If we don’t nominate him though and he does get bid on does that mean we can’t match?
Yeah, I'm not sure we'd want Benny with our main draft picks though. He's a long way down the order.

I expect us to run the gauntlet and hope he gets through the main draft

As a Cat B though, he'd be a huge get.

That would little sense UNLESS we are splitting 13 for 2 picks. Because we'll have 5 senior spots open.

There's interest in Barrett. He's interviewed with many clubs.

I like Barrett and R. Burgoyne and want both of them. Is there a way in which we can still take five picks in the main draft (by splitting pick 13 into two picks between 18 and 23, and then also using pick 29, 36 and 50), getting Burgoyne as a category A rookie and Barrett as a category B rookie?

If anyone is interested in following, a few of us are doing a mock draft on X

Cliffhanger on Port's pick, Travaglia has slipped! I'll make a decision soon.

Yes, if we delist McEntee or Williams it gives us a Cat A spot for Burgoyne. Then need Barrett to slip through to Cat B (which we already have a spot for). We already also have 5 senior spots so can take 18, 23, 29, 36 and 50. Overall 7 draftees is possible, but we need to delist a Cat A rookie and Barrett needs to slip through the national draft

Update: Some people here won't be happy 😉😂 I stuck to my guns with Hynes

How dare you!

Pick 13 = Berry

My problems with Hynes:

RMCentral analysis has him below average speed and endurance. Speed is very hard to improve- will get caught out at next level. Endurance is a worry because at u18 level it means not enough preparation and at afl level it means it will take years to get him to the level required to play. For reasons expressed above, with 13 I want someone who will play in 2025.

The attraction is the big bodied mid thing but I also question whether that is a desperate need in the modern game. I also haven’t given up hope of Mead, Jones or Sinn playing that role, if needed, in the Whiskey era (ie post-Wines era).

Ah I don't see the speed being an issue tbh. For starters I think he's got plenty of speed around him, so someone who can hit a target is important. Endurance wise, I get your point and agree. But he's put in a tonne of work this year into his conditioning and has been able to run out games far better. He's a leader too (co-captain at Stingrays) so his work ethic is top notch. I think he can easily play in 2025 in a forward line tbh.

For me, it's between him or Dattoli. If you look at the positives, he can break tackles easily which is an important trait in modern day footy. He's not slow, he's just not ultra quick. But his disposals are usually very effective and up forward he's a marking target. He's tall but I wouldn't say, at least yet, that he's a big body like Jones.

Was Travaglia or Hotton there?
Both were, I couldn't convince myself to take a Half-Back at 13, just didn't seem like what we needed. I know there's an argument for Travaglia to move into midfield but that won't happen imo with us for at least a couple years.

Hotton there, but I think he'll slip on draft night too. I guess I went for exposed form over the small sample size + ACL. Club might have a different view on it than me but I for one am excited to see what Hynes would be able to do in that forward half. He's criminally underrated outside Victoria, now there's so much noise amongst Vic clubs.

Didn't allow trading in the mock draft due to difficulties, but certainly would've split the pick if I were allowed to. Just makes way more sense

I think you are forgetting logan evans/spp. We would have 5 spots in total (us a cat b spot). I dont know the breakdown of main list and cat a rookies.
This list has 43 players (says 45 but missing 2 numbers in sequence).

Has 5 Cat A rookies. Narkle is now delisted so we have 4 Cat A rookies incl Logan Evans. So no more Cat A spots left.

Has 38 seniors incl SPP. Now we have Clurey, Dixon, McKenzie, K Marshall, Scully, Houston, FEvans, McCallum gone which is 8 exits. 3 trade ins in Luko, Richards and Atkins. Leaves us with 5 senior spots.

No patterns at all emerging with every man and his dog doing mock/phantom drafts these days.

None the wiser who we are targeting.

I could prob do one without having watched a single under 18 game and it would hold as much weight as the rest of them.

No one is trying to predict or act as if they have Intel when they do mock drafts lol

It's a case of rationalising a pick to a club. Not sure why you thought it would tell you who the club is targeting.

Cal Twomey’s phantom which he releases close to the draft is usually pretty spot on. Any others are just speculation for fun.

That senario would require an extra list spot be opened up to get Rome Burgoyne in as a category A rookie. We currently only have 5 spots to be filled either entirely by the main draft or a mixture of main draft and rookie A draft. Bringing in Atkins has made it impossible to get both Rome and Louie Montgomery and left us hoping Benny won't be called in the National draft so we can get him as a Cat B rookie. I'd cut Williams and McEntee if possible, as I can't see them holding a spot on merit.

AFL list sizes is always up for conjecture. My understanding is if we have 38 senior list players we can have 6 Cat A rookies but less one for each Cat B rookie (max 2).

Currently we have 1 Cat B rookie (Moss) and if we add another (Barrett) then we have room for 4 Cat A.

If Barrett is added to the main list then we would have 5 Cat A rookie spots available.

And as Addy23 said 4 Cat A rookie spots are filled.

Is there another list lodgement before the draft?

Yes, if we delist McEntee or Williams it gives us a Cat A spot for Burgoyne. Then need Barrett to slip through to Cat B (which we already have a spot for). We already also have 5 senior spots so can take 18, 23, 29, 36 and 50. Overall 7 draftees is possible, but we need to delist a Cat A rookie and Barrett needs to slip through the national draft
Agreed, it's just about inevitable Williams will be delisted at the end of the 2025 season so why not cut the cord early and take a punt on getting a better player through what is supposed to be a very strong the draft, and McEntee doesn't have too many strings to his AFL bow either.

The old rule was 38+6.

Since Covid it is 38+4

Then CatB are extra. Hence why good cat B is incredibly valuable and if Benny sneaks onto our list as cat B we'll be stoked. It's also why the SANFL team has struggled that bit more to field a side as we've been playing with 2 less AFL players the last few years.
