I don't see Neale playing anywhere other than an inside mid. He doesn't rely on pace so even when his pace does drop off a bit, it is unlikely to be an issue. I'm probably wrong but I just can't envision it.

I think he does rely on his acceleration as he spoke about on the roar deal and has been reflected by his performances against taggers who can shut that down.
No shame in him spending a couple more years as an inside mid then retiring

An interesting read this one. Freo's reaction to getting Neale at 58. Some interesting writeups about him from the media etc. It helps shows just how hard Lachie worked on his craft when comparing him to how we view his skills etc now.
ETA: Kind of crazy he went at 58 reading some of his accomplishments at u/18 level.
I agree with this.
Zorko’s pace and low trajectory long kick gave him the tools to do it. Not sure there’s been a heap of mids Neale’s size or skill set that have been able to transition to half back with great impact at the end of their career.
Of course not, he isn't a Queenslander. I don't understand what point is being made.

In relation to picking players up from other clubs we haven’t exactly been limited to lions supporters, it’s more than possible to still get big name players
Lachie's a very competitive champ so wherever you played him he'd be a threat to the opposition.
Should be interesting to see how we manage him this year if the load can get shared around a little more.
I don't see him slowing down any time soon , he just seems too driven.

Allen ain’t leaving West Coast unless they don’t want him. The fact that now Hawks have been labelled as another club that has spoken to him stinks to high heavens as more strategic leaking from his camp.
Luke Hodge went ok
A bit taller though and a better reader of the game than Neale. If I remember correctly started his career down there too so had some craft.
Mitchell I had forgotten about, I guess he’s a worthy comparison. Still I see Neale staying inside mid until the end but stranger things have happened.

I don’t remember Mitchell much specifically but wasn’t he a very two footed player with great kicking skills? Not in range but in accuracy and precision. Inspired a lot of the kick heavy footy Hawthorn played which Fagan then brought over here.
Neale is not that type of player. I would bet he’d stay in the midfield until he’s done but if he did move it would be forward. He’s had good scoreboard impact as a full time mid but more importantly he thrives in congestion and that’s much more common forward than out back. He wouldn’t accumulate like he does now but his best skill would still be in use in a dangerous position.

I think neale has the base skills and the attitude to refine the skills to play half back. If he wants to.

I wouldn't bet against him doing a good job regardless of where we put him. I listened to his roar deal interview today and on top of reading the stuff about his draft year, it is even clearer how hard he is willing to work to 'upskill' himself to fill a role.
I just don't see him slowing down to the stage where he is no longer in the mid rotation but still being good enough to play elsewhere.

It’d be negligent of wce to just straight up offer Allen 6 years when your list is where it’s at and you have the benefit of being able to wait and see how the year unfolds.
The other factor is, if it becomes clear Reid wants to go back to Vic then they’re better off trading him at the end of this year to maximise value while contracted. At that point you commit to a full rebuild and take the top pick for Allen. Try to get 4 picks inside the top 10.

Allen is only 26 so him being around for their next tilt at a premiership isn't outside of the realms of possibility. You don't want to lose too many of your good to elite players during a rebuild, just because they have good trade capital. NM culled basically all of their experience and it set them back years compared to what a more standard rebuild would have done. Most of their other elite talent is on the wrong side of 30.

I reckon if they lose Reid and with TAS coming in, best case would be 4-5 years to be properly established in the 8. Years 5-7 probably contending. He’s too old for that build imo.
