List Mgmt. 2024 Draft & Trade Hypotheticals

I think we should enquire about Leek Aleer. I've been so impressed by him this year and he did a great job on Amartey (who also played well). GWS have Himmelberg, Buckley and Taylor as their first choice tall defenders whereas we are only playing 2 true tall defenders in Melican and McCartin.
No harm in asking, but it is hard to see GWS letting him go under contract.

Direct swap for Warner? The only trade that won’t have me crying that we lost Chad.

Very much doubt Reid would want to go to Sydney if he wanted to leave WC,would think he would look at a Melbourne based club.BUT agree if Warner wants to return to WA a swap with Reid I agree with.If Warner did leave most likely his brother might go back as well.

Ralph speculating on 28 OOC players (even though most are not OOC...) so grain of salt aplenty

17. LUKE PARKER

Has one more year on a lucrative deal and would be conflicted: Why leave a club where he might win another flag? But he was continually overlooked at selection before his lengthy suspension and it will only be harder to get into this team as the kids emerge. A club like the Kangaroos might offer a three-year deal at excellent money as a perfect retirement fund that also allows him to mentor the kids. Tough decision ahead. It might be easier if a St Kilda, Melbourne or Adelaide who are a little closer to finals contention come hunting with a deal.

Continually overlooked before his suspension - for what all of 3 weeks, coming off a significant injury that screwed up his preparation for the season. Why didn't I become a journo - you really do just make crap up these days haha.

As for St Kilda being close to finals contention - ah ha ha ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha.

For the draft watchers

I think i posed this a couple of weeks ago but say hypothetically we loose noone in the top 25 or so at the club in the offseason (This includes Warner x2, Sheldrick, McDonald etc). What position would you be drafting for? My initial thought is finally given Hayward an understudy (that can actually compete with him slightly for his spot) because he hasn't had one since what Thurlow in 2020? Also thought that given Fox is 31 we could look at another medium defender (yes Mills i expect to play there for his career now) but we probably need a more lockdown role incase they also need to cover Cunningham

We could use more specialist small depth at either end. No one has consistently put pressure on Wicks or Papley up front nor been able to hold down their place in the backline like a Cunningham.
Well Vickery was suppose to be Cunninghams replacement and also Campbell was suppose to have cemented himself in the best 22 but neither of those things have eventuated so its back to the drawing board.

A point of difference medium forward, hard leading or stand on heads type.

If there is such a thing anymore, a small defender would be good.

Outside of that it's a swingman or tall winger.

Honestly speaking, we don't need much. It's the first time in years/ever where I think the club has a free hit. Best available with good footskills works for me.

I think this is why we picked Hanily in the MSD and why we got Cleary playing as a forward

Down back the next best thing I can think is Campbell but I wouldn't be shocked to see Mitchell start to move down back.

Roberts has also proven to be very strong in defence

Yeah I would like to see Campbell train with Cunningham all preseason to learn his to read the game, body position, where to stand for forward stoppage, how to legally tie up a player and keep them off the ball, pressure and perceived pressure on the man. Get another string to his bow so that he could play at either end because those skills are easily transferred to pressure small forward.

I also know many will disagree but I think Mills short term future will mostly be in defence. He'll play a lot of minutes on the wing and middle but think we'll see him in defence 50% of the time

Good question probably look at best available at where we'd be picking, but I would like us to target a genuine small defender, think that's the one role we can get exposed if we have an injury or two.

Very much like the look of Roberts so far.

I think most small defenders come through the system as midfielders, so I agree with best available.

If you are a small, negating defender in the Coates League you simply don't get noticed, and they are all coached to put their skills on show anyway (no tagging in the mids, etc). It is for this reason that recruiters notice mids with their associated attributes, as well as tall forwards and backs, and small, negating defenders usually don't get a look in.

100% mate, look we are probably picking at 20 ish and it's in general a mid heavy draft, many may hate it but can see them going a mid if Sheldrick leaves (likely). We have got the forward backup to Hayward in the MSD (Hanily)

If Hanily is being prepped to play the medium tall forward role then i must have gotten his height and attributes wrong. Hanily was brought in under my understanding to play the small forward pressure role and put "some" pressure on Wicks and be a back up incase he goes down. We haven't had a marking non-tall forward at the Swans other than Hayward for like 4 years now and we need to get one imo as Hanily who is listed as 179cm is not that.

Plays taller than he is, probably a mix between the two he is. Think we are okay for mediums, already have mids we can't fit in we don't need a specialised Half forward who wouldn't play. Probably look at a utility at where we are picking, maybe trade for a premiership piece, have options.
