Regarding Haynes. I was rapt with us recruiting him for peanuts.
Smart and reliable player when fit. Overcame illness issues and played some really good footy for GWS last year. Only squeezed out because of their depth of quality tall and hybrid defenders.
A grade interceptor. Reliable. Knows when to go, when to stay. Good skills. Perfect fit for our backline.
Had some heated debates with a regular poster who didn’t see him as any more than depth. I see him as way more than that.

Fit and rarely injured >>>> Most Carlton defenders

Very well spoken by Kemp. It’s taken us a while but a forward target seems like the natural fit with his attributes and skills.

Was thinking the same thing. Mature, thoughtful responses to the questions being asked. I'll be wrapped for him if he can make a success of that third tall forward role. Have always thought that he has the talent to succeed. Just a matter of finding the best place to utilise him. Hopefully we've done this.

Not so much unfit as a bit lost. Seemed to want to apply pressure but kept finding himself a bit too far away to really do so. Made him look like he was in the middle of a game of keepings off a couple of times - manic run one way, then turn and manic run the other, for no real result. I think he's one of those "natural" footballers to whom structures and zones don't come naturally.

Ultimately, I suspect he might have been asked to play a different role, and just struggled to nail it. Think Fantasia played the role Lij would normally have had.
Something NQR with EH presently, the way he plays when he finally gets given a run....

When he's clearly, very clearly, best 22 all other things being equal.

Will be interesting to see if he's picked round 1.

I agree, he's a top shelf footballer. We got some mobile talls now to play around Weitering who have really nice skills and footy smarts.

He's what we hoped Marchbank would be but unfortunately injuries got the better of him. When Marchbank was fit we made a prelim. So having Haynes fit is a big one for us.

Yepheard similar but don't get it tbh. Lookeda pretty reasonable size and pretty stable through his core already.
For most of their junior careers Lucas was seen as the better player, however Ben overtook him (at least peoples perception of his ability did) in the last couple of years. The knock was that Lucas was a bit more of an outside player.

But Lucas just looks like a natural on the wing. Knows how to hold his shape and did everything that was asked of him and is far cleaner than a kid of his age playing for a spot should be. Well down to Arr0w for picking up his abilities early.

It's going to be a fun ride with Lucas, seems as natural on the wing as his father did in his first year in 1995.

It's going to be even more fun if Ben is actually the better player.

The wing is a very specialised role these days and luckily for us Lucas is almost an anomaly in terms of junior talents in that he's played wing for practically his entire football journey. Most AFL wings are just failed on ballers or half backs that weren't great defensively so got pushed up the ground, thus why it generally takes most a while (Blacres) to really come into the role at the next level.

I'm excited to see Lucas in action and if he can hold his spot through the year I'll be overjoyed.

That said, in terms of ability to impact games I still rate Ben the better talent. That could be to do with role more than anything but his ability to link play through the midfield and unlock other more damaging players around him (Sid Draper mostly) was fantastic. Others will disagree about his kicking but imo if he improves that aspect of his game he's going to be a seriously good player as a Rowbottom/Dunkley type defensive mid.

100% the best take away from this game was the second quarter.

When the Giants had momentum we didn't give up a 5 goals to nothing run which undid or good work for the other 3 quarters - we absorbed, resisted and repelled. Massive change from prior years
At the end of that quarter I was impressed, it was typical last year to lose the upper hand and leak horribly for a stretch.

Instead we rode it out like a mature team

Very noticeable that our defense is now set up for intercept marking.

Weiters, Gov, Cow, now joined by SOS and Haynes - potentially doc at times - all very good above their heads. I assume we recognized that as a bit of a weakness last year.

If our mids can put consistent pressure on the ball entries we should get a lot of rebound off D50.

Will be interesting to see how Boyd fits in. Is he a certain starter? If so I would assume that means Ollie is playing VFL.

I have our defence as McGovern Weitering Haynes Saad Hollands Silvagni and Cowan. I also think Docherty plays as a utility and will spend some time back there as well. Would not be surprised at all if Silvagni is used as a utility playing predominantly back with stints forward.

I think there is a fair bit that needs to change team structure wise. Having at least three good overhead threats forward is one of them but also going with a taller and mobile defence like this is the other.

Having a utility in the side who can play all three areas like Docherty is another. That means we can change structure a little if we want to and go smaller in some areas.

I can see our backline working really well and I hope our intercepting can have some intimidation factor and just hold the opposition up a little. Makes it easier to defend and apply pressure if this happens.

I think Boyd will be in the VFL for now until there is unjury. I rate Boyd but I think that backline is stacked, going to be hard to break into it. If he is to challenge anyone's spot it will be Hollands.

Zaccy bench cam 😂😂😂

His remark after Kemps ripper mark...... "what a hybrid ". Love it.

Got me thinking ...... Is Weiterbot a hybrid? Fully electric?
I'm thinking nuclear powered.

Zac has been one of the standouts preseason. Looks like he is going to have the year we have always wanted from him. 🤞
