Essendon v GWS should be 40,000 in my opinion. I am not sure it will but with our good form, a strong home crowd should be there to see the boys. There is no excuse, Carlton v GWS got 40,000 too I think? So no reason why we cannot replicate that.

Richmond v Western Bulldogs at the 'G will most likely struggle to get to 45,000 I reckon. Tiger fans would be downbeat after yesterday and Bulldogs are all over the shop with their form at the moment. I would say between 37-39,000

AFL finally realising there are public holidays outside Victoria during the season.

Sunday night football is great when there's a Monday holiday. WA has a day off the first Monday in June - there should always be a game in Perth on that Sunday night. Be nice to play the game on Kings birthday eve in Sydney as well.

I don't have individual player data - I had to correlate my crowd data with AFL Tables to find what games Pendles had missed.

For those players you mentioned I can easily give you the number of crowds over 70k their teams got during their careers but the rest is a manual job.



Those figures are maximums only as whatever games those players missed during those years would have to come off the totals. But I would be amazed if anyone other than Steele was in 2nd place.

Incidentally, Pendlebury has had an amazing ability to turn up for the big games. Out of the 43 games he's missed since 2006 only 3 of them ended up being over 70k, and 1 of those was prior to his debut.

Not a complaint but it is strange, that after round 8 that the reigning premier has played 2 'home games'.

Would've thought the league would want to capitalise on the reigning premier having games at home to start the season, off the back of winning a flag

The last crowd explosion (at the MCG) came with the MCC decision to allow its 50,000+ provisional members access to the reserve for games. This has seen MCC reserve attendances grow significantly in the last 7-8 years and that’s why games at the G now regularly have crowded MCC sections relative to years prior. I think this has helped bigger games more, ensuring neutrals wanting to see a great contest get to go. The recent Cats / Blues game I think exhibit A here. The MCC reserve was basically full and thus never would’ve been the case prior to the change in access policy. Good for crowds, good for members, good $$’s through the til. Everyone wins!

Oh I never really thought of that.

I think as well members who signed up in the 90s are more likely to have done so for Football purposes as that's when Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon started playing big matches there.

Stuart Fox (MCC CEO) last week noted a significant driver of his stadiums crowd growth is down to greater utilisation of the MCC Reserve, by the Provisional category. He said unlike years prior to 2015, the Reserve is almost full for the big games nowadays.

Xavier Campbell (former CEO) noted it on radio leading up to a game in Perth in 2021. Campbell said they had (in 2021) ‘thousands’ (his words) Western Australians on their waiting list for game access memberships that they couldn’t support. So, they aren’t members..

I reckon that at least 30k of the 55k were wearing red and black and there would have been 15k neutrals and maybe 10k Richmond at that game.

My old man has always said that Essendon have the biggest latent support around the country. We just haven’t seen it because they have been crap for so long now.
