket each so no help from my usual supply.

I'll be in nosebleed or letterbox view in ground level GA :D

I think the only way we beat them is by making it a grind.
Monster them in the stoppages and lock it in the forward half.

I'm not talking a free flowing game, rather improving our transition at selection. We were moving the ball better 4 weeks ago, before dropping our more offensive runners. Depends if you feel we are more dangerous with fast entries to Charlie or what we've had in the last few matches with him getting monstered.

We'll win this, at the moment our brand of footy is better than the Lions and as Browny mentioned we have the king of the Gabba as coach, we should never have won on Friday night but we did, this is for real now and we are up to our necks in the fight for this years flag.

Our game style has evolved since we turned the corner. Gone from dominating games in all aspects and playing on through the corridor to playing more conservatively through the finals. I get it. The physical toll would be huge playing like that, particularly because every game has been an elimination final for 12 weeks. We are hugging the boundary line more and I think that is one of the reasons why Melbourne were in disarray with the Acres' goal. They didn't expect the switch.

Interestingly, our on ballers Time On Ground was quite low, again. Walsh highest with 81%. Can't help but think that Voss is truly gambling and trying to keep an eye on winning the premiership with playing conservatively to conserve energy in the hope we can keep winning.

The fact that we won against a top side by being beaten in most stats and to take our chances, shows we have evolved and we are playing adaptively.

Cunners just run out of puff and the easy out, replaced by Martin.
Kennedy out for H.

Then really its a tough call as to if they go with Hollands, Bam Bam or even JSOS for the sub role. I like the idea of Jack as long as he put in a big week on the track and is fit. Along with Dow, they have all shown an ability to immediately impact a match in the last quarter as sub.

wouldn’t at all be surprised if we have a few players that don’t get up for the game, lots of them looked sore at times. Dochs shoulder prob biggest concern, no doubt would have been jabbed after it dislocated that would have allowed him to get through the game, but how he wakes up today and what. Other damage has been done will be telling.. same with Acres, he was clearly struggling at different stages.

My view is that Melbourne were really lucky to come up against Carlton without Harry and Martin in the forward line - their absences made it much harder work than it could have been. As for Sydney - our whole field structures were upside downed when Harry came off...Sydney were lucky with that injury because Carlton could easily have won that by 10 goals.

The whole team dynamics change with big Harry in combined with Martin's smarts.

I find it difficult to criticize a coach and a team that has won 11 out of its last 12 games - with a week in week-week-out patchwork of gaffer-taped players to choose from.

So yeah it boils down to who misses with Harry and Martin automatic ins - if fit. Couldnt care less who teh coaches pick to play - they will make the decision(s) and from there it is up to teh team to guts it out.

We will go in massive underdogs again for all the reasons people will quote up in 'fortress gabba'

Good.

As you put two nice ins
I guess maybe Kennedy out, cunno been quiet altho good still,Hollands nice sub or Kennedy might be wiser
Doc won't tackle much....but needed

Gabba nasty,no one does well☢

Cannot let Lion pounce early too tough at home..can we match their midfield this time?
Our rebound good, forwards can possibly outscore theirs

Have to outplay them including spells of holding them for 4 quarters...lions almost had their finals window will be intense possibly nervous knowing what awaits

Can this Blues group now properly regroup at Lions...will need to improve a bit from Dees

Probably nother very tough match

Has anyone told you that you bear a striking resemblance to TDK Elmer?

Doc shoulder is an issue....maybe put him on a roaming wing role??????

It's a worry that we are playing so conservatively right now and had less shots on goal than both Sydney and Melbourne.

Voss has alluded in his press conferences that its not by design. Seems our players are tightening up, particularly since the few times the likes of Newman and Gov did go for more aggressive kicks vs Sydney they back fired big time.

A bit worrying, especially compared to how we played earlier in our winning run and watching GWS take it on.
