HAWTHORN is set to receive a timely boost in round one with vice-captain Dylan Moore on track to face Essendon on March 16 after being sidelined with glandular fever.

The 24-year-old missed the Hawks' intraclub and last Friday's match simulation against the Western Bulldogs after being diagnosed with the viral infection earlier this month.

But after training with the main group on Thursday ahead of Saturday night's AAMI Community Series clash against the Bulldogs in Launceston, there is growing confidence that Moore will be ready to start the season.

Moore won't play at the University of Tasmania Stadium this weekend or in the VFL practice match between Box Hill and Footscray, but will continue to build his training load across the next fortnight, after making inroads this week.

Hawthorn has endured a wretched injury run to start the year, losing star midfielder Will Day to a stress fracture in his foot after the first session following the Christmas break, before James Blanck ruptured his ACL, Changkuoth Jiath strained his hamstring, Denver Grainger-Barras suffered turf toe – all in the intraclub – and Will McCabe was sidelined with bone stress in his back.

Half-back Seamus Mitchell has been given the green light to start contact training next week after undergoing surgery to repair a broken jaw.

The 21-year-old has been able to continue non-contact training across February, with the Hawks to make a decision next week on whether to play him in a VFL practice match against Richmond on March 9 or just up his training load ahead of the season-opener.

Karl Amon is expected to play against Luke Beveridge's side in Tasmania after missing last week's match simulation due to soreness. The former Port Adelaide wingman has spent the summer training as a half-back, but could return to his usual role after Jiath's injury.

Veteran small forward Luke Breust will also bank some minutes on Saturday night after missing last Friday's scratch match due to a wedding.

Off-season signing Mabior Chol has trained all week after sending a scare through the Hawthorn camp when he came off the ground cradling his arm, after landing heavily on his shoulder.

The media (besides Kane Cornes...) has changed its tune on us once again. But I kind of like it.

After the season finished and into the early parts of this year, there was a decent amount of hype around this team. To the point where a noticeable number of non-supporters were saying we could challenge for the finals this year. I was honestly nervous, I loved some positive chat about us, for once, but thought the media might be putting too high of an expectation on us. And, there's nothing worse than going into a season and coming out worse off than what people predicted.

But now, with all the injuries, the chat has become similar to how it was at the beginning of last year. With people saying we are guaranteed bottom 4 and are fighting to not finish last. But honestly, I don't mind, it'll help us to fly under the radar at the start of the year. I predict a slow start, with us making an impact after the first 8 rounds.

And I definitely don't think all hope is lost, not even close. I mean David King has completely overreacted by saying our season was effectively over on Feb 15th....I think people forget that a majority of the injuries to best 22 players have them back and playing most of the season. With no other injuries and based on the information released from the club, this will be our injury list at round 5.

Blanck - Season (Big loss, but is a role that can be filled - how much worse is Frost than Blanck? Even if you think it's a lot, that's likely a 2 or 3 goal difference on a bad day, which yes, is frustrating, but not season-ruining. Plus, Phillips looks promising, he's ahead of where Blanck was when he joined the club in the midseason draft)

DGB - After bye rounds (Isn't in our best 22 when everyone's fully fit - the most upsetting result will be any impact on his future)

Wingard - After bye rounds (In best 22 but we have plenty of talented guys to fill his position)

McCabe - Just before bye rounds (Isn't best 22. Won't have big impact on the side, he'll unfortunately just have less development at Box Hill this year)

As Sammy Mitchell has said time and time again. It's never as good or as bad as it seems.
Seamus is a big one for me too. When is Seamus back ?

I think just having a bunch of injuries around one short period of time has allowed the “injury crisis” narrative to snowball.

There’s 18 teams and most focus for deeper analysis tends to be on the stronger, more established teams who are expected to be relevant to finals. So most aren’t taking a granular view of which of our players are best 22 and will be missing long term.

They’re essentially taking that injury crisis narrative and extrapolating it to think our 2024 season will end up like the Eagle’s 2023.

He didn't have a clear run at it due to injuries. It would have been interesting to see how he would have played as a defender once his body stopped letting him down.

It really wasn't Kosi's injuries that let him down.

Unfortunately, he just didn't have any football awareness.
He always struggled to get into the right position.
And, in going for marks, he almost marked the ball on a hundred occasions.

Richmond witnessed the same problems last week.

Kosi was born with springs as hands (think Edwards Scissorhands). No cushioning whatsoever.

Gee Wizzzz so many smalls.

I do wonder whether Wingerz could be moved about. Already has shown he is great in the midfield but could he do a swapsy with Hardwick?
Yep we do have a lot of small forwards ATM but both Chad and Bruest are in the twilight of their careers.

I imagine it’s only going to be a temporary glut.

Yes, as a forward those are his issue - awareness, "smarts" and concrete hands. He has the athleticism.

Which is why I wonder how he would have gone as a defender, where is job is to simply beat someone else. That mitigates most of his issues because he'd be following someone else around.

I'm not saying we should have kept him or anything like that, I just think maybe it's an unexplored avenue for him. He didn't get a chance to do that due to injuries, and then being moved forward.

And likewise, I wonder how many mids could rotate back? Obviously Day can. Have plenty who dabble with forward and mid. It’s like reverse Clarko

Day and Mackenzie (who started out at a defender in juniors, which isn't uncommon I suppose).

Maybe Ward could play the hard running HBF role? You know he'd be diligent and would work hard defensively too.

I'm not sure I would trust any of the others in the backline.

Edit: Hustwaite too, who played as a tall defender at times in juniors.

I thought I read somewhere that Marbs was doing non-contact training this week with Seamus!?

I'm still not convinced we'll see Wingard as a regular senior footballer this season, despite his swift recovery. Fantastic for him personally of course!

Will still require some serious seasoning at VFL level, and we have some pretty lofty expectations (compared to previous seasons) of what our new forward line can accomplish.
He may need an injury to a Breust or the Wizard taking longer than expected to come on to see any consistent AFL minutes.
Hell of an injury he's coming back from, and players historically can lose some speed and burst returning from it.

Seamus is back in contact training now and is expected to be available for selection Rd1. Kade Simpson not sure if he plays Box Hill practice match first. Box Hill hill play practice Matches against Richmond on March 9th and Essendon March 16th (this will be curtain raiser for AFL rd 1.)

Will be joining in ball work as early as next week apparently.
So he is already having shots on goal and doing handball and kick to kicks. Joining skills next week would be huge. It will all be about building fitness from there.

So, in summary, the news is great up forward, where we don't need it as much, and terrible down back, where we need it most...

😡😠😩😓
We will get outsized in the air at times down back but we need to play to our strengths. Team defence, bring the ball to ground and rebound with speed and skill. Scrimshaw, Weddle and Sicily will be asked to play tall at times and they are more than capable of doing so. Frost or Phillips (but not both) is the big call!

We aren't going to need defenders when we drop 40 goals a game.

Shootout time.
