Donald promised to 'drain the swamp' but all it ended up with, was a new landlord.
True. He’s a corporatist building his movement off the back of labour and capitals distrust of financialisation.

But to get thinks like a Keynesian make work program past a GOP congress, his options were defence ( as the anti-war candidate, he had to export to any regime that would pay) and a wall.

Biden, with the Dems behind him was able to channel these funds to the green new deal like projects and create a ton of manufacturing jobs

Which makes me think that the support for Trump amongst white working class men who benefitted from these projects, is less to to do with economics (though the inflation lag plays a part) and more to do with identity and a changing world.

Tariffs might be a Hail Mary to get those jobs ‘back onshore’.
To some he probably also gets the credit for putting the issue on the agenda forcefully even if he didn’t have the competence to pull it off.

Do you believe that retaliatory tariffs will grow US exports and farm income?

China didn’t just sit back and ‘take it’ last time. In 2018-19 direct U.S. agricultural export losses totalled $27b.

Well I'd start with 35 felonies over a misdemeanour (at worst) hush money payment that would have many politicians in prison if it were enforced consistently.

Inb4 claims of "but that was conducted by the DOJ, not the Biden / Harris establishment power class" by the historically ignorant!
Once again where is the evidence of the Biden/Harris "weaponised/lawfare"?

Can you provide one piece of evidence that shows Biden/Harris had anything to do with Trump's prosecution?

Can you explain why it is a misdemeanor when Trump was found guilty of felony charges? (that is fact)

Given FK's latest posting I am beginning to think he might not have been on the up and up when he was saying that he was undecided on who to endorse.....

Well it's just obvious innit. A country known for having its powerful class not play by their own rules. A guy they impeached twice over bulldust and threatened with comments like "The intelligence community have 6 ways from Sunday to get back you" - Chucky Schumer saying the quiet part out loud. Nek minit some kid with no online footprint is a few cm off killing ole Donald and the public get told nothing about him or his motive... I digress m8.

Now they got about a thousand indictments against the man by being less consistent in their application of the rules than your average AFL umpire. At some point it becomes clear that it's political harassment!

How dare you, I was completely on the fence until the cheque from Tenet Media cleared my team crunched the numbers and established the objectively correct decision.

That’s a lot of words to say you’ve got nothing.

No economist thinks they are a good idea. So I doubt they would work without other tradeoffs and inflation.
But if you truly wanted to be more homegrown I guess they could ramp in % up over time. But that's hardly small government which the GOP beat there chest about. It would require an active role in choosing which industries to support and which to allow to potentially fall to competition.

Could easily talking about some blokes I know.
The "both sides are the same", "the sheilas brought a plate", have a punt, inwardly and quietly bristle at Julia Gillard having
been PM and the "60's, 70's the music is not the same" hit parade.
They are not malicious in any manner and nor are any outright fans of Trump, but his chutzpah, cynicism and blokey persona really strikes a chord with them.
Very confident that a few of them, in an act of petty defiance, would vote for the Australian version of Trump and not the "Sheila".
Very likely many young blokes too.
Just because.
A story as old as time.

Good point regarding Exports which many farmers rely on.

Serious question: is using tariffs to protect local industry not traditionally a left wing concept? I feel like unions and left-wing parties wanted to keep the auto industry going in Australia, for example, and it was the RWNJ's who decided it was okay to offshore this stuff because of muh free market. Then covid hit and many of us realised that we should probably have a little bit of local manufacturing independence instead of creating an economy that depends on outsourced slavery 🤷‍♂️

Yes, but take the NYTimes favourite son Paul Krugman for example. He won a Nobel prize on the advantages of international trade. He like other economists thought that even ‘exploited’ labour overseas would provide advantages to a society if it raised purchasing power there, therefore leading to the upward spiral of prosperity.

You can see why he would be popular in New York. But I don’t think even he thinks that way still. Especially as authoritarian states, like China, have been able to mix central control with capitalism…in the process also crushing any hint of power for organised labour. 6 days a week 10-12 hours etc.

We can’t compete with that and don’t want to.

The Whitlam Government removed or decreased tarrifs across the board within a fes months of gaining power
