I think Pez was also surprised. Likely to leave
I'd imagine so. We haven't 'low balled' him...clearly these clubs are coming with above market price to get him out of a good situation (fair enough).
I'd be fine with Cumming staying and losing pez...I don't love it but it's better than hamstringing ourselves

What determines “market price” in these times of growing caps?

Clubs set to demand answers from AFL over draft at CEO summit in Perth

AFL clubs will demand answers from the league on its contentious changes to the draft bidding system as they gather in Perth for a three-day chief executives meeting this week.

The clubs have been summoned by AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon after a successful meeting last year in Werribee that helped shape the competition’s direction.

Clubs have been sparring with each other and the AFL over the academy system, travel inequities, the potential for three Grand Finals, and overall competitive balance.

The league is also reviewing the season structure so is open to adding a 24th game to the season, more blockbusters in Perth around the WA Day public holiday and tweaks to the new-look Opening Round.

Sydney chief executive Tom Harley said on Saturday the No. 1 priority for clubs is to gain clarity on whether the league’s certain changes to the draft will come in this year or in 2025.

The AFL has no July AFL commission meeting so any changes would only be put forward to the league’s governing body in August.

It means clubs might have less than two months to frantically plan to match points totals for father-son and academy picks or even trade out contracted players to secure those points.

Heartland clubs have been scaremongering over the depth of talent in Gold Coast’s academy on a weekend when their academy star Leo Lombard, a likely top 10 pick, was jointly named the Larke Medallist as the Under-18 championship’s best player.

Harley said on Saturday the clubs backed the AFL’s depth of talent under Dillon but wanted answers on the bidding system.

“The most important part from a timeliness is around the competitive balance and what the end of the season looks like with the drafting and the rules attached to that,” he said.

So there has been a long and wide consultative process starting early in the year so the resolution of that would be the prime consideration we are looking at.

“The first time ‘Dills’ facilitated a CEO’s conference in Werribee this time last year it was fantastic.

“I am really looking forward to heading over to Perth to have those conversations.

“Collectively we have enough clout and experience and enough collaborative thought leaders to make sure the game is in great stead,” he told SEN.

VESTED INTERESTS AHEAD OF CEO CONFERENCE

Carlton
: Will have enough points to secure Ben and Lucas Camporeale but traded out Paddy Dow for late picks last year so are keen to retain the current bidding system this year, aware by the time they secure father-son Cody Walker in two years they will have to stump up a higher price.
Richmond: Have stockpiled late picks including 57, 64 and 88 it might have used in a package to secure an early pick that might be useless if all picks past selection 54 have no points value.

Brisbane: Have father-son Levi Ashcroft as a top 5 pick and academy first-rounder Sam Marshall and if the AFL radically changed the bidding system it would be appreciably harder to match bids for both of them.

GWS: Have ruckman Logan Smith as an academy pick midway through the draft but are more interested in preserving academy access in the future and the Opening Round in Sydney.

Essendon
: Have livewire 175cm academy player Isaac Kako who could be a top 15 pick but he is available to the Dons only if the AFL changes the rules which currently allow Victorian clubs to secure academy picks if no one bids on them in the top 40 draft selections.

Gold Coast: Keen to retain academy talent pipeline, want better fixturing around travel and hope any academy changes are deferred to next year given academy mid Leo Lombard, who on Sunday jointly won the Larke Medal, is a top-10 pick in this draft.

Fremantle: Keen for a better fixture with one extra home game given their travel demands only got tougher with an extra away game with Gather Round.

Sydney: No star academy picks this year but want Opening Round to remain given it turbocharged their membership gains this year and handed the game extra visibility.

Looking like Perryman's more likely to stay than not but still very much up in the air.

GIANTS JET COULD SACRIFICE BIG BUCKS

Giants gun Harry Perryman could sacrifice almost one million dollars if he opts to stay at the club, as the Adelaide Crows come hard for the versatile Giant.

“He’s going to get superstar money either way, but he will sacrifice almost one million dollars if he wants to stay at GWS,” Ralph told Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle.

“The Adelaide deal is six years at $850,000, the GWS deal is $650,000-$700,000 over six years, it’s their final offer and their best offer. They just can’t afford to pay millions of dollars to so many players.”

Perryman is behind both Lachie Whitfield and Lachie Ash in the pecking order and one lure of heading to South Australia would be more midfield time.

“He wants to stay, he’s desperate to stay, his partner plays GIANTS Super Netball with the club, I don’t think he has any idea what he wants to do, it’s challenging,” Ralph said.

Hawthorn are also in the race, but Ralph believes their offer is of a similar financial level to the Giants which makes them unlikely to secure his services.

So it looks like the AFL are changing the rules again with Next Gen and Academy now open to bid matching anywhere.

Next Gen is the single biggest rort and shit stain on the industry. It was only brought in because Eddie had a “sky is falling” panic about GWS winning 10 flags. It does not bring in new talent it merely provides angles for teams to capture eligible talent.

As for the Academies, they are a necessary lever for the Northern clubs particularly with GWS and Gold Coast not able to get Father Son talent. If anything they should have tightened the rules and perhaps put a limit on the numbers that could be acquired through points matching.

This Laura Kane is a complete VFL numbskull. Every time I hear her talk it’s like going down to the pub with a group of entitled VFL flogs. She is so incredibly out of her depth and being played it’s not funny.

The draft should be less compromised, it should not be providing more stealth opportunity to ruin the process. Why make radical change when the competition is more even than ever?

If they aren’t producing enough talent then maybe look at how they are ruining the game with their rule changes, and maybe spend more of their own money on development and less on the salaries of the executive.

The AFL has informed clubs of a set of expected changes to its draft and player movement rules which would see Essendon cash in on a tantalising NGA prospect.

The proposed rules would see Essendon able to match a bid on exciting small forward Isaac Kako, who is a member of their Next Generation Academy.

Current rules mean the club would not have been able to match a bid on the Calder Cannons talent until after pick number 40.
However, clubs were briefed today about a rule change that will see all clubs have access to their Next Generation Academy players from pick one onwards.

St Kilda could also benefit from the rule change with Sandringham Dragons pair Adrian Cole and Lennox Hoffman a part of their NGA programs, while West Coast have Malakai Champion who is also a possible top 40 selection.

Other proposed changes for this year include having players remain on the rookie list for longer, contract length a key factor in free agency compensation and allowing father-sons to be rookie-listed.

Not sure why some of these draft rules aren't grandfathered for us until such time that we have sufficient academy players within the academy or that have been drafted to us.

We have, what, 350 players within our academy ? Gold Coast has 1000, Swans 2500 from memory and Lions would have a couple thousand too.

We have more than 3 times less within our academy than the next closest northern academy.

So, a bit of love recently for Logan Smith, one of this year's GWS Academy.

Selected in the U18 All Australian team (on the bench, behind Alex Dodson of SA). And named at #30 in Rookie Me Central's July Draft Rankings.

Fellow Larke winner Leo Lombard was also picked in the midfield from the Allies after a stellar carnival from the Gold Coast Academy product, while tall forward Jobe Shanahan, Giants Academy ruckman Logan Smith, Brisbane Academy midfielder Sam Marshall and Suns Academy member Zeke Uwland were the other Allies named.

TOWERING TALL

Smith is well in contention to be this year’s premier ruck prospect, and looked on track for such honours after a terrific Academy Series with GWS. Needless to say, the 204cm talent is quite adept at getting first hand to the ball but is quite mobile for his size and capable of getting involved on the follow-up. He has recently been blooded in the state league system and is yet another promising ruck specialist the Giants will have to consider out of their Academy.

JUNE RANKING: Unranked

LAST MONTH:

After starring for the Giants Academy, Smith averaged 11 disposals and 22 hitouts per his four Allies appearances. The rising ruckman won the hitout count in three of four matches, giving his midfielders first use of the ball. Smith also turned out for GWS’ VFL side with reasonable success, playing three times for a high of 19 touches, five marks and 28 hitouts against rivals, Sydney.

This is great by Healy and nice not so subtle dig at Cal Twomey and the other sycophants that are as silent as Marcel Marceau, because they fear being cancelled by the big clubs if they speak against the rort.

I’d rather have cancer than a beer with Cal “Timmah” Twomey.

Just a real slug of a unit

GREATER Western Sydney coach Adam Kingsley admits the loyalties of valuable utility Harry Perryman are being tested by lucrative offers from elsewhere in the AFL.

The 25-year-old NSW product is an unrestricted free agent at season's end and understood to be the subject of big bids from rival clubs including Port Adelaide, Hawthorn and Essendon.

As reported in Inside Trading this week, the Giants have upped their offer for Perryman to six years, along with fellow utility Isaac Cumming in an attempt to retain them.

After being quizzed on the Perryman conundrum, Kingsley conceded the club has a battle to keep him in Giants colours.

"It'll be a challenge for him, but we'd love him to stay," he said.

"He's very important, Harry knows this. We love him on field but more importantly we love him off field. His teammates love him, we want to keep him, and we'll do our best to do that but there's always clubs who have got more to give and that tests players' loyalty, so that's something that Harry's going through at the moment."

good luck to him.
7 years at $800K plus, hard to knock back.

We've been here before. Tough choices to be made, I know he wants to stay, but everyone has a price, and that sort of money is hard to walk away from.

Swans in the race will come down to what Warner decides as well

band 1 compensation pick!!

Definite first rounder for Pez. Caruso likes it.

Band 1, first rounder compensation pick, if we must...

I'd rather keep him tbh

Seems we are staying firm on dollars.
If he leaves, I fully understand.
