Our game is so reliant on scrambling and chaos footy. I don’t get why we try to become a slick ball movement team. just kick long, create outnumbers and we’ll get something going our way more times than not. We have big bodies across the field. Seems like we lose a bit of ourselves when we try to become a back half team.

I think the long kick down the line is a fail to a pack. We wont outnumber because 1) In most cases we have one less fwd than they have defenders and 2) we are slow of leg speed with our midfielders.

The above is literally what the opposition want us to do to initiative their rebound goals.

We need to improve our decision makers around the fwd 50 mark. It's why Austin is looking at E Hollands and Fantasia over say Owies. Owies is a good set shot for goal but terrible with his scrub kicks inside 50.

Pies are looking for Sidy/Pendles/Daicos x2 just outside the 50 zone where possible. Cripps as our captain just bombs it in rather than find an elite kick on our team instead. Zero craft.

We were barely going half pace and many look disinterested. As such I can’t read anything into game plan, skill, connection etc

Our game is built on pressure and intensity - if we don't bring that (like tonight) we will look very similar to the first half of 2023.

We were going early Soapy. Mckays hit on the Dees player early suggests that. Hollands was going 100% individually. Def would agree from midway through the third the game died.

Not even kidding I'd like to see us bring in Monahan for E.Hollands the first 2 rounds. Kids built like some sort of Frankenstenian creation. Power, Speed, Agility... He's a freak.

Give him a go and see what he can do while our fwd options are thin.
We're not thin on forward options, and he's no use to us while he's scrambling around without any regard for system.

Talented and will shake things up, but needs to show he can either do it consistently, or figure out how to unlock the game a bit.
Has Cotterell lost his spot. I saw more from Billy Wilson in 3 minutes compared to cotters in 83.
Cottrell remains someone who is more forward than mid, has an elite running capacity, but not much feel for defending or creating an attack, certainly from midfield anyway.

But that suits our 22 just fine if we're to have Fantasia playing next week.

Meh, in our golden years 70's & 80's I dont ever remember us winning a practice game. come round one we would trounce the opponent.
We hear this every year but it was a different era, where we had a lot of proven players, whether their proving grounds had been in the VFL or interstate.

Knowing one's capabilities and that of the team was enough in those days due to a lack of concrete tactics and systems.

Easy to do the extra running and destroy your opponents with an outnumber due to the lack of consistent professional standards across the league, a situation our club later fell into and is arguably still climbing out of.

Also a much bigger feeder system through the season too in the form of the reserves and the U19s, even the odd transfer.

We got totally 'Maxed"...he just controlled the game from the onset and we had no answer. Pitto was woefully short of a gallop, and TDK was left with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

For mine, it just once shows again we rely on the grunt of the midfield to stay in the game. We're awful on the rebound but great in the clinches. We get beaten in the clinches and we're totally exposed.

There wasn't a lot to take out of the game except how much we rely on Charlie and Harry to kick our goals.....which is why we'll miss JSOS as the 3rd marking option, and why Jack Martin is crucial in the 22. Losing Motlop early didn't help the cause, but we have to have more avenues to goals than the twin towers. Fantasia is creative and can create headaches for the oppo, but his body is made of ricepaper, so we realistically can't pencil him in week in week out. We desperately need a fit and firing Motlop and Durds to wreak some havoc in the forward 50.

Anyway, even at this early stage, it appears to be no different to last year.....that our best will no doubt match it with any side in the comp. The issue for mine is that 2023 also exposed how awful we can be when the wheels fall off. We play a predominantly inside game to get numbers at the ball, against the grain of the current flavor of the month....which is great for finals footy that's played in a phone box, but whether it stacks up to clubs during the year which play the slingshot remains to be seen.

As Kingy says, we'll likely punch our way into the finals this year.

We certainly led the way with standards back in the day…one of the first teams to move to menthols..😀

It’s a practice match so let’s not get too caught up into it. However, there were some signs to be worried about.

L. Young is a worry, if that’s what he/our whole backline has to offer then Brisbane is going to towel us up. Daniher and/or Hipwood would be licking their lips.

Pittonet shouldn’t be the number 1 option going forward. Like I said it was a practice game, but if we continue to see that throughout the year where we persist with him, then we are going to be in big trouble.

Positives: Fantasia is going to be a great pick up.

The Hollands boys, Ollie in particular, is a machine.

Harry, despite a couple of kicks for goal, is an absolute gun. Him heading into the ruck adds even more strings to his bow.

exactly. We are a poor skilled team with a slow midfield. The margin should of been a 10 goal plus belting if Melbourne kicked straight.

It's almost like the AFL made us play a practice match 6 days earlier, in the middle of a 38 degree day. Look what happened with GWS and Adelaide the week after they played in that round 1 stinker last year.

Flat as buggery. Cerra, Gov and Cotts the best examples, just didn't want to be there.

Yep, we didn't look that interested last night. Contest and pressure is our one wood. On evidence so far we don't look to have added any refinement to the gameplan. I'm hoping that was us keeping the cards close to the chest last night. Lewis Young just doesn't have it. I fear that Joey or Hipwood are going to have a night out. No further injuries and more miles in legs. Onwards and upwards.
