Not replacing Grundy with even a VFL type player who could just compete is a big stuff up. No doubt Gawn would have rested properly if we had someone. Although he is probably gonna try play no matter what.

This is not what the last 3 years would suggest though.

It’s to late now but why didn’t we try get Loyd Meek in the Jackson trade and last year we should have chased Chol he would have been a better 2nd ruck/foward option than petty and roo. So I guess we will chase some other donkey that won’t get a game and give schache a 2 year extension.
Ask Tim Lamb mate. The Meek one was an obvious one. Chol maybe as well, but hearing about his lack of competitiveness and poor training methods might have scared us off. Hawks have nailed it with those two. Turned them into important players. Man they are fun to watch. Can't believe I'm saying a team with Ginni and The Wizard are an enjoyment to watch, but they are irresistible atm.

Hawthorn's spine consists of Sam Frost, Jack Scrimshaw, Calsher Dear and Mabior Chol with Meek as ruck. Yeah, it's all about needing that million dollar key forward hey! Sam Mitchell can clearly coach. Goody can't beat half decent teams with a 6x AA ruckman and Steve May and Jake Lever as the defensive spine. The way Hawthorn move the ball is electric and attacking. They have fantastic ball users which going forward simply has to be a priority for this football club. Probably a big part of the reason why Houston is on our radar. I hope the Hawks do some damage from here on in.

Re Chol, I think there’s definitely questions about his competitiveness. Especially when the chips are down. Also don’t think he offers a heap in the ruck. Similar HTA rate to JVR. And not near as much of a competitor as JVR in general.

All things being equal, no one wants to do the 1 hour drive to Casey Fields a couple of times per week if they have other options on the table.

This whole notion that every single player on our list needs to be a competitor is actually ridiculous.

Chols lack of competitiveness has him currently sitting on 29 goals for the year even after he's missed 2 games this year. On that form alone he would be sitting 2nd behind another another non competitor in Bayley Fritsch.

Forget competitiveness, the guy clearly has talent and sometimes talent can easily override that. We missed an opportunity unfortunately.

Much better forward than Disco, that was a huge blunder

Yeah that’s fair. It’s just the knock on him. Typical whipping boy type especially if he was at the dees and we were losing. No doubt would be in our team.

Yeah - players who had no other options on the table.

Billings. Hunter. Schache. McAdam.

Should I go on?

And the ones that had other options (Lever, Langdon, Preuss) got paid well in excess of their value on the open market.
So there were players who chose Melbourne. Add Steven May to that list.

Nothing annoys me more than people swallowing Goodwin propaganda. You need a mix of guys who bring different things to the table. We should absolutely be going after Peter Wright if hes fallen out of favour at Essendon, but probably not enough of a competitor for Melbourne. 🧠

I reckon there is something to be said for key forwards and lacking mongrel. Schache was dominant as a junior. So was Jack Watts. They just lack the killer instinct. King boys could be headed that way too. Particularly Max. Chol plays a very laconic game and probably seems to lack the competitiveness due to that also. Don’t mind Peter Wright. Would be happy if we could get him. Has had a few fitness issues this year. So assume Essendon aren’t letting him go.

You're acting like Chol just sits in the goalsquare to wrestle. That's not what he does, Chols a second tall who uses athleticism who cost a 3rd rounder no one's saying give up pick 8 for him

How am I acting like that? He’d lose those battles. It’s not his go. Was a bargain for that price and not saying I wouldn’t want him. Was just stating what been said about him. And my observation.

Bailey Fritsch isn't a physical player either so we shouldn't have taken him either?

I prefer physical key forwards but the game is 90% delivery and setup these days there's no physical key forwards actually left.

Funny enough Jack Watts would slot in beautiful into our forward mix.

I still hold some hope for McAdam. More next year if he can get his body right over the pre season. Has talent but always injured. Billings I had some hope for but don’t think I want to see him in the side again. I think only one more year on his contract.
McAdam had an interrupted preseason. Never really got going. Decent preseason and we'll see if he's going to be a bust or not. Was expecting more from him.
