After just two matches H.Reid is ranking as the third-best onball midfielder at the club, behind Kelly and Yeo.


Despite retirement, Hurn still comes in higher in the rankings than any current Eagle.

Forgive my ignorance here, I wouldn't mind following this more, however, I can't ascertain where the players scores come from?

I went back to your original post and didn't see an explanation for individual players scores (although I might have read straight over it).

Is it similar to your "Using data to identify midfielders" where you have set parameters?

Round 3 (vs Western Bulldogs @ Marvel Stadium [Docklands Stadium])



Barnett omitted for J.Williams in a 76 point loss to the Bulldogs.



Round 4 (vs Sydney Swans @ Adelaide Hills [Mt Barker Oval])



Brockman out with concussion, Jones omitted.

Rotham named for his first game of the season, L.Edwards coming into the starting squad from substitute.

Rawlinson given the substitute for his AFL debut.

The squad performed above their rating in an encouraging loss to Sydney in Gather Round.

Taking injuries into account, West Coast now comes in 16th in club rankings.

This weeks' opponent, Richmond comes in last, so a rare win for the club may be on offer.

Round 5 (vs Richmond Tigers @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])



With Jamieson injured, Witherden makes his first appearance since Round 1, coming in as the replacement defender in a smaller squad that doesn't need so much height down back with Richmond's injuries.

With Brockman available, Rawlinson makes way and Maric moves to to the substitute.


The squad overwhelmed a depleted Tigers, winning by 39 points.

Ratings updated after Round 5.

With improved team performances, improvements in ratings are starting to follow.

The squad now has 7 players rated 'B' or higher. H.Reid is likely to make that 8 by next week.


Elsewhere, M.Bontempelli still reigns at the very top of the player ratings.

The injuries to S.Taylor and S.Coniglio see GWS fall from 1st to 3rd in the club rankings.

I know he got some junk time goals on Thursday, but I thought he was pretty average against the Saints after an absolute stinker last weekend.

The back end of last season saw him create a huge gap at the top between him and the rest of the competition, which has been all but erased in the last two weeks.

Unless he has a huge performance next week his rule at the top is coming to an end.

L.Edwards forced out with concussion the only change for Derby 58. Maric comes into the first team and Sheed features for the first time in 2024 as the substitute.


Against expectations, the selected team thrashed Fremantle to record back-to-back wins for the first time since Round 19, 2021.



Ratings updated after Round 6 also.

Yeo continues to rocket up the rankings in his renaissance. At the start of the season he was ranked 135 among on-ball midfielders - now it is 25 with a bullet.

If you exclude all matches prior to 2024, Yeo becomes the highest ranked on-ball midfielder in the competition by some margin.

Mostly travelling this week, so more belated updates...


Round 7 (vs Gold Coast Suns @ People First Stadium [Carrara Oval])



H.Reid rested. Barrass suspended for rubbing someone's face into the ground. Long forced out with injury.
Coming in are the two Edwards and Ryan for his first appearance in almost a year.

After an underwhelming cameo as the substitute, Sheed gets the same role for the cross-continent journey to Queensland.


Against the strongest contested opponent in the competition, the team remained competitive, only being outscored by a single goal over three quarters. A 6 goal to 1 period of dominance by the Suns during the third quarter ended the contest however.

Yeo moves up to an A rating. Waterman is now named in the All-Competition Best 22 Second Team.

Hopefully the week just gone is the last of needing to travel for some time and this will be updated with greater regularity.



Round 8 (vs Essendon Bombers @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])



Barrass, H.Reid and Long return. Hunt misses with injury, whilst H.Edwards and Brockman are omitted.

Maric being ruled out by illness sees Sheed promoted into the squad 22.

Johnston is named as the substitute for his AFL debut.


Against an Essendon side performing well above expectations, the squad remained competitive, falling short by 6 points, which could have been a potential victory if not for some costly turnovers and a brain-snap from Cripps whilst Waterman was lining up for goal.

Unfortunately the match was marred by injuries to Long, Waterman and Yeo. Long will not be seen again this season. Yeo should be expected much sooner after the injury in his 200th match milestone, but with his history it can be expected that cautious approach will be taken. Waterman to miss at least a week with concussion.

With Yeo being the best performing on-ball midfielder and Waterman leading goals per game of the 2024 season to-date, their absences are going to leave very large holes in the team.



Round 9 (vs Collingwood Magpies @ Marvel Stadium [Docklands Stadium])



Yeo, Waterman and Long out with injury.

Coming in are Hunt, Maric and Dewar who is the club's second AFL debutant in successive weeks.

After debuting from there the previous week, Johnston remains as the substitute.

With injuries having an impact, the selection falls back down to an F- rating for the trip to play the reigning premiers.


The weakened team was hammered by the Magpie midfield. Collingwood kicked 7 goals direct from centre clearance during the first half and coasted their way to an 11 goal winning margin.

Round 10 (vs Narrm [Melbourne Demons] @ Optus Stadium [Perth Stadium])



Waalitj Marawar with two changes for Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

Waterman returns, taking the place of Petruccelle who misses with injury.

Substitute for the past two matches, Johnston is omitted, with Jones recalled for his first appearance since Round 3.

Dewar, after debuting last week, is named as the substitute.


Still missing Yeo, the selection can only manage an F rating.


In perhaps the biggest upset of the season to date, the team comprehensively outplayed a top-4 favourite in Narrm from start to finish, running away to a most impressive 35 point victory.

In just his 9th match, no.1 pick H.Reid picked up the maximum score of 10 coaches votes.

After his performance against Narrm, H.Reid moves up to a B rating.

Elsewhere, Bontempelli re-takes top spot in the rankings after losing it last week.

For comparison, in each of the past three seasons, West Coast has suffered far worse with injuries than what any club is currently experiencing.

As can be seen above, it could be argued that the clubs most impacted by injury currently are Adelaide and GWS - who to no surprise, have not been the focus of any headlines...

Seems to not be much looking beyond the border with much of the media on this one at the moment.

Round 11 against the Crows pissed me off too much to bother, then St Kilda and Kangaroos compounded that further and end of financial year followed that.
