Charlie to stop being superman and use his skills up the ground around the arc more.

Marchbank lucky but JSOS or Boyd for him could be a thought.

Brisbane have choked in recent finals and like Covid year had it in their grasp and failed. Pressure is very much on them.

Word is the game will be on Saturday at 4.35pm
bloody hope so, already booked flights for saturday morning and sunday evening return...

Also got a ticket to the game via the club prematch function, here's the link for those travelling and not wanting to risk the members sale.

Isn’t it one way or another any way?
Sorry to intrude and well done you are a chance against brissy if you bring your A game. But maybe if gws win they won't travel back home till Sunday the afl may think it's unfair on them backing up again Friday. But I think port will get it done anyway so I think you will be playing sat. Good luck

Okay, this has always bugged me but can the AFL change their naming conventions so semi-finals are actually semi-finals? Why is it called a preliminary final?

It's a nightmare explaining this to a foreigner!
Qualifying, elimination and preliminary finals all make some degree of sense. Semi finals feels like they ran out of ideas and 'semi' got the nod ahead of 'the other ones'.

Yep same grabbed a couple just to lock it in. Gabba is small Brisbane are very well supported in big games and I saw a lot of people booking flights post game 😄 .

Think we put so much emphasis on winning the contested ball that we went back to the old Carlton habit of collapsing in on the contest. This affected the quality of our out balls and was responsible for a lot of our turnovers. Melbourne had someone sitting off the back of stoppages unchecked pretty well all night, and they moved the ball so much easier as a result. Will be crucial to fix v the Bears.

Out: Owies, Kemp, Kennedy

Owies was poor last week and diabolical tonight. Just doesn't have the brownie points to survive two poor finals.

Hopefully Kemp learnt a bit tonight. Didn't pay his man enough respect and paid the price. Played way too loose, couldn't close out contests, beaten in the air consistently...always caught in between. And the selfish shot at goal late when he should have centred it sealed the omission for me.

Kennedy looked off the pace, though played a smart game up forward. With two forwards coming in I'd prefer Dow's form and fitness. Our stoppage work hasn't looked convincing since he got the boot.

A few more will be looked at. Cunners was quiet, but his clean hands may be needed at the Gabba. I suspect The Sink stays in for Rayner.

Brisbane form line is impressive but definitely beatable. They are 12-0 at the Gabba in 2023 so we will be hoping for unlucky number 13 for them

In their recent games this season prior to the dismantling of Port by 48, they had a narrow 12 point win over the Saints at the Gabba but that was also because they scored 9.18 against 9.6, they beat the Pies at Marvel by 34, they beat the Crows by 6 at the Gabba, they beat the Dockers by 3 at Freo, they lost at the Gold Coast by 41, they beat the Cats at the Gabba by 11 and they lost the Dees at the G by 1 after a choke and 21 point 3 quarter time lead.

So their last 3 wins at the Gabba before Port were by 12 points, 6 points and 11 points and they got smashed away at the Gold Coast and had narrow wins on the road against Dees and Freo - plus the impressive win against Pies. So absolutely beatable.

In their recent finals at the Gabba:
2022 elimination final beaten Richmond by 2 points with a goal to Daniher with 70 second to go stealing the win
2021 semi final loss to Bulldogs by 1 point
2020 prelim final loss to Cats by 40 points
2020 qualifying final win over Tigers by 15 points (Tigers won the flag 3 weeks later)
2019 semi final loss to Giants by 3 points
2019 qualifying final loss to Tigers by 47 points

So prior to the Port win they were 2 wins and 4 losses since 2019 - one of those wins was won with about a minute to go against a team that finished 7th last season.

Lions were the highest scoring team in 2023 home and away season and 6th hardest to score against. From memory 19 out of the 20 most recent grand finalists were top 4 for scores against and I think the exception was 5th. So lions would be the first grand finalist not in the top 5 in recent history if they win the Prelim. Lions were 10th in scores against last season so they have improved but are traditionally not as difficult to score against as most premiership winning teams.

We can win this…

If you can, switch to Friday afternoon flight as there’s probably a 40% chance we play at the Gabba next Friday night
