Exactly this i think Campbell will be our beau mccreery or Bedford (when he was a forward) type of small forward that averages 5-6 tackles a game and provides that pressure. He would also be an asset because his ball use is better than most forwards especially in open space
Campbell is actually quite a solid unit. Bereft of any other highlights on the weekend, I watched him stride down the wing late on, towards me on the fence just outside F50, and the light must have hit him just right, because I was ready to proclaim him our HF messiah.

I have McLean in the side due to him foiling Grundy in the ruck so well given his body type. Think Amartey sort of chokes McDonald a bit tbh. But could see those that would want Amartey over McDonald given they play a similar style
Interesting comments yesterday from Cornes saying we should have traded McDonald last year when we could have gotten a haul given it was far from certain if he was going to amount to much. Tend to agree. I guess the club is banking on the fact he's settled in, likes his team mates and is buying into the club culture. A taller Florent. While there is obviously plenty to say for that approach (our reaching finals record is incredible), seems it may fall just short at the very pointy end for us.

McLean is hard to put out of the side due to doing that job,but he's often not much of a substitute ruck IMO either. His lack of mobility on top of that....anyways unless we are going to try Ladhams in that role, (which I dont mind but know is a small minority position) I guess he'll be there next season. Mclean might be real good in another coach's system though. Cameron was.

Give him 2 more FULL seasons. He's tracking exactly how Hawkins was.

Logan plays as the centre key forward and I’d probably go McLean just over Amartey as the second tall. Not fussed on the second one if you can tell me Amarteynis better in the ruck I’d be fine with that.

Three smalls in Cleary, Paps and Campbell up forward. Cleary pushing up to the HF.
How about a bloke called Isaac Heeney into the forward line?
Sheldrick into the midfield.

Do we have these guys on the list. I'd love to try Braedan Campbell in that role over a period of time. He has all the attributes. If not him Clearly has all the attributes too. They aren't Kozzie Pickett quality in terms of x factor but reckon they could both be geniune quality small forwards.
A forward line with Amatey or Mclean, Logan, Hayward, Papley, Cleary and Braedan?
Taylor would have been perfect if he didn’t fall through

Edit: Elijah Taylor - not the other Taylors it could have been

How about no.

Sheldrick in and under. Heeney goes to the second possession it actually suits him more

I know what you mean, but you can thank Norf for his and Heeney's big contracts. I think we made the right call in the circumstances.

I think we also got out of jail with Parker's contract. He was the one who put us over the barrel and got an extra year and extra $ and now it looks like we may be able to use those very factors to get something back from Norf.
This is why I never feel too sorry for Parker. He squeezed every ounce of value from Sydney, and would let things drag out to achieve this outcome.

That’s his right, but then I don’t think he has grounds to complain if Sydney gets transactional.

I like this set of combinations for mids:

Defensive role: Rowie / Mills

Extractor role: Mills / Sheldrick / Adams (injury cover)

Receiver role: Heeney / rotating player (eg. JMac, Papley, Cleary, etc)

I like it a lot, but Longmire values versitility rather than players who are more specialised. Better to be okay at a lot of jobs than amazing at one.

If you're looking at centre clearance, 2.5 and above are regarded as elite.
Cripps (3.3), Daicos (3), LDU (3), Serong (3), Bont (2.9), Libba (2.9), Neale (2.9), Rowell (2.9), Shiel (2.9), Crouch (2.6), Danger (2.6), JHF (2.5), PaddleBum (2.5), Hayden Young (2.5).
That's the list of players that hit that mark this season.

2023 Season:
Parish (3.6), Bont (3.3), Neale (3.3), Serong (3.2), Laird (3.1), Libba (3), Worpel (3), Crouch (2.9), Danger (2.9), Noah Anderson (2.7), De Goey (2.7), Newcombe (2.7), Oliver (2.7), Rowell (2.7), Brodie (2.6), Cripps (2.6), Green (2.6), Viney (2.5).
Luke Parker was at 2.4.

I don't see a realistic replacement. So need development from within.

How about a bloke called Isaac Heeney into the forward line?
Sheldrick into the midfield.
I think Heeney stays in the mids, he was just so good, but needs to be managed better, and that includes a bit more time up forward.

If you look at centre bounces, admittedly a few missed games here and there, our CBA % was as follows:

Heeney 74%
Rowy 71%
Warner 64%
Gulden 36%
Adams/Parker 25-30% usually*

Higher % for Adams/Parker usually occurred when one of the others were out.

There were a few bit parts from Papley, Mills and others, this would likely continue.

But to have less of Warner in the mids, as well as Heeney (management and fwd threat), could do the following or similar (opposition dependant).

75% Rowy
60% Mills
50% Heeney
40% Sheldrick
20% each - Gulden and Warner (late qtr/game)

Small shortfall can be made up with Jordon, Cleary, Campbell, Jmac who might be at a couple of CBs per game when playing.

Would also draft one, maybe a mature ager, as mentioned before there's a few around that fell through the cracks around/since Covid. Sam.Frost (former Giants academy) and Kobe Ryan, West Adelaide etc.

I feel like Horse & co have moved on from Mills in the midfield for some reason, but I also think surely Horse is fed up of not having someone who can do a shutdown job on an inside mid, and Mills has shown he can do that. Jordon did his best this year but is better suited to shutting down flankers and outside players, as it was too easy for his inside mid opponents to slip his tag in the contest.

I would not draft a small forward with our early picks. This draft seems to have depth in the talls and mids. So would prefer to focus on those areas.

I think we can get by using Papley with a combination of Wicks, Campbell, Cleary, Hanily, Corey Warner and possibly Konstanty. If we drafted a small forward, I am not sure he would get opportunities if we are not using the ones we have.

It's been a longstanding thought process of mine (since sometime late Saturday afternoon), that the following is our best shot at a flag next year... not likely still.

  • Mills and Sheldrick to mids
  • Heeney still mids mostly, but don't wear him out
  • Warner to half forward
  • Fox back (where Mills would have been)
  • Drop one of McLean/Amartey
  • As agreed, Campbell, Cleary etc up fwd

Horse can get stuffed if he thinks we're winning one without these changes.

The more I think about it, neither of them are consistent/good enough to be the focal point/spear head of a premiership team

Warner in for the receiver role split with Warner.

I don't hate any of those at all.
