The Suns haven’t been quite as focused on this year’s draft as others, as they cast an eye to 2025 with some more gun Academy players coming through.

They have also known for some time that this year’s top Suns Academy member – Leo Lombard – would attract a first-round bid. That is expected to come as early as one of St Kilda’s picks at 7 and 8, with the Saints having not hidden their frustrations about the father-son and Academy bidding system in recent times. Lombard is a 179cm midfielder who was a joint-winner of the Larke Medal for the best player of the under-18 national championships this year. He has been likened to Gold Coast veteran Touk Miller and played in a VFL premiership for the Suns as a 16-year-old last year.

Gold Coast would like to nab an extra first round pick this year, reaching out to the likes of Greater Western Sydney, Richmond and Sydney to try and find one. If a deal can’t be done, the Suns are likely to just have one further pick late in the order after matching the Lombard bid.

All defenders are interceptors these days. There isn't really any gorilla dour defenders. Everyone intercepts because that's the best way of attack.
Yeah fair point, even your KPD's need to be able to football.

I'd rather steer clear of blokes with concussion issues though, same with Hotton, too many injuries issues.

I think we are in a great position to take a punt on a slider like Trainor. He wouldn't need to play AFL for 2 or so seasons, and would get to learn from Chucky and Sarge. A perfect apprenticeship. Doesn't have to play straight away

We are also going to overpay for a pick in the 20s this year, I see our future first going to someone like Richmond for 23 because A, our future first will get swallowed next year and B, next year's draft doesn't seem to have the depth at the top end this year does. So those melts will be fun 😁

We can't get 23 straight back from Richmond.

All three firsts with get used up for bids next year probably. Just a matter of what the best use for them is.
