Less than a week to go. This week has seen coaches and others go back to interview their preferred candidates, formalising the scenario. This of course comes with leaks forming through players, players family and friends and player managers.

Like Cal said yesterday some names are big focus for us. Lalor, O’Sullivan, Smilie, Whitlock, Bo Allan. There’s been a ton of work lately on all these guys. I’d have these guys as favourites for our first picks. I’m still not sure what we do at Pick one. Media is all over Lalor but I’ve heard strong word on FOS being the one. So we will see.

I know West Coast are thinking both Bo Allan and Jack Whitlock are not gonna be at their first pick so I expect Jobe Shanahan to come into play for them if all falls as expected.

Still a lot of water to go under the bridge. But some names are now coming out as more favoured for certain teams. A lot more will come over the weekend then Cal’s mock will be as close to what happens as possible.

All I know is it’s an exciting time to be a Tiger. 🐯
Bo Allan is the concern his foot skills. Swap him with Murphy Reid or Lindsay and it looks better.

Picks 1 & 2 may have the best chance of being the best players from the draft but rarely does it pan out that way and that's my point. We shouldn't trade up for pick 2 and give away another top 20 pick in the process. Take our picks as they stand and add as much talent as possible across the board so we fill as many holes as possible.
How many sides outside the 2 plastics have had 6-7 other sections too fall back on?
None/Zilch/Zero/Freo.
We can afford too do it and should.

You'd be right if all our current KPP's had ability or were of the same age... but they're not. Our talls are filth if we're planning for our next flag. Other than Balta and Tigger (who, in all likelihood wont be there to see any fruits of our next success)... you'd see a better group of talls in the ammos.
Well we don't quite know that as yet. The chances are longer but we have a pretty good record of finding players left of centre. We have a lot of players we have seen little to nothing of. Is one of them going to be our next Jack or Lynch, no, but you don't always need that to win a flag, one or two could turn into handy players. Besides we are not going to flag for a minimum 3 year and that's optomistic, plenty can happen in 3 years.

Pick #23:

Harrison Oliver

State: Victoria Metro
State League Club: Sandringham Dragons
Community Club: St Bedes/Mentone
Date of Birth: 15/06/2006
Height: 181cm

A composed and hard running medium defender who helped set the play up for Victoria Metro with his great decision making and precise left-foot kicking. He averaged 16.2 disposals at 83 per cent efficiency and 3.2 tackles across four matches at the National Championships, with his speed also a weapon in breaking the lines. Was rewarded with All Australian honours and capped a great year with a premiership win for the Sandringham Dragons, where he was also selected in the Coates Talent League Team of the Year.
Weapon: Speed and dynamic left-foot kicking
AFL player comparison: Josh Kelly

“One of the most well regarded ball users in the draft, boasting a wand-like left foot and the ticker to take gutsy overhead marks.”

Everyone keeps linking us to him. As long as it's not before pick 23, we have far greater needs.
After quality mids which we are assured of, I would think a ruckman is our greatest need. Besides Nank, we have nothing, zip. Ryan's chances of making it are getting slimmer every year and Nank has two years left and gets injured. A developing quality ruck is going to be far more needed than backs (Gibcus/Balta) and even forwards (Lynch, Lefau, Fawcett, Bauer, Gray). Nank goes down season over.

Nah Samson will be adequate at worst IMO. Plus OHB made huge strides and Kozi could compete well enough to get us out of trouble IMO.

No need to burn a 1st round pick on a dedicated ruck at this stage.

Watched the video of the young boys back at training Adem spoke quite well so maybe this is his comfort zone

but what I did hear him say that the young boys are the future and that there will be 8 new players sitting in the rows with them.

Sounds like Blair may not be trading too many picks in this 'super draft' especially since most commentators are saying 2025 draft haul is a little bit of meh!

Now if his verbal skills have improved let us hope it translates into the coaches box.

.
Don't read too much into the 8 new players comment.
Could just mean 8 new players to fill the list. So could be one or two from the rookie draft or SSP period.

Agree. And a ruck who is a lso an AFL class mid fits very well to me. If he can actually win taps to advantage then all the better. important structurally - after we have picked up he guys we need for a well rounded squad.

We will never have the luxury of getting the best junior ruck in the country again as we have 8 picks in that first round. It's hardly burning when you have so many picks, normally with say 2, I would agree with you.

Sampson Ryan does not dominate the VFL and would be worn down in 6 weeks if Nank went out for any length of time. Big rucks physically smash him. OHB is miles off although he did make good strides. He is a bit like Ryan, outmuscled. His legs are like sticks compared to most rucks, needs a massive off season in the gym.

9 of his 11 goals came against coburg and bullants (duds) but he still kicked 2.3 against the suns and it's not like essendon's vfl team was dominant so it's still a great showing
Regardless of the oppo, still a kid against men at VFL level. Super impressive IMO

Nah ruck would be last on my list to be using a first rounder. Especially when we have so many mid/key fwd holes. They take so long to develop.

You can easily buy a serviceable ruck later when we are contending. So many available when they hit their peak around 25.

Other than Gawn, there is no ruck out there worth a first rounder.

What do you mean? Dodson is the best junior ruck and isn't going to go in the 1st round.

Also the best junior ruck rarely ends up even close to the best senior ruck. Xerri was pick 70 odd.

Samson has dominant periods in VFL games. He will get there IMO. Gawn has skinny legs too...

Yeah rucks are a total crapshoot to draft

I remember when port drafted Sam Hays in 2017 the best ruck in that pool and he literally just got replaced by Soldo and Sweet who were both recycled rookie picks by their original club

Even CCJ was rated as a really good ruck when he drafted but has shown **** all in the role

Unless they are genuinely something special like Luke Jackson, who isn’t even a traditional ruck no point wasting the pick

Just play the late pick rookie game and try and play ruck roulette from another club if we absolutely need one

People are making up knocks on him.
He’s not aggressive in a Lalor way, but he is very physical in a contest. His tackles stick, he stands up when being tackled and using strength usually gets a good disposal away. Doesn’t look urgent sometimes but has poise, with good side steps, back steps and lateral movement, and decision making is excellent. As you say clean hands and polished disposal, kicks goals regularly. Disposal counts when fit high 20s low 30s, that have impact. Had some injury and illness issues around the nationals.

In this clip he takes a couple of contested marks using his size to advantage. Not pack marks as I’ve commented earlier, but marking in general is sound. Athleticism overall is very good.
Some prefer what they see in others, that’s fine, but for me @6 yes, @10 would be a steal.

What a sheet kick he is...hard ball gets are foreign for his big size...not worth an early pick at all...
