Lager is mass-produced garbage for people who haven't developed a palate.
It's harder to craft an IPA that actually tastes good and not like run-off from the car wash than it is to make mass produced liquid bread.

They're right. Whatever you think of the outputs in terms of flavour, making a proper Lager is a bit tricky as it involves pretty fiddly temperature manipulations and then keeping it near freezing for months. Whereas I believe that making an IPA isn't really any different to any other ale process.

Maybe I should have put it this way: if you take quality ingredients and equipment as a given, and put aside mass produced and marketed beers, then making a good Larger is harder than making a good Pale Ale.
