I think you're pretty good at it, once the main games start.

There's gotta be a way to assess without constantly looking at the scorebug.

Also, a lack of callers doesn't help me though, perhaps, if I'm assessing numbers instead of players, perhaps this presents an opportunity coupled with a lack of bias because I'd be basically going in blind if I haven't gotten the guernsey number allocations remembered.

I guess that's half the fun of it really.

Not having any preconceived ideas as to what/who I should be looking out for.

Are Harrison and Jackson Bridge brothers? Hope so, we seem to be busy collecting siblings suddenly. Berry×2, Ashcroft×2, Rayner-Dunkley-Lohmann x2 (brothers are/were in VFL) etc

Really like the look of our academy prospects this year. By no means the finished articles but they all offer a bit of what we lack or seem good ready to go depth options if needed.

The main attribute I love from what I have seen is that Marshall and Gilder in particular have great work rate and physical attributes for the modern game. Marshall has shown he can play an outside role too, Gilder can lock down a medium and small whilst having the attributes to hurt a team on rebound.

For next year, Annable looks a very good contested player.

The one area they need a bit more polish would be their disposal.

Hopefully we can get all of them because I can definitely see clubs forcing our hand and bidding on Marshall in the first round, Gilder may get a bid mid draft too just because he as a lot of scope for improvement and offers flexibility for his size.

think you will see a 2008 (2026 draft) name jump out of the ground at the upcoming national carnival - Hamish McPherson. He is a serious talent, and has the swagger (not arrogance) to match. The kid can really play.

Another one to take note of is a kid called Caelan Murray, plays a bit like Dylan Patterson. He is very classy and has very draftable attributes.

Ironically, both Levi and Thomson will be missing for the Lions team at the National Carnival, which is bemusing to say the least.

Despite missing Allies selection, from what I have heard around the recruitment circles - the one the Lions will need to match a bid on will be Tom Gillet. (after Ashcroft and Marshall of course). If it came in the 2nd or 3rd round, I can't see them matching it either.

Gilder will get interest from Victorian clubs, but reckon Lions might have a win there and be able to take him as a Cat B. Probably hasn't quie done enough to get bid on, though Allies still have one game to go and he was great in their 2nd game..

Didn't Harrison Bridge get left out of some squad or another recently? Or was that Jack Harrison? Possible risk that leaving the older brother out of something might annoy a family enough for the younger brother to refuse.

Bridge missed Allies selection, but is a bottom ager (and a young one at that).

Jack Harrison wasn't selected in final lions squad, but is also a bottom ager.

You said Murray plays like Dylan Patterson, who is who exactly?

he is a Suns Academy kid, in my opinion he is the best of the lot of them from QLD in the 2025 draft - which is a big call with Uwland and Annable.

As a 15 year old last year he was one of the best players in Palm Beach QAFL senior side, and is now playing VFL for the Suns at 16.

Caelan Murray has very similar attributes in the way he goes about his footy.

Who’s their kid who looks like and plays like Harley Reid?

So on the restrictions on how many players you can match eg. top 4 finish can match 1 academy kid.

Are they done on the end of the H&A season ladder or end of finals rankings eg. say we finish 5th to 8th in the H&A season but go on to play in the Preliminary final do we get to match 1 or 2 academy kids?
I know the final draft order is based on your finishing position post-finals. So it makes sense that this would also be the answer to your question. But I couldn't say for sure.

What does that have to do with the AFL?
It has everything to do with the AFL when clubs plan 2-3 years out and the draft hand they have. It is beyond amateurish if they implemented such a move in the same year after the planning clubs put in one and two years out.
