Buckaroo gets a lot closer on a fairer track and the magic man played the percentages by going wide from that position.

Tell me a single MC winner that has won circling the field from near enough to last at the 700 when he launched.

Percentages? ... nahhhhh.

He would of went looking for runs on the inside once the cart into the race never eventuated if he was playing percentages.

Magic man shit the bed.

He didn't have a lot of options. What was taking him into the race? There wasn't much back there getting moving? And he certainly aint giving the winner the respect of it carting him into the race. Because if he put the brakes on at the 700m to get inside Onesmooth, then he's following Knights Choice into the race. On form, that's not ideal.

Absurde is about the only other horse that was back where he was that ran on other than the winner, and it was on the fence compared to him 3 wide - the difference in barriers.

Don't buy the whole he had no other options take either. He is a world class jockey supposedly so more should be expected than just dragging back to last and taking off 15 wide from a long way out.

We have seen plenty of great rides from those drawn the carpark who were more proactive

Problem is we only remember the good rides that win when ridden for luck. Plenty of good things beaten every day that are eating arse all the way up the straight and cannot get out.

He got cover and didn't have to make his run until the straight either. It's not that you can't come from the back it's that you can't take off and try to circle them from 800m out facing the breeze
Especially when the biggest question mark on the horse is whether it gets the distance - conserving energy and taking the shortest path home is paramount.

This. Watch the vision from above. He took two wrong options early in the race, and followed it up with the stupid decision to take off from the 800. The worst ride on a MC fancy I can remember.
Shane Dye Veandercross levels.
Both Dolan and the Japanese rider said they had watched multiple Melbourne Cups in the lead up (they did their homework) and both said it influenced them to stay inside and pick their way through the field. FWIW Dolan got up because the seas just parted for him and his horse never lost momentum at all.
Zahra's ride last year on WAF was the masterclass and what Joao should have been trying to emulate. Zahra didn't just drop out from barrier 16, he jumped, came across, but then hunted up to get his position, then put him to sleep on the rail.
