Exactly this. The AFL is rigged. It's all biased towards the Northern states. There's no reason for it. It doesn't make any sense. Blah blah blah .

No. We play in this "opening" round and then play the following week in round 1. We will have a bye sometime after gather round. The AFL have not decided whether all 8 clubs will have this bye in the same week or not. I bloody hope so. I realise of course that the AFL couldn't care less but it will make a total mess of AFL Fantasy and Supercoach.

The HS has reported that the 8 opening round teams will have their byes in rounds 2,3,5 & 6. All teams play in gather round (4).
Two teams in each of those 4 weeks. What a bloody mess. We will now have at least 8 weeks with less than 9 matches being played. Channel 7 will love it as they will now get to show an extra 4 matches in 2024.

It's good for us no doubt but the reason it's happening is because the AFL is too chicken shit scared of Victorians to call a first round of footy happening outside of Victoria "round 1."

Great coup for the club. I hope the Sydney based fans rock up in big numbers and put on a show for the rest of the league to see. The thing that baffled me though was in the AFL media release it talked about the swans kicking the season off while celebrating their 150 years history....... but they have put the game on at a day and time that a great chunk of their supporter base from their original home will have of hope of attending due to work / school commitments.

Using the long weekend Monday as an incentive for the Vics to travel. So take Friday off and make a long weekend of it is what they're aiming for.

No way of getting up on the Thursday for the game though. Finish work at 4pm. Hour at best to the airport so earliest flight would be 6pm. Land and disembark at 7.30pm. Wouldn't get to the ground until after 8.

Good point , but sadly for some still cricket season and this is really early.
