Do we need the list spot for the draft?

Steve Bannon Bingo GIF

Liam McBean! Id say it was a name I never thought I'd hear again, but honestly, he didn't even warrant enough consideration to think about not thinking about.

I'm not fussed. I trust the club. They thought Jack Gunston was the solution, maybe they were just 2 years early.

Gettable today: Who could Brisbane target as a Joe replacement?

Beveridge: If you look at how they've drafted over the last few years, they're going to back in that depth - Logan Morris, Luke Lloyd, Brandon Ryan. Would they be a club that monitors the Mitch Lewis situation at Hawthorn in 2025? Shannon Neale from Geelong who is OOC and could be prized out? Obviously their salary cap will play a huge part in it. There aren't many key forward free agents next year, how crazy can they go to get a contracted key forward?

Twomey: The interesting thing about Brisbane is they've got academy boys this year and next year, so it does limit your ability to target contracted players.

This is now absolutely a record I am invested in. McCluggage should be able to pump out another 100+ games but most of the other Mc's are getting on a bit. We need to start recruiting a young Mc ASAP. McCluggage needs McBackup

Will McAshcroft and Levi McAshcroft should help.

Club rates this guy pretty high. It's a tough forward group to get in to but he's a chance. We might be ok. Screenshot_20241106_213219_Chrome.jpg

I had totally forgotten about him. Perfect need to get him playing regular games in the next 1-2 years.

In a serious discussion what role would he be looking for in the forward line? I havent seen enough of the VFL to get a gauge on him. We seem to be well stacked for half forwards at the moment (Linc, Lohman, Rayner, Bailey, Levi, etc) but not sure how many of them would look to be a pure small forward like Charlie. Is McLachlan that guy?

No real like for like in our current group. I would say most like Lohmann. Low position high impact. Quick, or maybe quick reaction time. I can’t seeing him replacing any of the players listed ( baring injuries). Bit of an undersized third tall. On going debate about actual height. To me he looks to have a bit of a Darryl White look about his build ie long arms allow him to play abit taller.

Others may have a different take.

Have we ever recruited a small forward who wasn't also considered a marking forward? Seems to be a pretty clear trend.

You would nearly say that we really don’t have small forwards.
More medium forwards who can play small or tall.
Won us the Premiership imo, it was our point of difference.

100%.

Lohman and Ah Chee gave us something extra that we've never had before in the forward line. Guys who can present as marking targets , still excellent at ground level and fantastic defensively. And kick goals. Probably throw Morris in there as well.

That's what to a significant extent got us through those last 3 games with wins as a point of difference to our earlier campaigns. And it sparked up Charlie to be more accountable defensively.

I mostly agree but still think it's good to have at least one specialist small forward or 2 in the team. Charlie will need to retire at some point and its easier to have a specialist fill the role rather than a half mid.

Teams have been spending more and more draft/trade capital on good small forwards recently

He’s not small at 187cm, but it has crossed my mind several times this week that with Joe retiring, could Rayner possibly play deeper forward, at times a full forward role, and rotate through the midfield in a role similar to Dusty during the Tigers dominating years, and De Goey from a few years ago.

Then fill the spare forward spot with Linc.

(I’d prefer this to the Day option. Ruck relief….with a strong defence, could Payne not at least be tried as a relief ruck…needed maybe 10-15%of total game time..he’s as strong as an Ox).

I wonder if they might trial Linc as a 'tall forward' at some point.
I like your thinking Sproj.

Thinking outside the box.

Some will think think that a bit unconventional, but I actually think it could work.

Just because it may not be mainstream thinking, doesn’t mean it should not be trialled. Just like my thinking about Payne rucking, against the grain of thinking that 2nd ruck should be a forward. Why? Why does a 2nd ruck need to be a forward and not a back?

Thanks for your input Sproj.

We do have IMHO a unique forward structure with a number of our forwards x6!!! strong overhead…Hippy, Rayner, Morris, Linc, Ah Chee, Lohmann.

You wouldn't count anything out at this stage. But given he's literally the shortest player on our list at the moment, the irony is not lost on me.

Anyway good discussion... May also explain why we flirted ever so briefly with the Malcolm Rosas idea and then decided against it.

I’ve sort of being thinking about it as a to get Linc back in there. Such a good player but unless there are injuries, if he doesn’t go this route, I don’t see how he gets back in.

He was our representative in the grand final sprint, not that maybe an indication of speed with our team and substitutes playing on the day but he did make the final and he didn't look that 'small' to me.

I’m a hard no on defenders in the ruck…you need to leave your back 6 as a settled ubit…there’s a reason there are so many more ruck/forwards than ruck/defenders
