The League weighed up bringing in the new model for this year, but was met with strong resistance from clubs who had already traded in future picks under the current model.

It means this will be the last year of the current model before the new points system is introduced next year.

Across the changes, around 10,000 points have been shaved off the DVI in the new system, including taking away points for any pick after No.54. Under the previous system, points were attached to picks through to No.73.

The No.1 pick value will remain at 3000 points but there will be a steeper drop-off in points thereafter. From picks 2-10, all of those picks are worth at least 100 points fewer in next year's model, while that gap grows as the draft goes on.
Pick 20 in the current model is worth 912 points and in the new model will be worth 757 points. Pick 30 in the current model garners a club 629 points but in the new model will have only 454 points attached to it.

By pick 40, the gap is almost at 200 points – this year will be the last time it is worth 429 points and next year it has been assigned 238 points.

This has all been done so clubs are not able to match bids by stocking up on middle-range draft picks, with the AFL keener for them to have to pay fairer price for father-son and Academy players. It will also make it far more difficult next year and beyond to match multiple bids on players within the same draft without going into a points deficit.
To that end, the AFL looked closely at the 'matching zone' of the draft, where clubs had typically stocked up on picks and points to match on prospects between pick 29 and 46. In that part of the draft alone, nearly 3500 points have been taken out of the new DVI.

The change in points system for 2025 will have an impact on this year's Trade Period and Telstra AFL Draft, with club list bosses and recruiters having to navigate future picks worth a different value to this year's draft selections.

Gold Coast will be one club in that boat, given the Suns have a No.1 pick contender – midfielder Zeke Uwland – tied to their Academy for next year as well as a number of other exciting talents.
Brisbane's Daniel Annable and Sydney's Lachie Carmichael, Noah Chamberlain and Max King also shape as potential Academy selections next year, while Collingwood father-son prospect Thomas McGuane, son of former Magpie Mick, has shown exciting signs playing with the Western Jets this year and will also be in the club's planning for 2025.

Isaac Waller (Brisbane), Koby Evans (West Coast) and Hussien El Achkar (Essendon) are other Academy players with ties next year.

It means as clubs are throwing in future picks for deals, they will be working on a different points economy to this year's draft, adding another element to the upcoming trade frenzy.

I would be very surprised for Zeke to go top 5 pick as HB, wing. I do like him as a player, he looks like a great disposal. But he does not strike me as a top pick. What do I know.

He could be our Errol Gulden. He will go high, his footskills and performances already in the bank will keep him up the order.

I think from next year we'll see a fair few northern academy kids at other clubs, as with this new bidding it makes it impossible to match them all at the top end without going into deficit.
I agree. I guess, deficit is OK if it's a good prospect.

Looking forward to days when Suns play finals and lure back some academy kids from Vic teams 😂

I guess it's way too early to say but I think pick 10 is high. To be honest, I still don't understand why Lombard is valued pick 13 after some pretty awesome performances. Did not he win the best player award?

Difference is Cal likes Zeke, but doesn’t like Lombard
(Only kinda joking, since it’s his mock draft)

Thought this points change might’ve been even tougher on the clubs. Regardless next year could be a bit of chaos with some many teams looking for points. Trading back into the drafts with picks from the future. After matched selections looks certainly the best strategy when trying to get multiple players

Big call. We all have favourites. Let's see in 5 years.
A skillful user off half back will be more useful than another undersized midfielder.

It will be interesting to see how the Suns select from the academy over the next few years. Generally the "best" player most years will be a midfielder, but you only need so many. May have to start passing on a few soon.

Last year 2 best were talls. Will Zeke be better than Read, Walter over his career? Or Graham for that matter?

Personally, I am a big fan of Rogers with clean hands, good disposal too on top of his speed. Looking forward to see what he can produce next year after full pre-season.

I suspect next year we will pass on some after Zeke.

I think he will end up better than all mentioned. Long way out I know, but for a team crying out for footskills and the way he exploded this year as an bottom ager has me seeing a star.

Might have no choice when we make finals :moustache:

Next year it looks like being Uwland (HB/Mid), Patterson (Mid/Fwd), Addinsall (Mid), and Murray (Mid). No point taking all of them to add to Rowell, Anderson, Humpa, Flanders, Davies, Graham, Rogers, Lombard (and Touk).

The upside is the club has been watching these kids for years, they have a good line on their characters.

Very likely that we have to let some go elsewhere, which is good in the end as AFL players seem to suffer hugely from homesickness.

I partially agree here, eventually some will get through to the other clubs

In saying that none of those guys will be AFL mids in year 1/2/3 etc. then who knows what happens after that. It’s become more and more frequent even the pure u18s aren’t getting mid clock early in their AFL career

Took 10 years for Horse to finally put Heeney in the mids

Yeah and you need depth and competition for spots. It's a great position to be in.

Also just because there have been some high potential players through the academy recently doesn't mean it will happen every year either.

Is the restriction still that a prelim team can match one first round bid, a elimination/semi final team can match two first round bids and a bottom 10 team can match unlimited first round bids? How are Brisbane able to match first round bids for Levi Ashcroft and Sam Marshall if they are competing in a prelim tonight?

Another reason not to sell the bank to get Rioli in the door

Yes

One is FS, one is academy so assume they are treated seperately?

The rule is only for academy, not F/S. Top 4 finish max 1 bid match in round 1. 5-8 max 2 bids matches in round 1. 9-18 no limit for round 1 bid matches.

Lions getting Ashcroft brothers as F/S, both basically pick 1, talk about luck while being on top.
