Spot on. We press forward way too hard. We stack too many players in the centre-half forward line. (sometimes blocking our forwards to make a lead into space). Neglecting defense.
  • Too many players at the fall of the ball, one handpass can break the structure. They play a wide triangle with us whereas we play a narrow one, looks beautiful when we win it but shocking when we don’t
  • Over investing in our press leaves Weitering, Kemp scrambling back to defend opposition attacks that we should be positioned to defend
  • Our defensive exits are predictable and outside of McKay and TDK (when fit) we don’t have a 195cm marking target to exploit mismatches on the wing.. too many times are we putting it on Motlop and Owies heads
  • Overuse of handball attracts pressure and creates intercept marking opportunities inside 50 as we try to pick the eyes out of kicks to Charlie and Harry
  • Also, way too often do we blaze away from 40-50 when H or Charlie are in a 1:1.. those are the times we should be kicking to them and backing them to win 8/10 times

First things first, we’ve underachieved this season. No doubt.

But contrary to many on here, I think the club cares deeply and the players care deeply. What is being taken for indifference, laziness, gutlessness, etc in my view is a group of players who have hit the wall physically and mentally. The injuries today are evidence of that.

That we’ve reached this point is something I attribute to 15 months of attempting to play contest and high pressure footy. Melbourne is the other club who plays like us, and they are in the same boat. It is a style of football which simply isn’t sustainable.

The problem is that without pace and footskills, contest and pressure is all you’ve got. We haven’t got speed and we struggle to find targets. And that will be one of the post mortems we need to have.

For the younger types around here, the years 1992-1994 are hopefully instructive. In 1992 we lost our last few to miss the finals. In 1993 we fell at the grand final and found out more about our list. The same happened again in 1994. By 1995 we had added Pearce and Clape because we knew we lacked mid sized forwards, we added Manton because we knew we lacked flexibility in defence, and we added Camporeale and blooded Whitehead to add pace. We still lacked pace in 1995, but we had a baseline we could fall back on if we needed it. Autonomy was handed over to senior players who had the experience to know what they were doing.

The mark of this club will be in how we learn from 2022-2024. I still remember the interview with Cook in the Age during the middle of 2023 where he said he wasn’t as enamoured with the list as others. On reflection, the 2023 run home probably prevented the clean out he had envisaged. So it has set us back somewhat. But I’m confident the lessons can be learnt about 2022-2024 as a club, and that we can hit 2025 with some fixes in place.
Love the post, however modern football is all about pressure. Speed allows you to close space and penerate quickly on turn over.

Our pressure is great, but we are are battered and so its dropped off and without speed we are vulnerable

Your’e either in with this club or you’re not.

I’ve been rusted on for over 50 years.

Nothings gunna change that.

They’ve given me some of the greatest memories of my life.

Been there, seen it, lived it.

What I can’t stand is gargoyles sitting in the wings, waiting for a loss.

We had a bad day, deal with it.

So, you either stick with us, or piss off.

You won’t be missed.
Great post, honestly.

Drink smoke it’s all happening again

You mean Stocker who was tipped out for challenging senior players?

Yeah we bin those that don’t bend to the shape we want them to
I thought we treated Stocker poorly because he was different but that’s not what I was suggesting here.
I feel like we are trying to manipulate the public message rather than being genuine - it’s rather condescending - but probably the least of our problems right now.

Pretty cool that Carlton was a great club for some of the old timers but Carlton has been pathetic for a very long time
The Club is great, and it always has been. The teams that have represented it at times haven't been the greatest but that is a different argument.

In summary; "trust the process"

Right, I can see what you meant now - my bad!

A terrible day to be at the footy. We had to be at our best to make a game of it and we fell well short of that. This will take a while to get over. Carlton has not been great for my emotional wellbeing in recent times. I should be right to go by the time the next game comes round. It’s not over. In fact it’s never over. I know what I signed up for in 1964 when I decided on a team to follow. That commitment sometimes results in hurt that’s difficult to take. There’s no doubt I’ll have a restless night because I love this footy club. I feel for the players, coaches and administration. I’ll never disrespect what they do on our behalf. A special thanks to Stig O'Hara. It had to be said.

This morning I was mocked for saying top 4 done after today season is done. We'll drop another one if not both...bookmark it
Will it make you happy if we lose both just so that you can come here boasting that you were right? Turn it up.

To be honest the best thing for us is to miss the 8.

Most people have guessed the obvious delists and trade players however after today you can add some more to that list.

If we aren’t very aggressive come the trade period id be pissed.
