Some interesting games coming up this weekend but genuinely intrigued by two old foes at the home of footy!

Richmond v Carlon (MCG)

What are we thinking? Surely 55-60,000 ?!
Geelong Essendon will be interesting. Level 1 isn’t sold out, and general admin will probably be the entire level four. There won’t be many cats fans, however the amount of general admin may be enticing for a big Essendon showing? A pretty cheap ticket (or away member) can get you some pretty okay seats on level 4.

The fact a heap of Essendon fans were locked out of the Carlton match in Round 13 and the Collingwood match next week might mean they choose to attend this match instead. If the rain holds off, potentially a mid 60’s crowd? If this match was played 6-7 weeks ago, then it would’ve reached 80k.

True, a poor crowd is on the cards. Cats form has killed any wave of support up the highway you’d think. I reckon anything over 50,000 is reasonable given it’s an Essendon away game, crap slot and poor weather forecast.

Comes down to weather. I’d say between 50-60k weather dependent.

Weather is meant to be grim on Sat and Sun. Bombers won though and are third on the ladder which is more important than Geelong winning.

Lynch is injured and I think Dusty won't play. Reiwoldt let it slip during the interview when he asked if he'd be back for Freo. Looks like Richmond are letting Dusty do what he wants so that he signs a new deal. Once word gets out Tigers fans will sit this one out.

Pendlebury's 400th is due to fall vs Carlton unless I can't count which is a possibility. What's the bet Coll rest him for a couple of games so that it falls vs Bris at the MCG. They can try but not going to hit 92k!! 🤣 If they do that I think we can put a line through them for the flag this year.

Geelong V Essendon.
MCC level 1 seating exhausted, selling level 4. Not huge sales so far on level 4. Though they aren’t too bad. Nearly halfway back in S46-48. Just early selling of S40-45 as fsr.
AFL Members unknown, usually this reserve is only about 1/3 full top level traditionally for this fixture.

Geel/Ess AFL Members about halfway through the front third of the top deck.

Rich/Carl nearly finished the front third of the top deck.

This is great insight! Hopefully Cats supporters by Thursday/Friday realise "Hey, we are in the top 8 still, let's go and support them against this mob for the Country game!" :)

Won't be many cats fans there, bombers are flying and have their eyes on 3rd so will get a big turnout
Saturday night, Cats home game, weather looks miserable - will be 15k less than you'd hope for. For me, could have been 70K if it was a day game and wasnt wet, so id be looking at 55

On a seperate note, this is the annual Country game! It should be given the Saturday afternoon (1:45 pm) slot to allow regional people enough time to get home. AFL have lost sight of this and have thought $$$$

It will backfire on them this weekend unfortunately.

It's the country game that's not played in the country.

Yeah well..I do not think Sheeds would have expected it to be played in a quiet regional town. He built this up so one day, this game would sell out the 'G like Anzac Day & Dreamtime have done.

This fixture has long been a work in progress and could take off once the Bombers get going as a club and Geelong do what they generally do.

You could potentially see 75,000+ for these games in the future if the stars align.

Timing has never been right for this to properly succeed. Now the Bombers are on the rise and the cats are seemingly on the decline.

Correct. It just needed one of the early versions to be a cracking game and a period where each side were going well and it would’ve worked. Its unique and different but it needed a cracking game to build it.

This was never going to work - there is absolutely no rivalry between the clubs and the concept is non sensical. Why Essendon and why at the MCG?

Sheedy has lost his marbles, since he pushed the Dreamtime Game 20 years ago, none of these ‘theme matches’ have worked. This is just Eureka Game 2.0 (Richmond v North Melbourne)

NSW v Queensland @ MCG = 90,084
I'm not one of a "fudging numbers" guy but the first 10 rows of about 10 bays were empty, the last 15 rows of the Members on level 4 was barely filled, as was the back 10 rows of about 5 bays on level 4 on the Ponsford. Throw in the fact they didn't really sell standing room tickets and that was absolutely only an 85,000 crowd at best, even accepting people on bars/dining. I was at both this and the Dusty 300 and there was clearly fewer empty at Dusty 300.

It wouldn't be anything new for the nrl to fudge crowd figures, it's a weekly thing over there. The one thing is though, it is a one off event, so wouldn't have the reserved seat member no shows, like big afl games have.

I don’t agree. Let’s say the MCC Reserved had 4,500 empty seats (18,500 / 23,000 capacity). That leaves about 5,000 empty seats in the rest of the stadium for the total capacity if 100,000. 90,084 seems logical to me on what I saw.

Yes but probably more people in the bars than usual and less actually watching the game. Many just went for the experience. The MCG does not fudge crowds.

My theory has always been its a way to guarantee the yearly Essendon gets played at the MCG, just like Easter Monday.

This suits Essendon who don't want to go to the Cattery. If they make the game a thing its harder to take that away from them.

This also suits Geelong as they need an excuse to give to members as to why they play home games at the MCG other than "It makes us money" and "it helps us win finals".

It wasn’t the original theory but it works concurrently.
