That’s not good… unfortunately I think we are about to throw away a first for our 3rd development ruck. Wgat a waste of drafting Edwards
Seconded.

If we get one later on I'm all for it. Trading what could be a top 10 pick for yet another ruck with a 3-5 year development curve isn't what we need though.

Even if we have a great year next year, it's still not what we need....and on the off chance that it is, then as you've said it makes the Edwards and Conway picks redundant.

Haha I feel you on this.

But… can I play devils advocate. We have bemoaned the lack of a top ruckman for so so so long. Since ottens.

If we take Dodson and one of him Conway or Edwards become an all Australian ruck - perhaps it was all worth it.

Outside of our current best 23 I think Conway, Clark, Knevitt and Clohesy all need AFL games to continue their development. If O'Sullivan has a big pre season you can add him to that list. We shouldn't be desperate for the instant gratification of trading up this year. It will be a grim year next year if we trade the FF to Richmond then don't make finals.
agree we don’t need to trade up and also agree with your choice of players with potential…but I’m not sure players need AFL games to develop potential. Both Mannagh and Humphries were consistently dominating the VFL and, when they got their chance, they knew they had earned it and weren’t going to let the opportunity go easily. Yep, some players need opportunity but, equally, others respond to “earning” it.

If we trade up/offer up our F1 for a ruck (Dodson) I'll spew up Terry Wallace style.

Now, the guy might turn out to be a beauty, and I hope like hell he does. But I'll still be dirty until that time comes.

Our ruck situation has been so weird for years.

Having Conway on the list has seemed to stop us from really trying to find a guy who is ready to come in and do the job.

Stanley is still running around lol.

Edwards was a little shock but fair enough... but another one at the cost of an F1... yeah I'll spew.

Dodson looks like a lesser Ben Mcevoy (looked at him for 8 seconds by the way).

In Wells we trust.

We would've gone from neglecting the position for a decade to massively overcompensating.

As great as our club is and for as much as they do get right, we're not a club who can afford to just drop first and early second round picks on ruckman for 3/4 years.

The academy sides could do it, maybe Norf these days too, but we're not one of them.

It's a luxury position. You just find a guy who's competent from another club, or develop one cheaply and you go from there.

They're available every year. Someone like Lloyd Meek would've been all we needed and more.

I agree but I feel having Conway on our list impacts getting in a guy that is ready to do the job.

We got old blokes rucks and young blokes rucks with zero in the sweet spot.

I blame list management for that.

Maybe we have tried and tried hard to rectify it but I’m not sure.

A Jordan Sweet type on the list would have been fine.

What if they drafted a Waybill type instead just because they rate him a top 10 pick when no one else did. It's a Liam Stocker situation.

My first thought was it's a horrible trade, and I still probably feel that way.

But if the reports are true that they offered their first rounder to every club from pick 8 onwards, there are 20 instances where clubs also preferred to take the later pick this year than a potential top 3 pick next year. Regardless of the specific player it seems a pick in the teens/early 20s is worth more this year than a top 5 next year year.

TBH I'd be ok with never using a 1st rounder on a ruck ever again.

The elite ones are nice to have, but you can make do with a role player. Particularly if you trade in a 23yo second stringer where you don't have to wait 5 years to get any return on investment

There is a time value of draft pick, the closer you are to contention the greater it is. I can get why a team might prefer a pick in the early teens to a future 1st rounder. Especially if their plan is to draft a small.

For a team like North, Richmond etc, it should approach near zero.

We have the advantage of player lifestyle and location. Just brought in Bailey Smith because of that reason. Jezza previously.

Perhaps the club are already in the ear of a few players about to come out of contract?

What was evident in our recent preliminary final loss to Brisbane was the absence of quality ruckman who could make the most of what we have emerging. Stanley has been a very good pickup but if we can now find an elite ruckman in the form of either Conway or Dodson, we have a nucleus capable of challenging for premierships in the next 10 years.

Richmond are banking talls. Smart thing to do at the start of a re-build

It is but I'm not sure they have picked the right ones. Sims over gerryn or shanahan is odd to me
