After the first half of the season Josh Smillie was flying high as most people's pick 1 favourite due to his massive frame, slick movement in traffic, clean hands, penetrating boot and ability to consistently hit the scoreboard. After a quieter than anticipated champs series Smillie lost some form through the back half of the season which has seen him slide down the boards. If his early season play is more indicative of what we can expect from Josh in the future then a team picking him in the middle or back end of the top 10 will be getting a bargain.

His 20m sprint time might be avg but his 10m time would probably be pretty good.

I didnt realise he was so good by foot, I know it was highlights but some of those kicks were delicious.
Can kick a stinker off 1 step.

That's 2025 potential top 5 pick Greeves (191+cm) next to Smillie. I thought Greeves was a big mid/Smillie equivalent....

Smillie is ****ing enormous. Greeves is a big mid, Smillie is a KP sized mid.

Got a good shoe on him this kid.
If we could somehow hold onto pick 6 it would be nice but I still take FOS over him every time.
I love FOS but I take Smillie and Lindsay/Hotton/Berry/Whitlock over FOS alone

Compelling argument. I still think we can get the best of both worlds if we get North's F1.

We need a minimum of 2 KP players drafted nothing less. Remember Gibcus is unknown with injuries, Fawcett has traits , Gray has traits , but we need cover developing. Blight needs to get super fit trim down and he good be a chance.
this is contrary to best available.

if there are better players pick them.

It is not like we are ready to top off a list

I love your confidence but it won’t be that easy. Who could we have got this year. If Cadman does look around there will be plenty of competition, we won’t look as attractive to new players as we did when we got Lynch. It would be crazy to put all our eggs in that basket. While that would be the way to go if possible the reality is far different to theory. No doubt a lot of opposition supporters thought Balta would be up for grabs next year but that dream has now gone for them.
We don't just target OOC or FA players. We will be able to afford (comfortably) any contracted player as well.

Bolton and Rioli are prime examples.

The work put into acquiring Lynch was over 2-3 years, yes, we got him in 2018 after a flag and an early exit in the prelim. and there's not much doubt that he came to us on the back of that success. But we were into him for a long time begore he got on board.

This is the thing though, Prestia, Caddy and Nank got on the train early. We're a destination club, we're making the right moves and quality players will want to be part of playing in front of the Tiger Army.

I'm not saying put all our eggs in the player buying basket, just not this year when we have so many picks where there are highly rated, mids, forwards, HBF's etc. It's where the quality is. Sure, grab a highly rated ruck/forward, but don't just grab KPF's for the sake of it, they have to be game breakers, players that you can build a premiership team around.

No, we don't.

We can buy them.
Yeah right

Our first four picks best available 1,6,10,11 and then twenties picks we need needs. Nothing to do with top of the list. It's about balance and we a short of talls and the time they take to develop.

**** Smillie is a tantalising prospect. Could be anything. I like that he seems to have a bit of campaigner in him too.

Bugger pick 2. Just take Lalor FOS and Smillie.

Welcome Finn and Josh.

Welcome Finn and Josh.

let it go GIF

Tex walker is also about 1 metre wide which helps on the lead
I reckon Walker is a bit like Smillie except Walker better longer kick and and a better mark and Smillie better contested ground ball.

If we got Smillie I reckon I would switch him between half forward and half back and see how he goes in the ruck as a mid.

Maybe CHB is Smillie's more natural position but it would depend on who he was matched up with

Smillie might be not quick but he is taller and a better mover than Tex. Actually if anything Smillie would be a centre in terms of position. I would not call Smillie a ruck rover or rover in the true sense of the word

If we got Smillie I do not think we should ask him to go contest to contest, rather as a pivot/centre player with the back and forward arcs

Smillie is more key position and that position is centre. So I do not think Smillie is your Cripps ruck type, he is more a centre roaming the arcs, I would have others following the ball in terms of structure/set-up, initially, see what develops organically after including further development

Bauer's height is 192cm
Lefau's height is 195cm
Balta's height is 194cm

Don't get me wrong, 2 cm might be a lot to some people especially when it comes to the nether regions but you can't say Bauer isn't a key position player because he is 2cm shorter than one of our key defenders.
Bauer is the same height and weight as Broad 192cm & 86-88kg. He is a cm shorter and up to 6kg lighter than McIntosh, are you going to suggest they're KPP as well? Lefau is 195cm & around 95kg, Balta is 194cm & around 100kg, Gray & Blight are 195 & 196cm respectively and around 92-94kg each.
But that is exactly what you're doing!

You've dismissed trading and FA out of hand by saying.....
"There is no guarantee that we'll land a free agent or trade for a ready made option over the next few years"
Not sure how you reach that conclusion based on what I said, because what I'm actually suggesting is that instead of putting all our eggs in the trade & free agency basket we give ourselves the best chance of unearthing our next genuine number 1 KPF by hitting the draft now, as we've got the draft hand to do so and not hurt our rebuild in any way.
You're solution to that is to throw more darts in this draft with the hope that one sticks.

I think everyone knows that we need outside run and class, but by taking up to 4 KPP's you eliminate the possibilities of drafting those types. Armstrong, Shanahan, Trainor and Dodson for example don't meet those needs and by taking them we miss out on Lindsay, Berry, Hotton and Oliver who are exactly the type of players that we should be targeting.
My solution is to target 1-2 KPFs and a genuine ruck with our picks between 20-24. With 1, 6, 10 & 11 we target the best possible midfield talent, which should mean 4 of Lalor FOS Smith Smillie Reid Langford Lindsay Allan Draper are picked up. Then with picks 18-24 we target the best available KPPs/Ruck on the board and start to rebuild that area of the list as well, having already addressed the midfield unit.
Yes, we are weak as far as a top line KPF is concerned and I would say that our rucks are worse, by all means bring in a quality young ruck/forward that the young team can build with.

Do not bring in a multitude of KPP's who are notoriously hard to find in the draft where the failure rate is much, much higher.

Pick them up through trading and Free Agency where you know what you are getting
I really don't get the reluctance to bring in quality 2 young KPP & a genuine Ruck in a draft where we hold 1/3 of the first 24 live picks. Different if we just had the 2 or 3 picks in the draft, but we can actually address weaknesses across the board with our picks and not hurt our rebuild in any way, we actually enhance the rebuild and can then use the next couple of drafts to start targeting specific areas of need.

Not only that but it actually opens up our ability to go and be aggressive in free agency and trading, because we will be able to cough up a top pick to get it done, knowing that we've already got
Tex Walker is 192cm, don't think that anyone would rate him as a general forward.

IIRC, Bauer got the better of Sicily.

Anyway, it's just _RT_ 's way of deflecting, he's not able to admit that he got something wrong.
Walker is 100-105kg, Bauer is 86-90kg big difference in size and strength as well as the ability to contest against big bodied defenders.

Better kicking action than Travaglia, I would say Allan blazes away but not a bad kick. Lindsay brilliant disposal, who would you rather at 11?
Lindsay then Allan for mine, or a slider. Berry & Hotton in consideration.
Lindsay has real impact and sets up scoring with his kicking, is athletic and can get his own ball.
Allan is power, speed with defensive aggression. Agree about his kicking, it has penetration, but can butcher it.

How athletic are the best key forwards these days? Bauer has got little chance of becoming a successful main forward target at AFL level. We would be rapt if he became a decent 3rd tall.
2nd or 3rd tall is perfect, make those zoning, intercepting defenders accountable.

I'm contrarian to nearly everyone on this board where I think that our forward line could be one of the most dynamic in the comp. We're just missing a couple of pieces to the jigsaw.

Bauer and LeFau are difficult matchups for 2nd and 3rd tall defenders. Add Lynch to take the best defender and we can split any defence wide open, doesn't have to be Lynch, could be Fawcett or Gray, point being that they'll have to be manned up.

Mansell showed some promise this year with 21 goals and MRJ should get better, Seth Campbell acquitted himself quite well. Judson Clarke adds polish and poise as a High HF/Wing. Taranto is threat when resting forward.

Drafting 4-5 players that can be a threat forward of centre will round out what we already have and form one of, if not the most potent forward lines in the comp. Lalor, Berry, Hotton, Smillie and a bullocking ruck/forward would be perfect.

Yeah definitely agree, I don’t reckon he’s a great kick but you can see the potential there vs a bloke like Timmy T who’s mechanics are just a bit busted.

Lindsay is our greatest need, need that outside weapon

At pick 6 I think we should take (in order of preference depending who is there)

Armstrong
Jagga Smith
Smilie

If Armstrong is gone, take Smith/Smilie and pick Shanahan at 10 and then Travalia at 11.

If we take Armstrong at 6, pick best available mid at 10 and Travaglia at 11.
Reckon we go mid at 6 so we lock in 2x of that top group of mids.

At pick 10, you're betting Saints/Dees don't go for a key forward but if they do, only Armstrong likely selected and we take Shanahan/Whitlock at 10.
