Training 2024 Preseason reports and discussion

Interesting reports above that differ a little from mine but here we go.

Best-
CJ Weddle CMac Nash and Newc the best. Seamus got it a fair bit but butchered it by foot. CJ has that real bounce and run back that we have missed.

Hardwick looks completely lost as a forward and out of position. Can’t see that experiment lasting too long.

Chol is a mountain and a huge presence for us. Kicked poorly for goal today and missed a few sitters but will be very good for us as a target. If he and Lewis can stay out of each others way, we have a decent combo to work with.

The Whiz just finds the ball. Again missed a few but gets in the right positions all the time and looks dangerous. So many scrubber kicks forward and he ends up with it.

Ginni was smashed a few times and really hurt but he gets back up and keeps going. His footy smarts and brain are great and can hit a little left foot kick 20 metres in traffic when others blaze away.

Mackenzie seems to find the ball and reads it ok but far too many times caught with it. 3-4 times today pinged for holding the ball. His movements by hand and foot are Sam Mitchell clone.

Scrimshaw looks likely to be CHB for mine with Blankets at FB and Sicily 3rd tall. Amon Mass and CJ all providing run from the back.

Anyway enough for now.
Difference is Mitchell rarely got caught!

Got there just after 10am, so missed the very start.

Q1
● CJ vs Massimo on the wing
● centre ball-up, Hustwaite with a huge tackle on Nash, winning the free
● blue worked it forwards and Meek marked in front of DGB on the lead
● Scrim with a big defensive mark amongst multiple players
● Ramsden absolutely out worked Reeves, got 10m on him and took the chop out mark on the wing
● Hustwaite got hit in a tackle, comes off. Butler replaces him in the middle
● Bennetts snap at goal
● Worpel has a terrible kick under limited pressure, gets angry with himself
● CJ has a high tackle on Watson, ball is kicked in long to the F50 and Chol takes a big mark and goals
● drinks break
● Nash with another clearance
● Chol really standing out
● Weddle and Watson getting into it, then Lewis giving Weddle a shove and some choice words
● Ball-up in the pocket, Nash tackle on Mackenzie, wins free and snaps the goal
● Ward to a wing (vs CJ) and MacDonald moved to the middle
● Newcombe wins the free at the ball-up, Worpel gives away a 50 and Newcombe goals
● Low trajectory kick into the 50 (unsure who), Watson marks it in a fairly congested area

End of quarter:
Yellow - 25
Blue - 26

Q2
● Nash on a wing to start
● Yellow worked it forwards, Chol with another huge mark but missed the kick
● great rebounding from Scrimshaw and CJ, leading to a Ramsden goal
● Mackenzie with a great kick to someone (couldn't see who), who then turned it over to Newcombe, who gave it to Ginnivan and the Wiz worked it forward to Lewis for a goal
● Meek wins the ruck contest down to Mackenzie, who had another nice kick
● Watson down in a contest, looked sore
● Amon with a great overlapping run from defence, and an even better kick
● another rebound with Amon, to Butler to CJ, who kicks long. DGB had a big defensive effort
● drinks break
● Nash wins the clearance. Eventually leads to Finn goaling
● Nash to Ward, who wins the clearance
● Hustwaite with ridiculous hands to Mackenzie under pressure, who lazers a kick. Great play from both
● JOS tackled high
● Scrimshaw goes down in a defensive marking contest, comes off for a bit
● Ward to a wing, replaced by Moore (who had been very quiet) in the middle. Chol into the ruck
● Newcombe to Nash to someone (couldn't see) to the Wiz, who misses his shot
● Mackenzie outmarks Ward on the 50, plays on and misses
● unknown player with a bad turnover by hand when running out of D50, JOS gets the ball and snaps a goal
● Wiz chasedown on Mackenzie, paid a free however he did get rid of it (had a good angle of it)
● Weddle with a great link-up run from D50 along the wing, gets it to Meek, who switches to Chol, who goals. Great play

HT
Yellow - 46
Blue - 46

Q3 and Q4 - I stopped taking as many notes
● Scrimshaw back on the field
● MacDonald started in the middle, Nash on the bench. Nash then swapped back into the middle straight after
● Blue team put on great pressure twice as Yellow attempted to rebound from D50 and work it up the wing
● Nice tap down from Reeves to Newcombe
● Massimo with two lazerbeam kicks from the backline
● Blue turned it over in the middle, Yellow worked it out to Nash, who dished to Dimma, who hit up Chol, who goaled
● next play was a free to Reeves, who gave it to Nash, then to Ward who hit up Chol, who missed

● play resumed with a ball-up in Blue's D50
● Mackenzie involved in a passage of play twice, working the ball up along the wing from D50
● Frost gets the pill and has a poor short kick
● Chol has the ball on the HFF, switches it across
● Mackenzie running amok, finding space and kicked to the advantage of the forwards. Good defensive play stops the mark
● Mackenzie again hitting a target after a quality clearance from Finn, the forward misses though
● Dimma nails a kick to Chol
● Dimma then moved back, and takes an intercept mark literally the next passage of play
● Hustwaite finishes off the game with a glorious pickup and a no-looker hand off over his shoulders, Nikola Jokic style, to a teammate

Couldn't tell you what the final score was, though Yellow won by about 2 goals. I think maybe it was 60 to 49.

I'm stoked with the reports - thanks fellas.

I'm even more stoked that the two recruits who many outside hawthorn FC perceived as maybe a bit "iffy" are tearing up the track

Ginnivan and Chol - well done boys for cracking in, getting on board and being a great example of how a change of club can change your career.

I believe 2024 will be the best career year for both men.

Very nice work.

Sam said to Nash: "why aren't you training with the mids?"
Was me who reported it and yep that’s basically what Sam said.

Nash was sent to the forwards, Sam asked him why he wasn’t training where he’s showing the most promise. Both of them shared some looks about it as if to say ‘yep’.

Thanks for the report and especially keen for blankets on me given how cold it is here in the UK!😉

Actually on the subject even Kosy had the ability to pull in a (very) rare screamer. And then 5 minutes later drop the simplest of chest marks 😬

But yes Chol is still a much more consistently good mark than either of his predecessors which will make our forward line a lot less Lewis dependant (although Mitch is still obviously the main man).

I get the feeling watching highlights and reading reports that we're going to play some exciting footy this year but we still have a lot of development to go.

Maybe 6 months behind our 2007 season?

I’ve been saying that. Much more depth today, but we still don’t know how good our cream is

Hodge Mitchell Franklin Roughead Lewis to Day Newk Sicily Lewis and cmac/ward/French/Watson nah…Weddle!
