Yeah I was sort of leaning toward Aish (hadn't considered Wagner) just due to him being able to play all over the field. I went with Draper in the end because I think he is better than either Aish or Wagner. But he probably wouldn't be a required player on the day.

I'll keep an eye on Wags this year, but maybe we need to be shopping around for a quality utility.

Murphy Reid off HB please to replace Sonny.

HB: Clark Cox Chapman
C: O'Driscoll Young Sharp
HF:Bolton Treacy Switta
FF:Sturt Amiss Jackson
R:Darcy Serong Brayshaw
I: Frederick, Johnson, .., ..

Those 20 are set for me.

Last 3:

Midfield:
Fyfe/Erasmus/Brodie/O'Maera

Backs:
Wagner/Aish/Draper

Forwards:
Walters/Simpson

Would put a back and another mid on the bench. Picked on form. Has some old vs young wipes (Fyfe/Ras) and some favourites vs unfavourites (Brodie/O'Maera).

That probably leaves one of Walters or Simpson as sub. Or another mid or Aish as an utility.

Somehow like older ones like Fyfe/Walters or Aish for flexibilty as sub. And all have the experience to have some impact and the tank to run out a game when needed early. Prefer to give younger players a try first and sub then them out when they have no impact.

Emercency:
Voss/Reidy/Davies/McDonald obvious choices when backup in their position is needed. Then whoever is next in line on form.

Not sure on other new players. Narkle looks like a recruit to play games but can't see a spot for him unless injuries.

Love to fit Draper in, not sure how.

I like everything you’ve written until I got to Hughes as an emergency!

Actually I meant Hugh Davies...

Got too used to Hughes being in the mix probably.

Hughes will find it hard to be in mix this year given he’s no longer on our list.

Had a decent career IMO. He was a better footballer than people gave him credit for but if you’re not in the top 26-27 players on a list, not tall and aren’t young in AFL terms you’re getting delisted and that’s just how it is. He was going to be 30 before next season starts - had a good run.

Do we think Sturt is a guaranteed starter next year or do we think that he may get pushed out at the start of the season? He was one of our highest goalkickers playing only half of the season, he'd be a bit stiff to miss out in my opinion.

I think it depends on Sturt's fitness and the forward line structure.
I'd say his spot is still vulnerable.

Sturt still has upside and I hope we get to see it in 2025 I'd have him in my preferred side but not locked in.

I can't lock him into the best 22 simply because we have quality options, but I do like the points of difference that he brings: speed, height and accuracy in a medium tall is a great addition to our attack.

What he seems to lack is aggression, defence and a second position. That's where his upside is maybe.

It does depend on structure, IMO we need at least 1 medium though. 3 talls and 4 smalls doesn’t work, especially if we want Jackson spending more time as second ruck (to ease the burden on Darcy’s knees) or as an oversized midfielder to provide better aerial coverage between the arcs.
The hawks showed more smalls can be effective, but I don’t see how leaving a 2 goal a game player out can benefit the team, especially now he’s putting in the defensive pressure required.

I am still very bullish on him.

Last year, his forward pressure was good and he averaged 2 goals a game.

I have Frederick, O'Meara and Banfield all out of the side, before Sturt, but obviously he needs to be fit which is probably the bigger issue with Sturt. Hopefully his knee is good.

Agree minus Freddy. Criminal how underrated he is to our structure on here.

Does hit the score board enough or provide enough forward pressure to be guaranteed a spot in the forward line.

What does he bring to the forward line? In my opinion he needs to ramp us his forward pressure to hold his spot.

Jackson Treacy Bolton
Switta Amiss Sturt

Frederick, O'Meara, Banfield and co all fighting for the last spot (7th) in the forward line.

FYI - I am massive on us getting a pure small forward who provides forward pressure and hits the scoreboard. If you get Pickett, then it becomes very easy.

Freddy is a connector. He brings the speed/endurance combo of getting up and down the ground. He's not supposed to be camped in the 50 tackling blokes and getting front and centre.

for a connector the bloke is full of fumbles. hes really at in between stage atm, cant really be trusted to make things happen up the ground as his fumbles can really cost us mid transition as we all push forward fast, and hes becoming increasingly inconsistent in front of goal as well.

needs to step up this season imo

If he didn't fumble, he'd cost twice as much in salary. Try and name 5 players with his physical attributes but who are also really clean.

He's fine.

In that case, move him to the midfield rotation and out of the forward line.

Don't think we can carry two forwards, who don't score although we don't have a lot of better options.

If we brought in someone like Pickett, then Frederick would be pushed out of the forward line and then he would need to fight for a midfield spot or wait for an injury.

On a side note, It will be interesting to see how Bolton changes the forward structure and where he is played. Hopefully there is a bit more rotation through the middle, and players like Frederick, Bolton, Switta all get small stints in the midfield. (Bolton more than the other 2)

Its a forward role. Every team has them. Hawks and Giants play like 3 of them. He does well compared to most others in his role around the league.

Pickett is not taking Freddy's role. Totally different players. Sturt or Switta would be most in danger unless you can move on of them into Freddy's role, which I doubt.

I like Sturt but he wasn't at 2 goals per game last season (it was ~1.6 goals/game), and has been well under that in the past so I think some are being generous about his actual achievements.

Like theGav56 said, his point of difference is his medium height combined with speed and accuracy, which is valuable in our team.
However he still may not be in our best mix if we had everyone fit and firing because of the strengths of Amiss, Treacy and Jackson in my view.

If he keeps improving his defensive pressure or Amiss was out then it would be pretty hard to leave him out if he's fit.

His passing is great too, and he’s very smart at finding space inside 50.

Exactly.Be nice if he kicked more goals, but that applies to all our forwards.
Just his presence and speed makes his opponent very nervous.
And Sturt is a walk up start. He was a very valuable player last season and began to believe in himself and that he could play at the top level. His pressure became top notch .
