Is Tom DeKoning out of the Question? Too expensive? Does his best work as a ruck?
Would be too pricey and screw up our cap even if possible. Our ideal fit would be - shown good potential at some point but injured now, clean profile, fits a need, won't extremely break the bank and can be obtained just via $$$ without using any pick/player trades.

At 1.7 yes.

The Ashcrofts are going to have to get paid at some stage. And we need a genuine KPF.

I also wonder what the list strategy is with a $1.7m ruck. I assume it means you spend less on your second string mid maybe? Idk.

Any contract that seeks to get Allen to move is going to be big enough to trigger first round compensation. That part might as well be a given, the discussion is really just about whether he's worth that $800k+ (probably more) contract.

He was, undoubtably. But is he anymore? If he's dropped his head because his mind is elsewhere well that's a bad sign of his resilience. We should definitely explore the option but have a clear point at which we exit the auction.

To be fair it is a very human thing to happen, especially if you're genuinely torn. Not easy at all.

That said, I am cooling on him. We need a KPF who can forward/ruck - Allen's physically not suitable for that role and it feels as if Morris will play the role Allen will best suit.

True but I think it speaks to his self-efficacy and in sports like NRL, where players move on a lot more than AFL, it doesn't seem to affect their effort or pride.

It's a perfect storm of:

  • Genuinely torn
  • Back from long term injury
  • Terrible ball movement

Maybe but unless he shows more resilience then well maybe AFL isn't for him. WC culture seems off right now, but he is also a club leader. Doesn't seem to be leading much, our captains during the bleak years at least stood up week after week. I worry about his mental fortitude, for a guy who offers a very small upgrade or no upgrade, on our current set up at this current time, do we really need to commit salary cap space to him? I'm willing to wait and see, but as for getting into a bidding war with other sides for his services, right now, I say no.

I swear you've copy and pasted this from a discussion about Joe Daniher in 2020 and changed a couple of words.

Anyone with any sense loved the fact that we were getting Daniher GH.

It was only the Melbourne centric Essendon diehards in the media who resented the fact that Joe couldn't get on the park at Essendon and were secretly spewing that someone else was going to get hold of him.

Allen is no Joe Daniher. Nowhere near.

We're not getting another Joe, our choices are probably Allen or hoping Gallop develops into a quality player in a few years.

True but he strikes me as just another Josh Schache, just doesn't have the drive to really be elite.

When clubs go all money ball on their lists, as they will now, he's going to fall into the too big a risk for the investment category.

I think Essendon are just stuck with him, without giving him away, and he will be gone from AFL in a few years.

List management is going to get brutal in the near future and consistency over exception will pay the big $$$.

Yeah and Daniher can have some the worst body language, ranges from ebullient to indifferent. No on Cameron too, in fact a no to anyone who will need a lot of cash thrown at them to get them here, too destabilising imo and I really don't think we are that far off to look for a hail Mary. Brown if Norf don't ask the world or Casboult, either would suit me fine.

Brilliant post, well researched and posited. I think you are right that Brown is the best option regardless of his poor year, given his personal issues and the fact that Norf had given up playing. The only consideration is what Norf will ask for him.

Casboult is my second, and a close second at that. To have two tall, brutal mark clunkers in McStay (HB) and Casboult (HF) covering the arcs could be a game breaker.

I'm a bit risk averse on Daniher, not just injuries or commitment wise but what he brings to our very strong culture. It took years of hard work by the club to turn things around and I'm not impressed with how he has treated Essendon and what effect that has had on the team. Theres's few Essendon supporters who have a kind word for him.

Yes like I said that was us not so long ago so you understand my reticence, not pointing the finger at the man or the club but somethings been wrong and been so for a while now. Daniher is a polarizing figure, you have to expect that surely.

Saucery remember that time you said that Daniher was “another josh Schache”

Lewis is contracted for next year, and I don’t see how we’d getting him without giving up our first this year. Which makes draft rorts tough.
I'm expecting it to be Allen but if Mitch talks him into Hawthorn then they'd be looking to offload Lewis for something they could live with is my thinking.

Agreed, they are my posts and at the time I wanted Casboult, but I said he 'strikes me as another Josh Schache', not 'was', selective quoting is very uncool. My booboo I guess but does that mean I have no right to comment again? I guess I already know the answer, right? Play the man not the idea. GG GH17 and you.

It's possible but hard to see why they would be happy to strengthen us, and they could hold him for a year (particularly if they don't win this year and want to have a full crack).
