I reckon Walker is a bit like Smillie except Walker better longer kick and and a better mark and Smillie better contested ground ball.

If we got Smillie I reckon I would switch him between half forward and half back and see how he goes in the ruck as a mid.

Maybe CHB is Smillie's more natural position but it would depend on who he was matched up with
Smillie has played in defence and been very effective. Not sure about true CHB. Some say he can't mark overhead which is not true, but he's not a natural contested mark and tends not to go up in a pack.

yeah, naturally, does not know or confident using his body and height to mark like a Tauru, even though he is taller than Tauru. Smillie has a lot of weight in his arse like a Leigh Mathews but does not have the groundball of a Leigh etc.. and other mids due to his height. Smillie's body shape is different to Tauru and partly why Tauru is naturally more of a aerialist

So Smillie is not a interceptor marker, as I see it. He could be a forward marking option though especially on the lead and in space and this is where if he is around centre and up the ground he can find more space and allow our wings to move around up and back

So if we were coming out of the backline, apart from guys in space, we could kick it to the CHB, the ruck or Smillie in a central position depending on how good and long our kickers where, or he might get a handball after a slingshot play

Is there any footage of him taking a contested over head mark? I havent seen it myself and at his size, its bloody damming if you ask me.

Welcome Sam, Finn and Josh.

Fixed it for you

I’ve seen him take 1 on 1 contested marks. But no pack marks like Lalor, FOS and Langford.

Wonder if we draft Christian Moraes with pick 24, outside midfielder, elite runner, hit the scoreboard quite a bit as well in the coates talent league. Feel like he would compliment a tandem of Lalor and Smilie, as would Joe Berry at pick 11. We need some transition runners to cover them a little bit

Feel like Angus clarke is a good option as well, has more speed than Jaques and Oliver. As has been mentioned lids is his manager and hartley and blair have a pretty good relationship

Got a good shoe on him this kid.
If we could somehow hold onto pick 6 it would be nice but I still take FOS over him every time.
I have some connections to him. His coaches think he is a rare talent. He had a few injury issues plus a head knock and illness during the champs. Didn't show his best when most on show, but he's a gun and a great kid. Would love him in Y&B.
Yes, there's still a few ahead of him, FOS being one!

No one did, campaigner.
They did, it was just in private campaigner.

Smillie might be not quick but he is taller and a better mover than Tex. Actually if anything Smillie would be a centre in terms of position. I would not call Smillie a ruck rover or rover in the true sense of the word

If we got Smillie I do not think we should ask him to go contest to contest, rather as a pivot/centre player with the back and forward arcs

Smillie is more key position and that position is centre. So I do not think Smillie is your Cripps ruck type, he is more a centre roaming the arcs, I would have others following the ball in terms of structure/set-up, initially, see what develops organically after including further development
I think I'd just play him in his natural position. Midfield.

The draft should be held 1 week after the trade period. All it is is the AFL trying to spread the period out to encroach on other sports.
Not correct. Most draftees are in the middle of school exams.

Smillie is a structural player to me but not FF for sure(at least in a multi dimensional way) and probably not CHF. He is certainly not a pack forward target anyway, at the moment. I would not try and change his body either too much rather work with what he has and can do

It just means a team getting Smillie needs to let him develop, understand how it can work and build the right synergies and complimentary types to create the most effective team with him in it.

Not every team can have Smillie in it and be effective, It depends on who your rucks, rovers, wingers and backs are and even the forward setup.

Smillie can work, the coaches just need to appreciate how to play to his strengths a bit like Scott with Cameron at Geelong even though Cameron has different strengths and would be played differently

Yze said he wanted more marking in transition and theoretically Smillie should allow that, it probably means if he was at RFC we could have more mobile key posts, CHB and CHF

If we got Lalor and Smillie I would shift Lalor between forward and ruck and leave Smillie to control the centre area and arcs

The other thing that has not been mentioned is the length of Smillie's kicking as to how effective he can or cannot be?

Smillie could drift to half forward, take a mark in space and kick a goal if he has the length theoretically apart from simply dishing it off
