Briztoon mentioned above that there's quite a few.
Both Sydney and GWS have academy kids who might be second round talent. Gold Coast have 4 kids who might be first and second round talent.

I think the Bulldogs potentially have 2 or 3 father son kids.

The biggest “problem”, looking at projections for next year, is the sheer depth of what’s perceived as second round talent.

So that could see teams just not bidding on kids, like what happened with Davey jr. last night.

But wait until the 2024 draft. It’s possible that draft is one quarter father son or academy kids.

It's a funny thing the AFL Draft.

My 16 year old daughter, a keen footy follower who loves the Magpies (Sherwood and Collingwood) rang me from her holiday so excited about Fletcher getting drafted.

The conversation continued, then she realised it was Jaspa Fletcher and not Will Fletcher.

Confused, she asked me "oh is Jaspa better than Will?"

I replied that he wasn't.

"So why does Jaspa get drafted and not Will?"

Well cause he is 18 and Will is 21 I reply.

"21 is hardly old Dad, surely a team trying to win the Premiership just takes the best players?"

I then began to try and explain it more and went down the path that many people probably think when Jaspa is 21, he will be better than Will is now and its an investment in the future.

It fell on deaf ears and she just couldn't understand the concept.

She then moved to Riley Greene, who is super popular in our house. Great guy, great family, incredibly dedicated to his footy and a great clubman. Mentors my sonand just a ripping human being.

"Will RG get picked up?" She asks.

Really hope so! I reply, nobody is more deserving of an opportunity.

"Is he better than Jaspa?"

Yes he is mate, but he's 21.

"For God's sake dad, 21 is hardly ancient - this is ridiculous!"

Certainly got me thinking. Much harder to get picked up after turning 19 than it should be, especially given some males don't fully mature physically until well past 20.

Note: absolutely thrilled for Jaspa, and he is very deserving of his selection and is a quality young man. This is not meant to question his selection at all. This innocent convo just sparked some thoughts from me though and thought this is as good a place to share as any given the conversation about some of these players.

Not sure I agree Riley Greene is better than Jaspa, but certainly the Will Fletcher conversation is an interesting one.

Pretty sure he is 22, not 21. But yes, in terms of a ready made midfielder - he is a significantly superior player right now and a classic case of a guy that got burnt by the academy process and ended up playing Lions Reserves footy at 16 before he was ready, so probably had a line put through him way too early based on how he went at 16 (instead of how he was going when he got to 18/19 and was 15kg heavier)

We've definitely seen it changing in recent years, especially the last five or so, but you really need to be dominating the seconds to get that look in.

How would you rate/compare Ryan Gilder to Riley Green?

When RG was 17 and still had 2 years of Colts eligibility, he ran 4th in our QAFL Senior Best & Fairest. We couldn't convince academies to look at him.

Then when both Q clubs realised he was pretty good, they had 2 years of covid interruptions when there was minimal opportunity to put a strong foot forward in the 2nds.

This year, they VFL list him. He dominates pre-season stuff, but they mismanage an injury and he misses 10+ weeks. Comes back late in the year and has a seriously strong finals campaign.

I love Jaspa, but at 17 he was just holding onto a spot in QAFL Footy. RG was one of the best players in the comp at the same age.

How would you rate/compare Ryan Gilder to Riley Green?

Gilder is 16, Greene is 21.

Gilder would be 192cm or maybe more.

Greene is 187/188 or thereabouts.

Almost impossible to compare, Greene at 17 was desperate to progress and play the highest level possible and was excelling in QAFL senior Footy.

Gilder, for whatever reason at this stage has told me he just wants to play u17s and not even Colts in 2023, despite the fact that he could easily push into the Senior side on ability.

So while Gilder has every weapon at his disposal athletically and talent wise, the main difference is Greene has unmatched dedication to his footy and a desire to maximise every bit of talent he has.

Chalk and cheese in that regard.

Thank you for the insight in to both kids.

When I'm looking at possible decisions of the club in these situations, I'm looking at what we might have coming through in the future, as well as the decision the club is potentially making now between players.

One thing I would hate is for the club to rookie list a player, and then only give them one season on the list (or 6 months in regards to a mid season draftee).

In such scenarios, it looks like we're just signing a player for reserve depth, even though they get well payed for 12 or 6 months.

Looking at it from a pure list position, both Brain and Green play in positions that we have good depth in, though Brain probably has more versatility to play up forward and through the midfield.

On the flip side I think it’ll be much harder for Brain to breakthrough in his position with the depth we have. If Greene really is a great versatile defender that can take those hybrid forwards as well as the smaller forwards while also being a very good interceptor I think his path to the best 22 is much clearer and more attainable.

I gave that a fair bit of thought.

Greene is basically waiting in line for Starcevich's role. We currently have Madden as Starcevich's understudy. And Answerth as another small lock down defender type. There's a lot of depth amongst our small backs, with Daniel Rich the only likely retirement in the next 5 years.

Up forward, we have the potential for more list spots to open up over the next few seasons, with a few older players in our forward line; Zorko (33), McCarthy (29) and Cameron (28). Or players not coming on as we'd hoped; namely Cockatoo, maybe Blake Coleman.

And we have less depth outside our best 22 in the small/medium forward line. Currently we have Lohmann, Cockatoo, Blake Coleman and McDowell-White jr.

I’ll be honest I haven’t seen a lot of Greene outside of what I’ve read on here. I thought he was more of a Gardiner type, either way Brain it is.
