It's really only this board that constantly tells the story of how Adelaide overpaid for Rankine. I just don't think the wider footy industry thinks that.

I don't either. If anything, it's been closer to we underpaid for him.

To be fair - we probably did. After all, we've bought a decade of service from a club-altering talent. Heck, we even saw that this year with how effortlessly we were able to switch from a team who is tough but without a descernable identity to a hyper-offensive one. That does not happen without Rankine.

I don't think we believe that at all. We seem more pragmatic in the sense of we'll screw over clubs when appropriate, and expect to be in return. This whole talk about us trying to keep good relations is just bigfooty drinking the stupid juice.

I wouldn't have accepted less if I was in Gold Coast shoes, especially if I was confident I was sitting on multiple gun NGA prospects in the next draft which makes a '23 first worthless. After all, Rankine at that point is a former pick 2, only 22, right on the cusp of superstardom. It's also quite likely that was the minimum.

I'm sure Gold Coast wouldn't have appreciated less, but in the very same trade period they were offering up pick 7 to get rid of a player.

They placed no value on their own assets in that situation, but with Rankine it was the complete opposite?

Gold Coast shot themselves in the foot by offering up their first round pick in a salary dump and were desperate for pick 5 to compensate for it. We obliged, instead of calling out their **** up and pointing out they could have had a similar pick to ours if they didn't just give it away willy-nilly.

We should have been insulted if they were calling our other picks worthless while simultaneously giving up their picks and players for nothing to another club. And if it came down to it I bet Gold Coast would have caved to a reduced offer from us like they've done for about a dozen other deals with other teams.

I don't think that happened at all. Zero chance.

Adelaide gave up what they did to get the deal across the line - but it would have been convincing Rankine's manager and maintaining relationships with them that would have been the priority. Adelaide needed to show that they were committed to getting a deal across the line before Rankine's reps would have agreed to publicly choose us.

People constantly underestimate how much impact managers have on what deals happen and don't happen.
Imagine if we did to Rankine what we did to Gibbs the first time

So. No BZT. No Jordan Sweet. No Grundy. No Esava.

It is funny the different styles the 2 local teams have.

Port desperately trying to get anyone to choose them, to make them seem popular.

We seem to be very specific and only wanting to cherry pick exact talent
I think its because of where our lists are at

If you look at our defence (allowing that we may let Doedee go), we have when fit, Murray, Butts, Keane and maybe Borlase (if he can be retained on Cat B list possibly) - thats plenty of cover for the key posts and some pretty decent quality too. Then we have Worrell who can also play tall but can be 3rd man intercept. Then Max M - 250 game in the making, then Milera, Hinge, Jones, Nankervis. We bat far deeper than Port there

I am not even going to bother listing the forward lines as our is miles better than theirs and both ends of the ground for us are still very young which bodes very well

So we can afford to be specific in those areas, but I'll bang on about it until its solved is the need to bring in top end talent into the midfield to help what we already have. However, if we somehow traded up and ended up securing Watson as that mercurial small forward to free up Rachele and Rankine to play majority Midfield, that would be a big win too and a big step towards fixing that midfield going forward

Port have big gaps to fill at both ends of the ground and need to attack the trade period like they do

maybe reid is better than we think as these are all spuds and wouldn't want them

maybe its ports recruiters not list management that is good

Yes having only 2 ruckmen on our list is definitely doing us wonders.

I see absolutely no point in having more than two..

when the club are stubbornly going to only play ROB.. regardless of his form.. which has been fxxkn terrible more often than not over the last couple of years.

no young ruck would want to come to us.. they’d see no opportunity to play AFL if they did so.

That’s the issue, not the two ruck set up.

What's the current worst case scenario?

Playing Himmelberg and Thilthorpe together if both ROB and Strahan go down?

Are we actively linked to anyone at all yet this year? Any whispers?
