Lol really imagine being a North supporter I haven’t seen the interview but surely he it had to do Brad Scott because I remember Will saying he followed Geelong because of Nigel Lappin

Will in a Geelong guernsey would've reminded those of Gary Ablett Jr circa 2006.

Some experts believe the bid for Marshall could come at GWS pick now I’m afraid that if Sammy gets a bid that high we pass in favour of Annabel
We can go into a deficit and then trade into the 2025 draft with futures/trades etc.

Spot on!

What happens if we go into deficit how high of deficit can a club go into essentially without being in massive debt

We can trade 2 years forward starting next year. We will trade forward if Annable is that good.

We are a team who are in a cycle of ongoing finals run at present. So any chance to get a top-10 top-5 rated player while keeping the finals run going will be a no brainer. We trade forward.

lets say the Lash bid is @2 and Marshall bid is at @18 we have 2600+ points we obviously lose our first round pick next

season we don't have a 2nd pick next year because we traded it our first now becomes pick 30 because of deficit, we still have 2 academy

players apparently in Annabel and Waller next year according to Twomey we obviously take another deficit into 2026 how far back can we push our deficit

If the club feels that the bids will come at 2 and 18.
I have no doubt that 27 will be on the table as soon as the draft is underway and we could possibly have a net gain of 150 points or so and that will give us enough points to match both bids.

We can carry a maximum deficit of 850 points in to next year.

If we finish 1st next year and win the premiership, carrying our maximum deficit will wipe out our 2025 first round pick and third round pick, and leave us with our future 2026 picks/points to match a bid on any 2025 academy prospects.

Deficit comes off your picks before the trade period begins.

Why is it 850 oh wise one?

The AFL’s view is that every team has the potential to win the cup the following year, so future deficits are calculated on that premise.

So the value of pick 18, 36 and 54 added together.

We don’t hold a future second round pick, so it’s just the value of pick 18 and 54 for us.

Next year the points drastically reduce with the new dvi.

The issue is picks in 2027 are going to be a lot less valuable because Tasmania will get allocated most of the early picks. And trading forward from 2026 might make it hard to match a player like Matthew Owen if he keeps developing well.

Of course, it's better to deal with what's definite rather than what's speculative, and there's a lot still to play out. Maybe Fagan becomes Tassie's first coach or football manager and recruits some of our mature players so we have more picks in 2027 to match whoever is good then. Just one possible scenario. I'd still match Marshall this year as long as we can get Annable next year.

Waller isn't rated that highly. If he pushes up the order by this time next year and we can't match him, it'll suck, but it's hard to match every good prospect. The bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Even though we have 2,600 points, when the Levi, Kako & Lombard comes out before Marshall, our remaining pick points go up in the draft, and we should have enough for Marshall.

We do have enough points if Ashcroft goes at 2. We dont have enough if Ashcroft goes 1.

Oh I see. So we can't go down to 0 future points. Will that change with the introduction of being able to trade picks two years into the future tho?

I’d like to think the four northern clubs wouldn’t bid on each others academy players but perhaps I’m living in fantasy land. Perhaps it’s happened before but IMO it’s just poor form if they do.

It's happened often enough that it's pretty clear they don't really hold back if they rate the kid. Sydney's the main culprit but that's because GC and us have wiped out our drafts frequently enough due to academies and/or trades to not get into the bidding a heap in general.

Make me No.1: Top AFL draft prospects don’t want to play second fiddle
This year’s top AFL draft prospects are telling clubs almost unanimously that they want to be the No.1 pick rather than the back-up plan to a failed bid on a father-son or academy gun.
...
The Lions are prepared to match any Ashcroft bid, and it would be a surprise if he lasted beyond pick three based on The Age’s discussions with recruiters – but at least one rates him at No.5.
Also, according to this article a few of our VFL players from last year have nominated for the draft: Tahj Abberley, Darcy Craven, Kyle Dunkley, Jacob Lohmann, Carter Michael, Bailey Reeves, Benjamin Thomas

Goddam man. Please, try to use SOME punctuation. It genuinely can't be that much of a time save to skip words and every punctuation mark.

Next year in finals we're going to host the first game and lose it, and then go on a three game winning streak?

High School Graduation GIF by Gerbert!

Did Craven have to nominate in order for us to be able to take him in the rookie draft?
Yes.

From memory there's also a three year hold over from your initial nomination, so if any of our VFL boys are playing as overagers from nominating previously their names automatically appear anyway.

Edit: I retract that, it's no longer the case.
