the team at the top of the ladder is doing fine
Check the Werribee FC website and their "player profiles". You'll find almost none of their players are recruited from the local Wyndham LGA.

That is not a criticism of Werribee FC, theyre a fantastic model for stand alone VFL clubs, but its the reality of stand alone clubs in the VFL. If you recruit only from your local neighbourhood you'll not be competitive - and you may as well compete in the local comp.

Thanks but you don't know what your talking about. If you took two minutes to look at Werribees team you will notice that Werribee has built a side on recruited players and not from development and good on them but if it makes you happy Port Melbourne now has the best developer in the game as head coach.

Werribee historically have been aligned with the Geelong Falcons as the Western Jets have been historically aligned to Williamstown.

They offer oppurtunities to a lot of Geelong based talent given besides Geelong VFL there are no other VFL programs closeby, and Werribee is closest.

Not only that, they've had a lot of success with being able to relocate players from other vic country zones especially closer to the border.

Werribee have placed a huge empathasis on development and retention in recent seasons, they hardly recruited any big names for 2023 and 2023 yet finished on top of the ladder.

Yes Port Melbourne will need to go down the development path which they havent in recent seasons. That has hurt them

20 odd years is hardly historical.

Great effort from Willy, jumped early down by 20. Got on top, stopped BL's run and got 24 up mid 3rd and 8 points at 3qt.

Ran out of legs in the last in the 30 degree heat and lost by 17.

Beaten in centre clearances all day but dug in and kicked straight.

Preliminary Finals Fixture
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 7
1st Preliminary Final

Werribee vs Brisbane at Avalon Airport Oval 11am
2nd Preliminary Final
Footscray vs Southport at Whitten Oval 2pm

Weribee v Lions
Footscray v Southport

Thats my tip, Would be a cracking match up in the final.
I'll go Werribee and Footscray. Dogs will have a few drop back from the AFL team now that they are out, but wouldn't overly surprise if Southport won.

All Western suburbs final, fantastic.

yeah fair call that. Might just change my tip over to Footerscraye

who do the Grass get back from the AFL side?

Footscray lose Sanders which is massive and Khamis.

Harmes, McNeil, Fraijah I believe come back. Guys like Daniel, Macrae, Lobb who helped them to wins earlier in the year won’t be there

15 AFL listed from what I can see will most likely play (Croft 50/50)

Potential for Brisbane to be undermanned
Only data we have on this was Wildcard weekend GC sent 26 to Melbourne while VFL were in Queensland

Last weekend
Cats vfl played 1 1/2 days after cats afl
Brisbane vfl played in Queensland while afl was also in Queensland
AFL Bye weekend no crossovers

Brisbane afl play in nsw, vfl in vic. Real chance Fagan takes 23 + all 3 emgs over to nsw

Didn’t expect them to beat Werribee anyway. But it would be such a shame to have 5 or so missing (Payne injury potentially needing cover)

We were supposed to have a 12 team state league in 1995 with eight metro clubs (Box Hill, Dandenong, Frankston, Port Melbourne, Preston, Sandringham, Springvale plus either Williamstown or Werribee) and four country clubs (North Ballarat, Traralgon plus teams from the Bendigo and O&M zones), each with seniors and reserves and have an alignment with a TAC Cup Under 18 team. The VFA was going to be renamed the VSFL (the name that was used by the reserves competition at that time). It was a logical step and would have brought Victoria into line with what was happening in the other states at state league level.

It never happened because the AFL clubs didn't want to give up their reserves competition and threatened to sack the AFL commission if they continued to carry out their plan.

The AFL have said in recent times that they aren't going to fund both an AFL reserves competition and also a VSFL/VFA/VFL any time soon.
