All the bitching about FS/Academy players recently, let's see if Richmond or North actually bid on Ashcroft.

I'm expecting hypocrisy.
Cal Twomey stated that neither of those two clubs will bid on Ashcroft. It is St Kilda who is expected to make clubs pay, after their CEO’s statement re academy benefits at their B&F awards.

Yes but Ashcroft is the best player so surely these pious clubs that bitched about our academy players last year should do "the right thing"?

No one will pick 1 will ever bid on an academy player. It’s all about optics and perception they they take the #1 pick. Also, the pick 1 gets cash bonuses so no one would want to gift that to a player they won’t get.

I do agree that pick 2 should make them pay up though!

Jamara Ugle-Hagan was bid on at Pick 1, with Dogs matching. AFL then literally changed the Next-gen Academy rules because of that (and then changed them back again this year…). So it is possible.

But yeah, rarely happens.

The only thing I’m learning from this coverage is that we are getting Leo for a steal if he goes 9/10. Not seeing much that makes any of these kids stand out at the top. Best performing draftee this year, but doesn’t have the same ceiling I’m assuming.

Dimma don’t turn up to much ay

Coaches don't need to be at the draft. Unless you're a bottom of the ladder club who needs to sell the draft picks to your members every year. I don't mind it, we are moving past the draft being the best thing about our season.

Take it with a grain of salt but apparently we have put a lot of time into Luke Trainor in the last few weeks. Combination of concussion issues and behavioural stuff is expecting to see him slide into the late second or as far as the rookie draft and we are firming as one of the few teams expected to take the punt. Have heard this from several sources.

SO IM TOLD

Top 10 pick on talent so could be a steal if it happens.
This is still very much on the cards AFAIK

If the right deal can be found by the sounds of it. He could slide into the mid-late 20s
My understanding and what I was told is;

  • We really like Trainor, but don't need him to play immediately which gives us time to let him work through his concussion problems.
  • Behaviourally, there is some risk, but its a high risk high reward
  • There was an expectation he would slide heavily even as far as the 3rd round but Sydney is looking likely to take the risk as well so the club will need to (or will likely need to) get in before them.

This is very much a SO IM TOLD
