Injuries have held Kemp back a bit. Not just to him but from the list. He started his career late, recruited injured and took some time to get going. Then he comes into the team and spends most of it filling holes. Filling holes because we have missing key position players and playing the third tall defender role a lot.

To me he is an offensive player who has been locked into defensive roles. Half back flank playing up the ground he has been good.

He has thins really good athletic profile we haven't really used all that often, he also reads the play well behind the ball so I am hoping with more license to hunt the ball we see the best of him.

Could be our LIZARD.......Shown rare glimpses of this type of dash but has had to play with much more accountability
in our back six.

Watch Swans and Blakey is always on his own, lurking, waiting to be given the ball and then taking off.
And Sydney uses him more often than not.

Be good if we could engineer this type of play with Kemp IMO. Let him off the leash and use his explosive pace.

Couple this with his strong marking/intercepting and reading of it coming in and we would have a real weapon.

Which one on the bench is playing as the 7th defender?

I suspect one of the mids in the bench is out (Lord for mine) and Boyd in

I hope Haynes has another year in him, the nostalgia says Silvagni.

My only other concern is E Hollands, I like what he could bring (quality disposals into the forward line if he is playing high half forward) but I want him to take another step up

No Durdin and Motlop I can see, they need to get it together but in the mean time Williams could be the small forwards with Fogarty

I think Kemp is always going to be a stop gap serviceable player who gets to 200 games because of his versatility but he wony be more than a solid B grader who has some great performances sprinkled in
Out of contract at end of the season. Suspect won’t be offered a substantial deal.

I suspect you may be right, given the flirtation with trade during the period just gone. I very much hope that is not the case. The young man has “flaws” but has been shunted around based on TEAM needs during the period which should have been used to develop him.

We have finally drafted a long term KPD prospect, but he is going to take time to develop. For some reason Young cannot seem to cohabit with Weitering. Haynes has been a great player across his journey, but is not a genuine KPD. I am not sure how a Weitering, Haynes, McGovern dynamic works? McGovern does precious little defensive work, he is given licence to play more offensively, while Kemp is judged on his “inability” to play on the big guys and “defend”, while often being forced to “switch” on to another players’ responsibility. He is very harshly judged (there are very few Jack Buckley, Nathan Murphy types in the competition) Jordan Ridley at * is one of the game’s premier rebound/intercept players when allowed to play his natural role. When asked to play as an under sized KPD, he is very ordinary.

Not sure Kempy has the scope to emulate “Lizard”, but I can absolutely see a play making rebounder. I genuinely see scope to emulate McGovern’s rebound, yet be slightly more accountable. Kemp has the inclination to defend, but I can concede not the superior game sense of some defensive guns. Trying to add more bulk to compete with the gorillas would move much of his appeal.

Kemp could work forward, but I see him more as a shock trooper than a staple. I firmly believe Moir is going to be a weapon. I still look back to his under age year at the championships and thinking in superlatives on the player he was likely to become. The glimpses he gave us in his two cameos were phenomenal. He was levels above his VFL showings. Made for the big time. I don’t see Charlie, Harry, Kempy and Ashton co-existing long term in our forward line. We need room for pressure players, crumbers and rotational room for our fleet of midfielders.

Many are jumping on the JSOS 2nd KPD train, I am not negative on this but, while he is not as slow as some may think, he doesn’t complement Weiters well. The pace of Kemp is a big positive in that regard.

Yep, not often early draft picks get locked into negative defensive roles like this but with us this has happened. We haven't really ever used him in an offensive role.

The trick is from our coaching group, is to make his role an aggressive and offensive one, which is clearly his natural game.

We tried him forward. He lead up well, he marked well, he kicked goals and this was as a key forward not a third tall which he will be more suited to. He also won ground ball and used his pace to chase and tackle. In a weaker Carlton side.

I think Kemp and Moir forward with McKay and Curnow is really going to make us threatening, open the forward line up and improve our ball movement quite a lot. Brisbane just won a flag with a very strong overhead forward line so I am hoping we can do the same.

Blakey is given the ball as he is a superb user by foot. I don't think kemp has the foot skill or footy brain to play a Blakey-type role. Kemps best position is probably third forward but not confident he will make it there either, but fingers crossed.

Kemp has height, is naturall an attacking player and good overhead. He also has pace and a really good tank. He's going to be ideal forward.

Why?
Because when we start to moving the ball forward quickly he has the tank and speed to get forward of the ball from a deep defensive position.

He already knows how to lead up at the ball and plays CHF really well.

He will allow McKay to spend more time in the ruck and rest TDK more. Tick, tick. Two very important things we need to happen going forward.

Gives us height without losing speed and too much at ground level.

More marking targets makes us less predictable. Can't crowd Curnow and McKay, we will just go to Moir or Kemp.

Moir does the same for us. His tank may not be as good but he has a strong aerial game and will make up for lack of tank with exceptional forward IQ. Moir will be that player who is "just in the right spot" regularly.

Our forward line should go forward if we select the right team. Kemp is a part of that.

My hope if some young players can step up over pre season

B: Boyd Silvagni McGovern
HB: Ollie Weitering Saad
C: Acres Cripps Docherty
HF: Moir McKay Williams
F: Kemp Charlie Motlop
Foll: TDK Cerra Walsh
Int: Newman Smith Lord Durdin Elijah

That’s an extremely skillful and mobile side with lots of flexibility

This is a really strong team on paper. Definitely beats most teams. It does highlight our deficiencies though.
  • The 2nd key defender spot is still an issue against teams that go in tall up forward or those that rest a ruck there. Still think Haynes gets first crack over Silvagni purely on proven success as a defender. We didn’t bring him in just to be depth IMO.
  • With so many guys in defence that don’t have a naturally defensive mindset, it means Saad has to play more lockdown and that stifles his run and carry.
  • We really need a guy like Wilson to force his way into the team to give us more drive out of our D50 but that’s a work in progress.
  • Without a genuine 2nd small forward on the field we look a little too unbalanced up forward. Williams is a strange one. Really good player but doesn’t play like a half forward or a natural small forward.
  • I like little Durds or Fogarty in there for a bit more chase and tackle but can see the reasoning behind both Kemp and Moir.

A lot of our improvement will come from the younger guys stepping up - Cowan, Binns, Wilson, Moir and hopefully a cleaner bill of health. The team you’ve listed is talented enough on paper to overcome most list issues if we get the game plan right IMO.

Gotta replace someone with young Cow.

Docherty?

I'd have Cowan in that side ahead of Boyd, and Fog ahead of Kemp.

Soapy is one of the few recent posters I have seen who has chosen Weitering at CHB rather than FB.

For those picking Weitering at full back, is it just because you are finding it hard to identify a second key position defender, and can imagine Gov or Haynes fitting better at CHB rather than deeper in defence?

Still think Young has it in him to be genuine best 23 if he wants it enough. I'd imagine Weiters and him would know for the sake of the team they need to find a way to make things work.

He's by far the best fit athletically for a pairing with Weiters. Certainly more so than JSOS or Kempy. Looking forward to seeing how that unfolds over the pre season, though I'm not holding out a heap of hope. We all know how hot and cold he can be unfortunately.

Small sample size but Young looked quite good in those last two games with Weitering. Holding out hope that there is something there still - as long as he keeps it very simple with his disposal and makes faster decisions with ball in hand (i.e., handball it to a runner) I think he can be a serviceable partner for Weitering. Obviously Haynes coming in will make it an interesting MC decision
