Can I ask something: I am thinking about getting a membership for next year, and noticed it saves little money, and loses money if I have to miss a couple of games for illness/whatever (I will be moving about an hour's drive away from Melbourne). So I don't really understand, what is the point of getting a membership? Does a higher percentage of money go to the club?

I'd wait until it's North's Membership day on SEN, it will be sometime in the new year Feb / Mar maybe? The membership packages are heavily discounted.

Unless it has changed recently:

The club gets 100% of Membership money.
The clubs gets 50% of at the gate ticket purchases count towards the gate, we will only see any of that 50% if we make a profit. The other 50% goes straight to the AFL.

From the responses, sounds like many members got the renewal notices and many did not.

I was one that did not. Every year I get the renewal notice, and opt-out at that point. I didn't get the renewal notice, so didn't know to opt-out.

I get all the other club e-mails, but did not get the renewal, the invoice once it was charged, nor the welcome e-mail. Not even an invoice/receipt for a $1300 charge. Something is broken here.

Sounds like we're on the same mailing list.

Yep no point signing up early. They don't do anything to acknowledge it. I got an image emailed to me that I can print out to thank me for 20 years of membership. So special! I sign up every year at full price but that is mainly as I am a tragic and want the club to get as much money as it can not because they do anything to thank you for being signed up early

Still the only acknowledgement that I am a member is the fact money came out of my bank account. 0 emails.
My experience exactly. Last season (2023) my membership pack didn't actually arrive until late July. At that point I thought "Why even bother?" ... Better late than never I suppose.

Yeah it’s the critical income for clubs.

It’s important but only if you can afford it of course

I didn't get my auto-renewal either. This nice lady got back to me in 30 minutes.
All sorted.

Fatah's a dude, Hoji. Great bloke too, I was seriously considering walking away after 31 years of membership for the way the club treated me late in the season. If I hadn't got onto Fatah it might have been curtains.

I never get renewal notices.
I didn't, and nor did any of my relatives. None of us were sent any receipt either, although we did confirm that the renewal was processed and we've requested plastic tickets (mainly due to my in-laws, who are both at 65 years consecutive memberships). I called up to ask if the digital (Kayo) one was processed, which it also was, but I honestly don't know how much that costs this year - my wife gets the credit card statement and I don't ask in case she probes other costs that might have been booked up. Better to live in silent bliss.

At this point (I'm a reserved seat member) it's simply just paying for a desired seat next to people you go with and being so rusted on you can't turn your back away.

If I wasn't so attached I would pull the plug straightaway but I'm a sucker for torture and love them too much.

I wish I could claim my membership as a donation so it's claimed as a tax deduction. I had an 11 game membership and managed to get to 3/4 of 1 game (the Sydney debacle where we made 1 too many subs) due to having a 1 year old
Your doing better than me

We had a toddler in 2006-2007 and no way could I afford the membership on one wage so I lapsed

That broke consecutive years from 1992 to 2006

2008 start at zero again

Every year I ask to be taken off auto-renewal and the campaigners that call me up never ******* do it.
It was 4 years straight for me constantly calling up after receiving the yearly "we are going to charge your cc" email, that they finally removed the auto-renewal. In the 4th year, I got them to read the previous 3 years' worth of "the customer doesn't want his cc kept on file, or to be on auto-renewal", that they did the one-off payment for my membership, and then sent through a confirmation email advising me they'd removed my cc details.
