Per bolded - We don't have anyone in the VFL side who's been proven on that metric.
And we don't get a definitive answer until Fin or others get a block of games in the AFL.
Agree with this. It's not that others are certain he will make it, more that how we can tell without him getting proper crack at it.

Would love to find a way for Ned Long to get to us, kid is waaaaaaay too good for VFL

WTF is going on with our treatment of this guy? Trains with the seniors in the offseason but not as an SSP train-on, merely as a VFL player. Then joins the seniors for training in-season as well. What gives?

As a club, we are always trying to improve everyone associated with the club. They probably think Long will make it but it doesn't necessarily have to be with us.

If that’s the case why aren’t the rest of the VFL team up in arms about it?

I thought we had the maximum amount ssp train on's in the pre-season which would be why we couldn't add him.. its obvious they rate Long, hence why he's training with the seniors. Perhaps they are hoping to pick him up in the MSD or at the end of the year.

They're not 12

They must be furious he was selected in the Vic squad & always gets in the coaches votes each week too then.

I dunno, you’ve got an entire VFL team but exactly one VFL listed player gets to train away from his team? Seems pretty ****ing weird to me.

And as for the limited number of SSP train-on spots, that’s true, but we only added Sullivan to the SSP training later in the piece after initially considering him for the VFL side… whatever talent eval we did on Long must have been pretty ad hoc. Did we watch him last season? Has he grown another 6” since 2023?

I seriously don't think they'd be losing any sleep over another player getting opportunity to develop in his career.

I don't actually see what the issue is. He's obviously talented or he wouldn't have been the only VFL player from our side to be selected in the Vic side.

As for the ssp selections, we can't select everyone. We picked 2 mids & a tall. Who knows whether we select Ned as well if the opportunity arises in the MSD or end of year. Then it would make perfect sense as to why they've asked him to train with the seniors, wouldn't it?

Most of them would work and not be available and an extra number at training probably helps us as much as him.

Maybe… handy for Long that he doesn’t have to work like the rest of the VFL team… because reasons.

No issue with who they listed, I find the fact that he didn’t get a train-on spot curious though. Maybe our talent ID isn’t that flash.

Maybe it's because we had the maximum amount of players listed as SSP's by the time he'd signed on with our VFL side.
Ultimately, we're talking about a player who no one wanted. He's been really good in the VFL but that doesn't always guarantee that they can play AFL. I think the hype is premature

Also 21 year old 194cm midfielders aren't common. He's too good for VFL.

I'm only looking at his vfl performances, selection in the Vic squad & subsequent performance.

I guess that's what the club is also looking at. You can only judge him on his performances this year, which have been pretty good.

If they are assisting his development by giving him time training with the seniors, because a. he can & b. he wants to .. I don't see the issue. It's beneficial to him, our vfl side & we also get to see how he fares training with the AFL guys if were considering him as a msd or end of year pick up.

Most of them are probably at work or uni when the AFL team trains in the morning.

For those that aren't I guess it comes down to how hard you want it and Long clearly does so might have asked to participate in extra training alongside our AFL listed squad.
