Seats still available back quarter of level 2.
Depending on weather it could push 21.
I think it will be 19.
Suns have had a deal for members to bring a friend. And club has also emailed members to get there early.
4pm Sunday is a strange timeslot to play a larger Melbourne club. Combined with Essendon not expected to be any good this year, travelling support will be weaker than otherwise. Regardless, the Suns have been getting ~ 10-11k of their own supporters to games this year. With them playing well you could expect another ~ 2k. Essendon should bring ~ 6-7k so I would be disappointed if the crowd wasn't around 20,000.

Wasn’t it a sell out? Perhaps Geelong have the same issue with the new stadium as Essendon and Carlton have with Marvel?

Geelong now have, what 80,000 members, so resale programmes are pretty important. In addition, the Cats probably have the most regionalised support base in the league, so night matches in Geelong (or Melbourne) are not great for their rural and Melbourne base
Possibly. They did almost get 40k against St Kilda... After all that money was spent, it would be a shame if Geelong can't get high 30s against larger Melbourne clubs.

On the discussion about recent Geelong crowds at Kardinia Park. When it comes to the smaller stadiums that are maxed out by reserved seat members, the crowds generally hover between 80-90%.

Take Subiaco Oval as an example. Capacity of 43,000 but average crowds of 34-38,000 after 2003 despite always being sold out.

When it comes to Kardinia Park, when the capacity isn’t affected by covid or the latest stage of redevelopment, the crowds have still been about 80-90% of capacity.

Since the 2005 stage 1 redevelopment, capacity has increased by 12,000 from 28,000 to 40,000, and currently the attendance average has also gone up by 11,000 from 22,000 to 33,000.

Was yesterday’s crowd on the lower end of filling up the stadium, yes. But it was larger than the three other games down there that wasn’t the first AFL game at the stadium since the last redevelopment (which tends to be an event that helps draw a better turnout rate).

IMG_2837.jpeg

Other than the first game this season, yesterdays crowd was the largest attendance at the stadium since 1993, when health and safety standards were different.

But in the stadiums that have limited seating available for spectators that aren’t reserved seat members, the size of the opposition support is irrelevant. It’s the on-field performance of the teams playing that drives the attendance rate of the home club’s members.

Now Geelong need to figure out how to get their members seat re-sale program to have higher take up’s, so other people can buy the seats that would otherwise be vacant for the game and increase the attendance at each game.

Quality analysis.

It was like that when I went for Essendon v gold coast back in 2012, amazing 12 years on you still hear the same complaints about that stadium, pathetic really.

Would you folk care to explain a bit more what’s happening and how it is failing?

Alistair Lynch on commentary said approx 20k in the house in GC. That's a great crowd to end the weekend.

Love your work, well researched.

(Although it was the 3rd biggest since 1993 - the Richmond game in 2017 pipped it)

Ground only holds 22.5k. Couldn't have been that many empty seats.
Holds 27,500, according to the stadium's website.

About The Stadium
