Will Levi be able to play some VFL games with us next year, similar to Will?

If so, wouldn't be out of the equation for Will to come back via the VFL next year for a game or two and play with his brother a year early.
Will had finished school, so did not have any private school footy commitments.

Levi will still be finishing year 12 next year, and splitting time between Sandringham and Brighton Grammar.

Not saying it won’t happen, just that it is unlikely.

I do expect Levi to train with the squad during preseason, and maybe spend a week with the team if footy commitments allow, as happened this year.

Pick 26 before all the shenanigans with bids should net us a pretty handy prospect or do we bundle it up with our first in 2024 and try and move up the draft board into the teens if possible.

Far (far, far, far) form draft knowledgeable re this year’s prospects, but I’m less enthused with most kids (KPP prospects) past the mid to late teens this year.

Why do the private schools hold so much power over these talented kids that they can stop them playing local or development squad footy? Is it just an old boys money thing?

The highly ranked kids are usually on a scholarship from the school, so that's where their loyalty lies.

the APS scxhool footy is of a seriously high standard too, so its not like they are being held back from playing a good level of footy.

I hope if Rich retires this year we put aside the 10 for the year for Levi. Obviously Will could take it as well but they both can’t have 10.

We currently hold pick 26. I wanted to share some thoughts on some draft prospects within that range I am interested in this year, noting that I definitely think KPP should be our priority and some of the smaller types I list below I would only consider if we can get a few more picks in the 20’s/30’s. Otherwise if we maintain our current draft hand with picks 26 and 45 I think we should look at best available KPP with both. My preference is to hold onto Dev and Kai but if we were to lose Robertson, Lohmann and Fullarton, hopefully Dom and Co. can get creative and package some picks up, perhaps with some future picks involved(Again noting that we have Levi and some promising Academy players coming through next year so cannot decimate next years hand too heavily plus we will need to see what comes of any changes to F/S & Academy bidding if any). I can’t see us receiving a top 30 pick in return for any of the above three names if they did request a trade but with some creativity there is no reason why we couldn’t package some later picks and trade up and end up with 2-3 picks in the early 20’s to mid 30’s picks range which would put us in the frame to draft three of the below-

Harry Demattia: Draft range is currently late first round/early second round and of the names I list below will likely be unattainable(just). I have watched him play for Dandenong and Vic Country this year and he is an extremely powerful athlete. His strength and burst from stoppages is ridiculously good and he is one of those players with next level tenacity and competitiveness at the contest. The potential for him to turn into a Newcombe type mid with even greater athleticism appeals to me greatly. He’d fit in well with the young crop of Wilmot, Will & Levi, and Jaspa. Only concern I have is his foot skills can be a bit hit and miss and if he struggles to develop his game further at the next level does he just end up like a Sam Berry or Luke Pedlar at the Crows who contribute through their sheer competitiveness and strength/power but can’t elevate themselves beyond much more than a good role player? The thing that caught my eye and put him on my potential wish list was a goal he kicked for Vic Country. Pure burst speed through a congested midfield and brilliant agility on show running at full tilt and weaving in and out of traffic, evading opponents before slotting a running goal from 50m out. It reminded me of our own Zac Bailey.

Will Green: 204cm ruckman. Watched him play for the Northern Knights and his ruck craft has come a long way. Would be a good option to develop on our list for a few years as O enters the twilight years of his career. He gets involved around the ground and can go forward and kick goals.

Tew Jiath: Just got approved as a Hawks NGA prospect a couple of weeks ago but they can only match bids after pick 40. His past 6 or so weeks have rocketed him up the draft boards from potential rookie to genuine second round credentials. I have seen some pundits mention he plays like his older brother CJ but less speed and dash but I don’t see that at all. I see the potential to become one of the best intercept defenders in the league. His game reminds me of Sicily. Same height and he reads the flight of the ball immaculately. I can easily see him developing into that Sicily/Lever type 3rd tall/KPD with the added benefit of also looking to take the game on and get the ball moving out of the back half. Not a skill you see lauded regularly but he is an elite handballer. In heavy traffic rebounding out of the 50 under heavy pressure he often delivers a beautiful handball to a teammate in open space allowing them to rebound from defensive 50. He’d be a good get to replace Lester/Gardiner in a few years. Would be a joy to watch him take intercept after intercept mark and then set up our rebound. His freakish vertical leap allows him to play taller than his height as well and obviously assists with his ability to take those intercept marks.

Lance Collard: Small forward out of WA in the Shai Bolton mould. If we lost Lohmann this off season and delisted Blake Coleman it would be good to draft Collard as a potential replacement for McCarthy/Charlie in a few years. He is 185cm and freakishly athletic and skilled. He kicked 5 goals yesterday in the Colts finals. Concern is his inconsistency(Not uncommon for small forwards at all levels I suppose), he can kick 5-6 one week and kick none the next but has all the tools to become the next genuine excitement machine in the AFL.

Zane Zakostelsky: Strong key defender from WA albeit on the smaller side at 194cm although some of the better key defenders in the league e.g. Steven May and Aliir Aliir are a similar height not to mention guys like Rampe and Sicily. Zakostelsky finished top 5 in testing for the 20m sprint highlighting his terrific close down speed which comes in handy as a key back. He is also strong and reliable under a high ball coming into the oppositions forward line. I could see him and Payne forming a very strong partnership for many years to come.

We are likely to have a decent number of retirements/de listings/fringe players requesting trades this year meaning we may need to take 4-5 picks in the National draft pending trade ins/FA. I wouldn’t want to be taking a swing at 4-5 players with picks 45+ so if we could move some picks around and end up with 2-3 in the 25-40 range I’d feel more comfortable.

One player I would like to take a gamble on if we do need to add a few draftees to our list with some later picks is mature ager Kai Owens. Assuming a few others on here have watched him play for Frankston in the VFL at times this year? If so I would love to know your thoughts as I believe he has so many AFL level traits. Plays a similar role to his younger brother at the Saints with his ability to play as an undersized key forward clunking marks and slotting goals whilst also playing through the midfield as a big bodied mid, winning the contested ball and laying plenty of tackles. His marking ability is handy when playing in the midfield as well as he can take contested marks on the wing as his team exits their backline. He is the favourite for the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell medal this year so he is likely to be drafted. When Ethan Phillips missed out last year wasn’t he the first recipient of that medal in over 10 years to not get drafted? Anyway I could see Kai Owens landing on an AFL list and playing Round 1 next year. I hope it is with us.

Great post, thanks for the contribution.

Davo-27 a draft pundit on the BF draft board is a big fan of Harry Demattia as well, he as him at 11 in his latest rankings.

With us already having development rucks Henry Smith and Kalin Lane you think we can absorb another one in Will Green?

If we draft Zane Zakostelsky I reallly hope we encourage him to grow a thick luxurious beard as he matures, just so we can call him ZZTop.

May not be a massive need no but depends how the club view Kalin Lane I suppose. Henry Smith from the outside looking in appears to be highly rated internally. It’d be good to add some height to our youth stocks I think and I rate Will Green higher than the KPP players rated 2nd round and beyond. Having Green, Smith, Fletcher and Ashcroft brothers developing together would hold our future ruck and midfield stocks in good stead I think.

...or to make it easier for you guys the club should only draft Anglo named players. Stick to Smiths and Browns or maybe he should anglicize his name to Zane Zak.

I was worried about missing our Z quota if Zorko retires.

Zorko out, Zane Zako in. works for me.

cue various posters Googling ZZTop to get the joke! :)

(over 50's registered clique members excused of course) ;)

There's a Nguyen in the Essendon NGA academy next year. Will be interesting to see what pronounciations we get from the commentators...
I know of at least 4 pronunciations. Can only hope we get more than that.

I defence of myself, I struggle to spell Smith and Brown correctly on a bad day. As seen in a recent post I couldn’t see the difference between second and third.

That female commentator calls everyone Charlie Curnow anyway.

Kind of ironic to have that criticism when you haven't thought to learn her name...
point noted and grin but Sproj isn't being paid to know her name as a basic part of his employment competency ...
