Forced merger with another small Melbourne club

I don’t think people understand yet how diabolically shit a 19 team comp will be

An odd number of teams or 19 specifically?

Byes would suck and they'd be less than nine games more than people think. The AFL won't like that - less games per week on average = less money.

Yep, moving to a 20 team comp is pretty inevitable now, surprised we haven’t heard more about it.
Relocating north doesn’t help the odd number of teams issue so don’t really see the need now. NT or Canberra are to obvious selections but for financial reasons it may be better to introduce a viable 3rd WA team and move north to NT.

I maintain that the AFL should publicly declare that the Melbourne team with the worst membership, performance etc in three years is deleted, or the worst two merged.

Gold Coast could end up merged into the Kangaroos and they can be known as the North Melbourne Kanagroos from now on.

Do you mean the northern Roos?

I mean just pretend the GC experiment didn't happen and make their fans feel like it still exists but it's gone.

I would like to see the business case for retention, how much has AFL viewership grown aside from Brisbane in QLD etc.

If my memory serves me well the Greek offered North approx $300 mil to relocate to Gold Coast and Brayshaw rejected it.

Late edit: it was $100 million lump sum and a higher amount over time.

I'm actually all for a third WA team, especially if it's a country-style South West team based in Bunbury/Busselton. I just think they've missed the ideal window, if they'd gotten the wheels turning a few years ago so they could have come in while WCE were struggling, that would have been the best result for WA footy.

That requires work from the FTE at the WAFC and they most certainly can't be doing any of that.

It has to be in Perth to work. 2.2m people vs bugger all. No one is building a giant stadium in Bunbury.

It doesn't have to be giant, nor would it only be aimed at the people of Bunbury - that's just the most viable location for a smaller boutique stadium.

A country WA side representing places like Bunbury/Margert River/Esperance has a much broader appeal than Perth team #3, IMO. I grew up in the Joondalup area, but I'm not convinced that's the place.

Can’t see any vic clubs spending 4 hours on a plane followed by 2 more hours on bus to play the bunyip’s

WA3 that is Perth based is either next or 21st because it’s financially stable. It would be more profitable than GWS/GC/Tassie & 3-4 Melbourne teams.

Bunbury doesn’t have the population. 100k people would barely get 5-10k at their games. Need 300-500k to just get enough support to make it financially viable. Mandurah would be better as you might get a bit more spillage from Perth but still think the Perth Pirates would be better.

There's direct flights to Busselton from Melbourne, even international flights can go straight to Busso nowadays
But yeah i agree the third team will be in Perth

Just because there's more people in Perth, doesn't mean the people of Perth are suddenly going to give a shit. A third of the Perth football market isn't just going to think "guess I'll go for the Perth Panthers now".

When we came in, we had a reason to exist (beyond the Vic's wanting to stifle West Coast.) We were a representation of a traditionally strong area in WA football heritage, a strong alternative for those who didn't like the plastic feel of the Eagles.

As I've said previously, I'm not pitching 'Bunbury' as the third team, the ground just needs to be based somewhere. The team would represent the likes of Bunbury, Margaret River, Esperance, Albany, practically any town in that region. A trip to Bunbury might be a bit more palatable for people in that region, it also provides a great boon to tourism in that area any time they play a WA side and some people choose to head down for the weekend.

The pitch isn't "**** me, isn't Bunbury shit-hot" - it's for another country football team, something different.

What area of Perth would you base a third Perth team in and where are the fans coming from?
