Onley shapes as another prototype of the modern big midfielder standing 194cm tall with the pace and agility to navigate midfield traffic and lovely quick hands in tight spaces. As a bottom ager he got a lot of run as a core onballer at the Champs which says a lot about the high regard that the Vic Country coaching staff have for him and his game. I would love to see Riley put a lot of work into his disposal by foot over the pre-season as his final kick inside 50 or shot on goal can too often spoil his excellent build up work.

Plays quite upright.

Reminds me a bit of Connor Nash on this brief viewing

His father was extremely gifted and IIRC played senior Vic Country .
Ironically he tended to play with a slouched posture .
Wouldn’t surprise if Riley grows another 2-3 inches ( 5-7cms) .

We won't have picks...

Things can change, but club has parked itself in an interesting place heading into next year.

Realistic to think we will finish last. So we have Pick one. Realistic to think North win max 8 games? So another top 5 pick.

Say we have Pick 1 & 5.

The top end at this stage is midfield beasts and KPP Ruck types.

Considering we took Faull, Armstrong and Sims, with what we have, it’s gonna be very interesting what we do.

Think we either take 2 big mids or split the 2nd pick.

I think they will try...I agree I don't think it will be successful. Where we got first rounders maybe they can get second and third rounders. They can't top up forever, they aren't like Geelong getting sucked off by the AFL every year.
Disagree.
Umpires are employed by the afl.

Despite drafting a range of tall's we didn’t recruit a pure ruckman and will still need a genuine Nankervis replacement. If Emmett or CDT prove to be out and out ruckmen rather than forwards they could fill a genuine need.

I’m a big believer in going best available with early picks but right now i think a ruckman and midfielder would be my preferred combo. Obviously in twelve months time we may have a totally different outlook though.
Don't care how good a young ruckman is.
Never use a top 10 on one.
We won 3 with Nank.
How many have the Dees won with Gawn?
Pies let Grundy go win the flag next year.
Swans grab Grundy.Get slaughtered.

I’ve got a good feeling about our current crop of small forwards.
I think Seth is going to be a gun
MRJ still lots of improvement,
Clarke just needs a decent run at it,
and Alger looks promising.
I’m hoping at least one of these guys develop into our next A grade small forward, it’s been a long time since we’ve had one. Probably going back to the 80s

As good as Sharp I'm not sure he's the ideal fit with Lalor and Smilie on what I've seen. Wish he was a bit faster. Greaves looks a little bit more athletic but still not the perfect fit. Will we pick a 3rd inside bull? Possible but I think in that case the other pick needs to be a running type.

Interesting for sure. Rodriguez looks a perfect compliment. Looks like a McKercher type. Need him to have a big year to solidify top 3-5 spot and we need to finish below west coast to get him

On exposed form you take Rodriguez

Still a year to go of course let’s see

I disagree on the first part. I think Sharp rounds off the midfield with his defensive edge to his game. Lalor is your powerful, striker mid. Smillie is that nice mover, 2nd receiver and Sharp is the brute tackler that can win the hard ball.

All 3 compliment eachother nicely.

They're all talented enough to make it work. I wouldn't say it's a perfect compliment though. Lalor outside game is a weakness at present (hopefully gains that extra gear on spread with fitness). Sharp's disposal on the outside is scrappy and not super fleet of foot (might improve).

Smillie would be the best receiving option with his disposal but if those are your 3 main ball winners you're looking a bit one paced on the spread. Ideally that 3rd main ball winner is a shifty, agile type. Maybe that's Rodriguez with the other pick, maybe that's Hotton.

If Sharp dominates we pick him though. No questioning that.

Why would we split the 2nd pick ?

We will most likely just take 3 maybe 4 selections in the draft and just take the 2 best rated mids
Sharp looks a monty for pick #1 beast inside mid and a player like Rodriguez is exactly the mid we need with his excellent kicking and dual sided. Then we have the Kellaway boy
Just add a project small foward with speed and call it a night
