Primary list (36-38) - 33
Rookie list - category A (4-6) - 5
Rookie list - category B (0-2) - 1
Total (44) - 39 (5 available)

You're allowed a total of 42 primary list/cat A rookies + 2 cat B rookies; we currently have 4 of of the primary/cat A list spots available but we do need 3 more on our senior list.

Picks 31 and 42, and upgrading Michael to the primary list will fill those 3 spots and satisfy our 3 draft picks.

Leaves us with 2 primary/cat A rookies + 1 cat B rookie spots.

I'm confused with this every season, got me buggered why the AFL just doesn't go a flat 44 list spots and that's it.... if they want to give cap discounts just have a rule that the lowest paid 5 (random number) players only half their salary is counted towards the cap, and/or Irish/International recruits.

the rookie lists should just be folded into one and rebranded 'supplementary list' or something similar. say 38 main list spots and 6 supplementary list spots

the distinctions and special rules around who can be a rookie player and whether they can play or not have been eroded so massively i do not see any point in keeping the 'rookie list' branding

I think the way they might go is picks 31 and 42 plus Carter tonight, then see what available for their pick in the rookie draft.
If a nobody fits a need there, they could go back to the Delisted Free Agents. Still a bit of depth available there.

I think we will likely leave a list spot free for the mid season draft.

Would rather a key defender over a forward and an athletic type at that. Really not sure who that is though. Already have a couple of tall clunky forward types in reserve (Ryan and Smith). Still pretty light on for key backs with Lester likely to finish up soon and Joyce being more of a break glass option. Maybe the ZZ kid? Still needs plenty of development. I read Freo are keen.

A small forward would be great as well or perhaps a speedy outside mid?

Cooper Simpson, 3 in 1.

Do we really need a KPD? I see a talented KPF as a more urgent need.

Personally, I'd look at available talent and look for an inside mid. We are still small in the midfield and the Ashcrofts aren't big bodies.

Who knows. Cajole has been on record saying he values late birth, character and junior footy in making a final selection.

Prob means we learn towards Reid.

I'm definitely hoping for him, but not expecting it. He has every physical attribute you could want, except maybe a cm or two of height, which could still come, being a December birthday. Still, I trust the club's judgement.

Neither of them are urgent needs. We have both starters and reserves in both positions. So I'd rather have whoever the club thinks will be the better player. Besides, a lot of KPPs can be moved between.

Good 200cm players are the future.

Kane McCauliffe fits the bill. 187cm, 86kg.

SNAPSHOT: “An enforcer on the inside, Kane McAuliffe does plenty of grunt work through midfield and has a deceptively powerful athletic profile.”

Coming into his top-age year as one of South Australia’s most highly touted prospects, Kane McAuliffe proved an integral part of the state’s Under 18 side. The Port Augusta product came through the ranks at North Adelaide and progressed nicely since opting to board at Prince Alfred College in Adelaide, taking out the James Goss Medal for his school football dominance in 2021. He went on to have success with the Roosters and played in the losing 2022 SANFL Under 18 Grand Final, before being selected in the annual Under 17 Futures showcase.

This year, McAuliffe turned out six times in the junior grade and also broke through for a senior berth at Reserves level, playing seven games for North who fell short of finals in each competition. Some of his best form was observed at the Under 18 National Championships, where McAuliffe brought bull-like intensity to the midfield battle and set a consistent tone in what was otherwise a struggling side. He capped off his campaign by tearing up the National Draft Combine, achieving top five results in three of the five testing events to demonstrate his explosive streak.

Callum Twomey just said he's expecting the Lions to take Logan Morris with our first pick tonight.
